The bill will also allow a person with a weapons permit to bring a concealed handgun into the state Capitol.

hope they don't live (or die) to regret that one

Jesus Christ, I've about had it with these inflammatory headlines. Without provocation? Come on, subby, show at least a little integrity. Nothing about the law gives people the right to "shoot without provocation." The law is about "standing your ground," which means someone must be -- and here's the important part -- threatening the ground upon which you are standing. Like, maybe someone is coming toward you and they're being aggressively black, or wearing an aggressively threatening headscarf, or they're speaking a particularly aggressive form of Latino or Mexican. Maybe it's an aggressively dark teenager listening to hip hop or a car rolling by with aggressively loud bass. Maybe someone is wearing a hoodie that prevents you from identifying whether they're aggressively black (or headscarfed). Maybe they're aggressively gay. The point is that if you wait to see whether that aggressive behavior, whatever it is, translates into actual aggression toward you, it could be too late. So, you stand your ground. Perhaps you'd rather carry around a sign that says, "I'm unarmed, please do not threaten or intimidate me?" Yeah, good luck with that.

Don't forget that guy who stands too close behind you in line at McDonald's. That mofo is going down.

I went to the University of Iowa in the early 90s, back then Iowa - Des Moines and parts east - was so liberal it made San Francisco look like Provo. I honestly don't understand what has happened to that state.

Apathy in the East, along with erosion in good-paying blue collar jobs in places like Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities - which has led to the type of voters Trump tapped into this year.  Add some real enthusiasm from the Derp out in Western Iowa, and mix in a little of Iowa being behind the curve, so the Tea Party revolution is probably peaking there about now.

/Or they just see how great things are going in Wisconsin and Kansas

I grew up around Sioux City and honestly do not remember the high proportion of dumbasses that seem to exist there today. But then, I was a kid and didn't really have much to compare my surroundings to.

For some reason, I can't see too many white people being shot.
Maybe if that starts happening, they'll take another look at this law.

With the predictable surplus of corpses, I wouldn't wnat to eat any "beef product" that comes out of that state either. It would probably taste like chicken.

On the other hand, if the survivors get really skilled at killing, hire them out as body guards, kinds of like the Swiss Guards, only from Iowa, wearing overall with pieces of straw in their shoes.

Honest question about stand your ground laws.

Guy 1 and Guy 2 are arguing about a parking space. Guy 1 says "I'm gonna curb stomp your ass" and shoves Guy 2. Guy 2 says "oh yeah? I'm gonna blow your brains out and reaches into his car." Guy 1 reaches into his waistband and pulls out a gun, shooting Guy 1 in the stomach just as he turns around to blast Guy 2 in the face. As they both lie dying on the pavement, would they have been better or worse off if neither had a gun?

Hooray!

Findings  This study used an interrupted time series design to analyze changes in rates of homicide and firearm-related homicide. We found that the implementation of Florida's stand your ground law was associated with a 24.4% increase in homicide and a 31.6% increase in firearm-related homicide.

Headline: ...anyone with a gun can legally shoot and kill you without provocation

Law (Iowa HF517*): "Reasonable force" means that force and no more which a reasonable person, in like circumstances, would judge to be necessary to prevent an injury or loss and can include deadly force if it is reasonable to believe that such force is necessary to avoid injury or risk to one's life or safety or the life or safety of another, or it is reasonable to believe that such force is necessary to resist a like force or threat. ... ["Stand Your Ground Addition" (Section 3): ] A person who is not engaged in illegal activity has no duty to retreat from any place where the person is lawfully present before using force as specified in this chapter.

Yep, those two quotes say about the same thing.

Technically shootouts and shootings are different things. In the prior the firing lane is two way, in the latter it's one way.

Depends on how you evaluate the quality of life. In your scenario, both individuals seem more than a little unstable, and if flying off the handle as easily as that is an expected behavior of their lives, then chances are they would (or should) have been convicted of a number of crimes that should have resulted in both of them being deprived of their right to carry long before this showdown occurs.

However, looking at your scenario at face value without factoring in any other outside context, I'd probably say they did society a favor by removing themselves from it through reckless behavior. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I appreciate your point, but you should be aware that it doesn't get much more "red state" than Libertarianism.

It's LITERALLY "Fark you I got mine, and a gun to keep you from getting any of it!" combined with "Ain't no court gonna force us not to discriminate!" with a dash of "Workers don't have 'rights', they have a got-damn job to do!" thrown in for good measure.
