Darryl Dahmer has been flying Toronto traffic for most of my life. I wonder if they'll replace him when he's done?

I submitted this last week with nearly identical headline for the not at all same city of St Louis. They're going to go with the traffic sensors now. That was the helicopter being killed off. There might still be a Cessna droning around though.

Maybe the former traffic reporters should get a modern, useful job, like mining for coal.

Welp.

And with the helicopter, there goes the pilot's job, the mechanic's job, the job of the fuel delivery guy, the radio maintainer's job, and a whole slew of other jobs.

But hey! We can feel good about supporting China's economy, what with the sensors and drones almost guaranteed to have been made there and imported.

MAGA!

Idiots nowadays can barely drive cars on the farking ground. Be glad we don't have flying cars.

Yup, I was one from 2002-2008, flying over Denver in a Cessna 182 twice a day.  When I was airborne there were three helicopters and two fixed wing planes up at any given time; now there's just one helicopter which each station brands as their own.

A couple of traffic helicopters collided mid-air about ten years back and killed the pilots and cameramen on both, fortunately no one on the ground was hurt as the 'copters happened to be over a park that had been evacuated due to the police situation they were covering at the time. There were five total helicopters in the sky at the time covering the event, one for each local news station. Needless to say, the density of craft in the airspace was far too high and undoubtedly contributed to the crash.

It's probably a good idea to reduce the amount of traffic in the skies that serves little purpose, especially when local government agencies are already trying to get a handle on traffic and now that everyone has sensors with them in the form of phones, it shouldn't be too hard to get better data than eyeballs in the sky.

The sound you hear from most of the helicopter reporters doesn't match the aircraft they fly. They overdub more traditional helicopter sounds on the audio. They have been doing this for decades.

My local market still has at least one TV helicopter.  Three stations that each used to have their own now share a camera feed from the same one.  There's also a helicopter that does radio traffic reports, which may or may not be the same one TV uses.

Some romantic flick with John Goodman (not in a romance part) as the traffic reporter in the chopper.

Depends on the market.  For whatever reason, we have a tornado chasing helicopter here, and the sound from their raw footage they put on YouTube have the same sound as you hear on the TV when they have a hot mic.

Our metro area hasn't had a traffic copter for some time now. Our local CBS affiliate still has their helicopter, but in this era of drones, I'm wondering how this is financially feasible. Multi-million dollar copter, pilot salary, upkeep, fuel, insurance, etc.  All vs. a couple grand for a nice drone and some HS kid with PS4-honed reflexes. Seems an easy bidness decision.
