So do the people not litter, or do they just have really efficient custodians?

I just figured Japan was so hyper-efficient they don't even produce garbage...

Been to Japan twice. I should say I was not surprised, but did marvel at how litter free it was.

I felt like it was a cultural thing. The people seemed to care.

It is a cultural thing. They have next to no garbage cans compared to other countries. All the train stations and public spaces would drown in trash if it were most other countries.

I wish it were so here in the US. The thought of how disgusting so many of us are really bums me way out. man.

I've called people on it many times. Sometimes effectively, but not usually.

CSB time: I was on my motorcycle at an intersection in the left turn lane waiting for the light to change. The driver in the car in front of me threw a soft drink lid and its accompanying straw out his window. I let out the clutch and rolled up alongside the car, picked up the trash, and threw it back in the car with the warning "I better not see that come back out". The dude just stared at me in disbelief. The light changed, and we all started to move. I fell back in behind the car, and that is when I notice a police cruiser two cars behind me. Apparently he'd watched the whole thing. Before I even got through the intersection he lit up his red. The car in front of me pulled into the first driveway on the right, I started to pull over a few yards after that, but the cop pulled in behind the scumbag who tossed the litter. I smiled to myself, dropped the clutch, and rolled on.

Well it's cultural in that it was a knee jerk reaction to the 1995 Sarin Subway Attacks when the Japanese government moved to remove all possible terrorist attack vectors, trashcans being assumed an one.  They just never came back for the most part.

Interestingly enough there used to be more litter in Japan when they *did* use a lot of public trash receptacles.  But when the garbage cans went away, so did a lot of the public trash.  Reflexively weird.

/Still a fairly clean country

It's weird there.  People like, follow the rules and aren't total dicks.

Now navigate around Portland, OR streets and freeways and see the homeless tent cities along the roadsides that have turned this place into a colossal dump. It's all well and fine letting indigent folks sleep in public spaces but if they don't have easy access to garbage cans your town is going to turn into a landfill.

No litter? Ha! No.

They must've taken the pictures right after a cleaning.
