Well, we all knew Anthony Davis was too explosive to be denied up front.

Wow.
The fuel truck's 31-year-old driver was reported to have moderate injuries.

How did he survive that?

No reaction at all. I probably would have let out an "Oh shiat" or something.

I'm thinking he had to have been thrown from the vehicle. Still, it's amazing.

For some reason, that was a lot more low-velocity than I was expecting.

Then again, that's probably typical of most BLEVEs.

I'm glad the driver took precautions and changed lanes when passing a massive fireball

Over the last several years, we've had two of these kind of crashes.  The first driver died, they're thinking he died prior to the wreck.  The second one, the driver had time to get out before it blew up.

I'm not sure, because if the tanker truck hit the dumptruck like it said in the article, you'd think the driver could have died at the time of impact.

Now, if the dumptruck hit the tanker, I could see how the driver of the tanker truck survived, the cab acted as a sort of blast shield

Nah. Truck and tractor cabs have lots of aluminum and fiberglass these days.
Luck, God, or the FSM.
I've rewatched it a bunch, but I can't make out the action, except for the big cloud of fuel that then ignites.

Meh, gasoline explosions look pretty but they don't really carry that much force.  When it's a liquid it tends to burn rather than to blow up which is why it has to be vaporized when it's injected into one of your engine cylinders and why driving around with an almost empty tank is more dangerous than a full one.

The real trick to an exploding tanker is surviving the aftermath.

Y'all are talking about the wrong act of divine intervention with the tanker driver surviving.  Take a gander at the hatchback that was in front of the explosion at about the 10 second mark TRAILING A HUNDRED FOOT long  VAPOR BURN that luckily burns out before it gets him too.

Yeah he just calmly changes lanes.

Me, I'd be freaking out.  My first instinct would be to pull over and stop, but then I'd realize that stopping near a big fireball is a bad idea so I continue slowly, but then I'd realize that I should GTFO ASAP and so I'd speed back up.  All the while veering randomly.

In short, I'd just make the situation worse.

Chalanta Brown, 44, was a mother of two and veteran truck driver, who according to her mother had loved big trucks since she was a little girl. The family currently feels no ill will towards the young man in the other truck, who is in critical condition.

Usually the person who is doing the rear-ending is at fault.  According tfa the Gas Tanker rear ended the dump truck.  Unless the dump truck driver break checked the guy, was going way too slow, Or cut him off abrubtly; my money is on him speeding way above or followed way too close.

That actually makes the most sense. Tank drivers are usually *a bit* more careful and trained than dumpers. That would also explain why the dump driver was killed and the tank driver is alive -- dump hit the tank from behind and/or caught an edge while doing something stupid like passing on the right. It would take a pretty good impact to open the tank and turn the fuel into an explosive mist. If the tank rear-ended the dump, tank driver would be dead, not vice versa.

Are the "make America great again" hats OK?

2017-04-15 03:09:15 PM
The video suggest one of two things: either the tank was rear-ended by the dump truck (supported by the explosion of mist before the explosion of fire; the dump truck may have blown open the tank with the impact) or the tanker sideswiped the dump truck, peeling it open like a banana.  This would support the story that the dump truck was rear-ended by the tanker, and explain how the tanker driver survived.

All that said, I watched it on a phone-sized screen, so I may have missed some details.

Not trying to dump on the dump truckers, but most tanker drivers are required to undergo a bit of HazMat certification.

Okay...high COG..."short(er)" wheelbase, yup.  Had a long-time friend send me a few pics of a MVA his department worked (years ago).  A mother and son were driving in a convertible, when a dump truck driver took a corner too hard, and dumped his load into their vehicle.  It was *asphalt*

local talk radio got a text that the dump truck had been going slowly w/o caution lights on. if so the tanker getting sliced open trying to pass makes sense.
