Shorter shows, no travelling, lots of perks, steady money. Vegas residency is a pretty sweet gig IMHO. And you could do a lot worse than Steely Dan.

Well, they HAVE reeled away a lot of years.

I thought this was more of a run of about 7 concerts.  that's more of an extended vacation, not residence.

Years ago I overheard two guys talking in a bookstore. One guy said a couple things that have stuck with me for decades. 1. Steely Dan is nobody's favorite band. 2. The guy was majoring in Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Bad judgement. That's the theme.

An ex-girlfriend got me into "Steely Dan" a few years back. I had never really listened to anything, except the stuff that gets played on the radio.

Steely Dan scratches an itch that no other band does, and technically, they are miraculous. The production on their albums is insanely good - I don't think there are any bands that come close. Maybe Pink Floyd, back in the day?

Anyway, I don't listen to them all the time, but when you are in the mood, nothing beats Steely Dan. Their stuff is so *rich*.

Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last summer.

Worth it.

I don't care what anyone says, I love these two guys. Their albums are diverse and filled with great musicians. I would go to Vegas just to see them.

Back in 1972, they were cutting edge music. Sorry that they got old. It happens to the best.

Damn straight. I'm a bit obsessed with my speakers and headphones and, among other artists, I use the Dan to test new equipment. Specifically, Aja and Gaucho. "Home at Last" from the former and "Glamour Profession" from the latter, specifically. But really, any later Dan cut will do as the production and overall musicianship is so tight. You're right to mention Pink Floyd as a production comparison. Both have impossibly clean, precise quality that makes listening to the details just as much fun as appreciating the actual songwriting.

My favorite aspect of the Dan is the marriage of fairly innocuous sounding tunes riddled with sarcastic, wink-nod lyrics that are most definitely adult themed. Case in point: I was in the grocery store of all places and "Hey Nineteen" was softly playing. The blue-haired old ladies inspecting produce wouldn't have believed the lyrics if I told them. And really, is there a Steely Dan song that doesn't at least casually mention a drug dealer? An extramarital affair? Assorted lowlifes? A prostitute in New Orleans? Porn, even?

Best 'band' ever. I think they'd have even more fans if more people got past the common impression of them being a milquetoast fusion band they heard on the radio growing up. Because there is some hilarious, dark, and otherwise compelling songcraft there.

Met a guy at a local bar last week who does lighting for them. He informed me they are in town for just a couple weeks at a smaller venue. (I think it's Venetian and sits about 3k.). Did get to see them at Mandaly Bay some years ago. Front row! Great show.

Ill be at the Venetian on Friday to see that show.. 5th row up.. center seats.. 250$... good work if you can find it..

A lot of the blue hairs I hang with were some of Steely Dan's earliest fans.  Remember, when mentioning retirees, a 65 year old today was 16 in 1968.  Not to mention, at the ticket prices, the blue hairs are the ones supporting classic artists, across every genre.  Make fun of them all you want, just acknowledge your debt to their support of the arts.

For whatever reason, I've always perceived their music as "wintertime" music. I've never thought of their sound as a summer sound. They're the only band I've ever thought that about.

I love Steely Dan (saw them play Madison Square Garden about 25 years ago), and I agree that they are one of the best studio bands ever. But I can make another recommendation:
