Just recast the part. There are a ton of old British guys who could've done that role and not looked like a video game cutscene.

It looked like the real thing to me, if not more menacing than in A New Hope.  And it tied into the brief appearance of Tarkin in Episode III.

He didn't come across as badly as Leia did.

I'm not sure if it was due to his face being shadowed so much or the fact that as an actor in the original, his face was never super expressive the way Fisher's was.

I've seen a comparison of frames of Leia in the original trilogy vs. Creepy Leia and some of the stills of Creepy Leia look fine, but when you see Creepy Leia in motion that uncanny valley problem kicks in and she just has dead eyes and a slack face.

I'm not sure why they would announce that now. That's pretty much tantamount to announcing that Leia is going to die in The Last Jedi. Admittedly less of a spoiler with Fisher dead, but still has to be a big moment in the film. Probably the ship she's on taking a shot to the bridge, or being destroyed. The alternative is to talk about Leia being off somewhere else in Episode IX which is dumb.

To be honest though I kinda expected that all the humans from the OT to be dead either by the end of IX or very early in X. The climax should be resolved by the new kids.

Why not just use the Ed Wood method for replacing dead actors?

That's what I thought.

Creepy Leia has dead eyes, like a Hooker or Republican. The manic coke fueled gleam is missing.

No.

If you're going to do that, might as well go complete NuTrek, recast everyone, and just remake the original three that everyone like.

/I wish Disney were dumb enough to do that.

I thought the CGI'd Tarkin and Leia were both bad.   They were better than, say... CGI young Flynn from Tron: Legacy, but still bad.   Leia bothered me less - probably because of the short screen time, but I get everyone's issues with her less expressive face and eyes.

Maybe if we created a neural network to make CGI more realistic, we could jump ahead a few decades with CGI technology.   As it is, it'll be another 10 to 20 years before we get out of that uncanny valley.

"We will see a lot of Carrie in '[Episode] XIII,' " Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy assured fans on Friday.

Somehow I doubt they really had plans for her in Episode 13 (bad proofreading).

I intentionally didn't read a single thing about the movie when I saw it. I even refused to watch the trailers. I wanted to be totally surprised. I had no idea about the CGI. I leaned over to my friend and said "holy shiat that guy looks just like freaking Tarkin". I figured Leia was just old clips from the cutting room floor worked into the story so she could have a cameo. I was completely fooled. With rewatch I can tell but it's really good. Haters ganna hate hate hate.

No hate here...  it was just bad.  I saw it without being told either was going to be CGI'd also, but I could tell.   I've seen enough video game cut-scenes to know CGI characters when I see 'em -- even well done ones.

If you want to see just how bad, there's youtube clips of the original Tarkin side-by-side the CGI one... and same for Leia.

A LOT of work was put into their CGI -- many layers, lighting, even using real actors to get the facial muscle input... but... still a long, long way to go.  If the characters stay still, it's much more difficult to detect.   When they talk, though...  it takes me out of the picture as if they were cartoons... b/c the lip movement is so poorly done.

Nope, because people (well, mostly ladies) are going out of their way to meet up in the middle from the other side of the valley.  Have you not noticed what passes for normal these days regarding plasticized botoxed overslathered make-up faces, boobs, and artificial butts?  It's farking frightening.  Those Housewife shows are far scarier than their CGI uncanny valley counterparts.  People routinely photoshop and filter their own damn selfies.  The new normal for faces is pretty much the same as CGI.

So instead of a young farmboy on a desert world, maybe replace him with a young salvage girl on a desert world, instead of a Princess having the Death Star schematics, maybe a stormtrooper defects or something, have a crazy Rebel pilot instead of a crazy smuggler pilot, swap R2 for... oh, never mind.

This is surprisingly accurate... Real life and RealDoll (TM) females have already begun to converge.   Plastic surgery has gone too far.

I liked the Tarkin digital makeup in Rogue One. Jeez... If you're willing to accept a CGI character like K-2SO being completely digital throughout the entire movie, then you should be able to suspend your disbelief for a few brief scenes of Guy Henry as Wilhuff Tarkin, using digital makeup to look like the previous actor to play the role in that era.

I'm fine with it. I really don't get why other people have such a hissy fit about it.
