The Gallifreyan cruisers and the dukes of Arrakis
They all leave us alone 'cause they know what the fact is
Got four fusion chambers and a tachyon hull
And a cherry pair of flood sealers keeping it cool

On the Kessel Run, yeah, nobody can touch her
Let me be the Picard to your Beverly Crusher
The gangway's extended and we're ready to go
Won't you come along baby on my UFO

Surely no danger getting in a stranger's UFO!

She looks like a kitty cat but rides like an ace
Serenity and Slave I can't keep the pace
Whitley Strieber and Roy Neary gonna join in the race
Yeah my UFO's the coolest GTO in space

From Altair IV to New San Francisco
We'll be catching gamma rays in my flying disco
Bring your pointy gun thingie and Tom and Crow
Yeah, would you come along baby in my UFO

Klaatu barada na-no na-no, make it so
And climb into the side of a complete stranger's UFO

I don't like Jonah's voice in general.  He's got this hipster mushmouth thing going that annoys me.  Especially in actors/public speakers.  There's a bunch of comedians I dislike because of that.

I'm having more of an issue with Tom Servo. Dude doing his voice is trying to do that slightly prissy thing that classic Servo had and it just isn't really delivered all that well. That and it's bugging me not knowing how the bots got back on the SOL after they crashed on Earth with Mike all those years ago.

I was in tears multiple times when watching that one.

2017-04-16 11:37:32 PM
I have watched 9, maybe 10 episodes thus far. Brilliant stuff. Several celebrity cameos, great quips and they thought of some great improvements such as getting Gypsy up off of the floor and giving her the freedom to pop into the viewing room to add the "feminine" touch to the riffing.

They're baaaaaaack, Baby! I am already hoping for more seasons and more great bad movies. One thing I liked about RiffTrax is that it showed that their riffing works just as well on good movies (to a given value of "good") as it does on old B movies, but B movies are my favs because riffing really adds value.

The first episode was rough.. Was like meeting an old friend who kinda grew up a little bit. Getting used to the new voices, dealing with them finding chemistry... But at the middle they really found their stride with delivery and the riffs... Episode 2 and on is just pure joy and classic Mst3k..

They really hit this reboot out of the park..

I have problems telling any of their voices apart but I think the riffs were good.  I'll give it a rewatch and see if I can get a fix on who is who.

I don't think they did get back.  I think they're duplicates, which allows for a little handwaving about the voices, too.  Servo is taking more getting used to.  Crow at least sounds similar to the original crow, when he was voiced by Trace Beaulieu, but Bill Corbett was Tom Servo for 9 seasons.  I actually had to go find a season 1 episode to remember what original Servo sounded like.

As for the quality of the riffs, I'm only on the second movie, so I can't pass too much judgment.  The first ~20 minutes of Reptilicus had me laughing so hard I was crying, but then they got really rapid-fire, not waiting for any of the jokes to land before launching into something else.  Maybe because the movie itself was so god-awful they didn't want to let it talk more than necessary.  Still good, just a little too packed in.  Cry Wilderness so far is better.

I'm very entertained so far. Some of the new gags are great... "movie in the hole!" We're watching Avalanche now.

Has anyone figured out how it is connected to the other featured movies? The first and third were connected through Ib Melchior, and the third and fourth are connected by Al Franken's cousin ("shut up, Danny from the last movie!"). But we can't figure out what the hell Cry Wilderness has to do with any of them.

I don't appreciate the rapid fire shouting of every joke though. Rookie mistake.

Much closer to Joel's era than Mike's.

2017-04-17 12:40:08 AM
Haven't watched them yet, but Crow does sound like a cross between Trace and Bill Corbett, so I'm good with him.

Servo, though... well, I'll either get used to him or send a huge dot matrix printer sign to them about how I hate Tom Servo's new voice.

It really starts to get going by the third episode "Time Travelers."  Much better pacing and sketches. That's when it really starts to feel like it's MST. On the fourth now. So if the first couple seen out of whack just give it time. You'll be glad you did.

I just finished this episode (Avalanche). Probably my favorite so far. The avalanche sequence might be the best rapid fire riffing I've seen.

Although...

saintwrathchild: I don't appreciate the rapid fire shouting of every joke though.

I have noticed this. I think it's because Joel and Mike had such a slow, deliberate style of delivering lines. I'm getting used to it with Jonah, but it's taken some adjustment.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: My only thing is an inability to tell the voices of Tom Servo and Jonah apart.

For me, there are times when I can't tell Crow and Servo apart.

Pacing does get better. And they start to dump jokes that may not be funny or are too much. And they even start doing jokes over the dialogue, which seemed to create awkward pauses in the first episode or two, especially in between the barrage of jokes.

Got through the whole season over the weekend, but not while actively in front of the screen.  Mostly playing in the background as I did other things.  Still, loving the new season. There are things I'd definitely like to change, but overall it's classic MST updated for today's nerds.  MMO and video game references, plus modern pop culture.  I'm guessing in 10 years people will be like "What's this 'Hamilton' they're talking about?"  And the new theater doors are kinda cool.

My favorite, though, is them referring to other MST episodes.  Like sneaking in "This is where the fish lives" in 'The Beast of Hollow Mountain.'

I agree on Servo. Many friends and I find him pretty weak so far. Then again I'm only four episodes in so I guess I'll see if he improves. Still tough since Kevin did him for nine years. I think it's easier with Crow because Trace and Bill both did a bunch of episodes.

Also, props to Har Mar Superstar for belting out the lyrics to the new theme song.

Yeah, I goofed up.  Kevin Murphy was Servo, not Bill.  But yes, Servo had the same voice for yonks and the new one is weird.

I'm a die-hard fan of the original run, but I'm lukewarm on The Return after 12 episodes. But I'm giving it a chance because I can't be sure how much of my feelings are clouded by nostalgia for the original.

I don't really care for any of the characters. They all feel kind of bland and generic compared to their original counterparts. I think this is especially true of the new Mads, Kinga and Max, and also Gypsy. I also don't really like the actors (with the exception of Patton Oswalt), who just feel like actors playing a role as opposed to the more genuine/quirky performances from the original cast members. This might be because the new cast are actually actors hired for a role, as opposed to the original cast members who generally were with the show from the ground up in some capacity because they loved the concept before it ever became a cultural phenomenon.

Also, I think they should have cast the crew of the SOL with some more distinctive voices (literally). As others have pointed out, I often can't tell Jonah and Servo apart when they're in the theater, and Crow sounds like someone doing a lousy impression of Trace Beaulieu's Crow. And I really dislike that Gypsy just has a generic female voice (although it fits her new character).

I also think that the pacing of the riffs is too fast. Oftentimes the SOL crew even have to talk very quickly just so someone else can have enough time to do their unrelated riff. Although this seems to be more true with the earlier episodes than the later ones.

Finally, I think the whole thing has become too much of a production which detracts from it's charm. If you watch the end credits from any of the original episodes, the whole thing looks like it's done by about a dozen people, with many of them filling multiple roles- the people who voiced the bots were also their puppeteers and on the writing staff, the crew and writers would appear as actors when they needed someone else, the same people would do the show's audio and also work on the editing, and so on. It was a group effort and a labor of love and it showed. The Return, on the other hand, is a typical Hollywood production (literally, since the original run was made in the cast/crew's native Minnesota whereas The Return is made in L.A.). The end credits reflect this, with easily five times as many people involved in the production. There's a house band of sorts that performs the intro and the commercial bumpers (which are odd in themselves since there are no commercials) who are also the Mads' support staff (the Skeleton Crew), and so on.

Overall though, I'm still happy to have MST3k back in some form rather than nothing. And I still haven't ruled out the possibility that the majority of my issues with The Return are based on my nostalgia for the original run. Also, it's worth keeping in mind that the first season of the original run wasn't great either. It took them a while to hit their stride, so maybe the same will be true of The Return. Although who knows if it will last, since when Netflix reboots popular old shows it seems like they do a season so everyone can get their nostalgia fix and then drop it.

I love Rifftrax, but the host segments are an essential part of the MST3k experience.  It's just not the same.  Plus Rifftrax does a lot of movies that I'd voluntarily watch unriffed.  I can't really think of a single MSTed movie I'd say the same about.

Oh I know, I'm a huge fan. I slightly misspoke when I said I'd rather have The Return than no MST3k. I meant that I'm still glad this exists rather than simply not having it at all.
