Yo, Russia, was the attack staged or was it perpetrated by terrorists? Pick one, you can't have both.

Now that Bashar Asshat has come out with the "there never was any nerve gas" bullshiat, Russia has to start twisting its narrative to fit it, so they're switching from "it was terrorists" to "it probably never even happened."

So if Assad is such a great guy why don't you do him a solid and accept all of the Syrian refugees into Russia. Obviously those people love Putin for all of the wonderful things he has done for their homeland.

Submitter, last I checked, it was Assad who's the one who're accused. So Russia isn't investigating itself, but rather Assad.

Well, unless of course Russia for some reason put Assad up to it. Which IMHO doesn't seem so plausible, given that they had a nice thing going, and didn't need any undue attention.

1) Russia supports the Assad Regime.
2) Syrian refugees are the people who are opposed to the Assad Regime.
3) Therefore Russians will not help people who are opposed to the regime they are propping up.

Logic, how does it work?

Having lived in a suburb of Sacramento I nicknamed "Little Moscow" it became very obvious that for these people having lived in years of communist rule, they developed the trait of "there is no right or wrong, but just what you can get away with"
I am sure I will get flamed on here for brush stroking a group of people, but it is amazing how many of them that came here were bigots, homophobic etc, and were 99% of the time involved in some illegal activity.
But hey....they are good Christians.
So when I see PootyPoot just blatantly deny there was a gas attack, I am reminded of where I used to live.

i think what he might be saying is that before the attack, Assad was winning, had the US willing to let him survive, and the rebels on their heels.
this chemical attack did nothing but hurt them both, so why would they do it when they were winning?

I don't believe anyone.

I'd like to see more proof than what is provided by terrorists like al-Nusra.
so far, that is all i have seen other than airplanes in the area at the time.

the prior sarin attacks used crude rockets with 2km range, which could not be definitively linked to either side, so airplanes are hardly proof of anything

Because they didn't deliberately gas anyone.  The Syrian gov attacked some facility held by anti-Assad rebels where some type of toxin was stored.  After blowing  up the toxic whatever it was the poison wafted over a populated area and killed a bunch of people.  Did the Syrian gov know this toxic goo was there and they bombed it anyway?  Was this a set-up concocted by some anti-Assad faction that they hoped would provide them with a lever they could use in the propaganda war against Assad?  Dunno, what I do know is that it most certainly was not Sarin.

timujin: Yo, Russia, was the attack staged or was it perpetrated by terrorists? Pick one, you can't have both.

Assad's forces dropped bombs. Assad also has an enemy with the motive and willingnessto pull off a concurrent attack. Whether they had the ability depends on if they had (a) chemical weapons and (b) the logistical prowess to pull off the attack during the bombing. (a) and (b) don't seem like difficult hurdles.

If the accusation the Assad is contradicting himself depends on parsing a difference between "someone staged this" and "someone used this as cover for a terror attack", then I'm going to say that that is a slender reed.

That said, Assad isn't a credible figure. He would be denying responsibility regardless of whether he did it.

No agreement that Assad is not a nice guy.   The question is: Qui bono?  Everyone pretty much agrees that Assad is winning, and there is nothing on the horizon that seems to counter that fact.  Why take such a drastic/desperate measure....one sure to turn world opinion against you when you don't  have to?

It's a tough question.

Here's one crazy fan theory that just might be true. Russia wants to test the new president. This happens every time the White House occupant changes. With Crimea, Russia's interest the warm water ports of Syria are expendable. But Syria still needs the Russians, so when Putin says, "see how far we can push the Americans," Assad may not have much of a choice. It's not exactly suicide, because the US is unlikely to overthrow Assad over 86 civilians. On the other hand, it is a risk and one that Russia doesn't want to take itself.

Whatever the truth is, I think, "OMG Assad is so crazy and stupid," is unlikely. The Assads haven't stayed on top for so long in a badly divided country by not thinking strategically.

The accusation is that Russia first said it was terrorists, then Assad came out and said it was neither his doing nor terrorists, that the attack was completely fake. Now the Russians seem to be agreeing, saying that there "is more and more evidence that this was staged". I'm assuming that by "staged", they mean "fake" as opposed to "carried out in order to make Assad look bad". If I'm misinterpreting, though, please let me know.
