Will they reboot the franchise or go with a ninth? It's reaching Star Trek territory here.

$100 million in the US and a completely massive $432 million everywhere else in the world. Ridiculous.

Supposing those numbers hold it's the biggest worldwide opening ever.

This Honkey Grandma Be Trippin': Supposing those numbers hold it's the biggest worldwide opening ever.

And it would have been bigger had they not opened on Easter weekend.  Fast 7 did 147 million in the USA on opening weekend.

Saw Fate of the Furious on Friday, was a lot of fun.  The hacked cars scene was great.  Theron's bad guy was good though her motivations still are super vague.  Statham and The Rock could do a split off buddy cop movie with their characters and I'd watch it.

Now that they've done under cover cop movie, underground racing movies, then heist movie, and now mercenary spy movies I'm guessing that in Fast 10 Dom gets bit by a radioactive convertable and after that they do a crossover with Transformers.

4.5billion. Given the gross keeps getting better, you can see this going past 10 without a doubt. It'll end up 6-7 billion dollar franchise... That's impressive.

We still have:
Time travel
Slasher
Western
Silent
Blaxpolitation
Comedy Horror

I expect a time travel steampunk western slasher film for #10 where the team has to go back and save Nikolaus Otto and then Karl Benz while fending off attacks from Cipher who has blackmailed Megatron who has been reprogrammed with all of the personalities that were inside Sid6.7

when they take this series to its' logical conclusion (be it something along Cronenbergs Crash or those news articles where guy is arrested for stickin his winkie in the tailpipe of a random truck), or even an illogical conclusion (space, time travel, post-apocalypse, furries) then and only then might i join those droves buying tickets to this series.

It's sad that The Fast and the Furious knows how to do it correctly and Star Trek doesn't anymore.

Vin Diesel uses his Fast and Furious monies to bankroll Riddick films.

So go see more F&F movies please, folks.

/yeah, the last RIddick film was almost the same as Pitch Black, not that was a bad thing

Go on. But Oliva Munn fits 'guilt complex with very short fuse' better.

Practical_Draconian: /yeah, the last RIddick film was almost the same as Pitch Black, not that was a bad thing

The last 2/3 of the film were "Pitch Black again because reasons I guess", but the first third of it was him wandering a deserted planet with his dog, and was in itself a better film than anything else in the franchise.

I kinda want to see more of that.  Not the survival sequence specifically, but that indication that the way the films are funded lets him go into interesting and experimental directions instead of doing whole-film homages to Alien over and over.  I actually kinda like the second film, looking back on it, because there was a lot of that kind of risk-taking in the story, even if it didn't work as well as in the most recent entry.

// Not that I object to the Alien/Aliens ripoff bits, there hasn't been an actual licensed Alien film that didn't suck since the 1990s so it's nice that someone's doing it well.

The only big issue is there was one dodgy FX shot.  All the rest of it looked great.  It was fun and there were a couple of WOW moments that had nothing to do with FX or cars or explosions.  These movies aren't smart, but they're funny, well put together, and most importantly fun.

Sadder the TREK fans are stuck in the past and won't let the films evolve.

/F&F doesn't resemble the first films at all either

I like the latest Fast and Furious installment. I am glad the franchise has evolved into what it is, these crime fighting caper movies. I do find it funny that this group has gone full circle from ones who really detest the cops and police to actually becoming the ones catching the bad guys. Speaking of bad guys I found Charlize Theron's character completely forgettable and just boring. The only other thing in this movie that was kind of iffy was the CGI in certain parts. This movie had a 250 million dollar budget but it sure didn't look like it at times.

Which is more than you can say about many summer blockbusters lately.  Bond's plots lately have made the F&F plots look reasonable.  The action of others rely on shaky camera, a million camera cuts or super close ups where you can't see what the hell is going on.

Large scale, imaginative action pieces with comedic banter and corny dramatic moments is a good formula and glad that it's working well for them.

You have to be talking about the shot where the horde of zombie cars comes careening around the corner.

Saw F8 on Friday night. It was not a "good' movie, in that the entire thing seemed to be based on a universe in which physics, not to mention logic, straight up don't exist.

I haven't enjoyed myself that much at a movie in a good five years. Absolutely loved just about every gleefully absurd minute of it.

Wow, at Thursday's RiffTrax I was guessing Fast and Furious 8 was going to pull in around 100 million. Sadly I went over.

I guess I better go see Ghost in the Shell and Your Name this upcoming weekend before those vanish.

That wasn't perfect, but the helicopter crash looked like a PS3 cut scene.

That sequence could have been its own movie.
Went and caught the Friday morning matinee. It was dumb as hell, but still enjoyable.
Another farker nailed it a few days ago pointing out that this franchise is like the Anti-Michael Bay.
The filmmakers are completely aware that the logic in the franchise went off the rails a long time ago, and now they're just having fun with it.
This one felt like a mashup of 80s action flicks (Statham and The Rock's interactions felt like they were putting together a treatment for a Tango and Cash remake), the crazier Roger Moore Bond movies, and a soap opera.

That's kind of the vibe I was feeling to.

I agree about the people who back and produce these films. I think they just have to much fun doing whatever they want so you get all kinds of absurd things. They have mastered going off the rails and I see nothing wrong with it because they play to those strengths and I have enjoyed the hell out of pretty much everything since the fifth movie when they went down this path.

She wasn't really given a lot to do.  Should have made her a bad ass and given her a fight scene or two.  She can play it pretty well.
