(Wired)   U.S. Army stages mock assault on E3 expo with Blackhawk helicopters and real assault rifles. Without telling anyone it was a promotion. Hilarity ensues   (wired.com) divider line 131

Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein:ET... the two best teamplay first person shooters out there!

Soldier of Fortune 2 is cool too :)

Americas Army needs a decent mapper. They all suck.

As an ex-Air Force officer, let me be the first to say that this is another example of Army intelligence. I remember seeing manuals for Army troops with "turn the page" at the bottom.

I see no mention of a "significant other" in your post.
You better keep ducking. :p

I liked the link to grab life by the joystick

Wish the old lady would.

Gamer girls are the best people to date. I mean seriously, what else is there to do in life besides play video games?

2004-05-14 04:57:21 PM
Sweet. No amount of tax dollars is too much to spend promoting THE BEST VIDEO GAME EVER. EVER! (Remember that next time you get mauled by "I_shoot_friendlies")

"As an ex-Air Force officer, let me be the first to say that this is another example of Army intelligence. I remember seeing manuals for Army troops with "turn the page" at the bottom."
Hey, that joke almost made sense!

2004-05-14 04:59:07 PM
BTW, Pipeline SF, Pipeline, and Weapons Cache (not SE) are the best maps.

2004-05-14 04:59:51 PM
maybe someone got to the highest wanted level on GTA: San Andreas. If the army really shows up to kick my @ss everytime that occurs, maybe i'm not so excited about the game now!

2004-05-14 05:00:10 PM
It's to get you used to it so that it won't be such a shock when Martial Law is declared.

I too heart Gamer Girls. Not vacuous "booth babes" that are "Bacardi Girls" and the "Swedish Bikini Team" on alternate nights, but the real gals who really play.

2004-05-14 05:00:52 PM
If you rtfa, you would realize that pre-notice was indeed given, it was only those locked into tiny little ziplock bubbles that werent expecting the promotion. And they didnt rapel from the chopper, they climbed off the chopper onto a roof and rappeled down the wall.

esteban9
As an ex army sgt, let me be the first to say i remember seeing pictures of the bottoms of Air Force officers that said 'turn the page' because they were too damned big to fit on just one.

2004-05-14 05:02:02 PM
wil

It was probably filming for this week's episode of 24. They had two jets and a big 'ol helicopter explosion in the LA River in that episode.

2004-05-14 05:05:04 PM
Hulk,
Yeah, sure, there were some officers that needed to be on the fat boy program. But we're talking intelligence here, man, not butts. Stay the course, man.

2004-05-14 05:05:31 PM
Wil,

Fox11, KCal 9 and a couple of the other stations gave 2 day notice that 24 would be doign the fly bys.

2004-05-14 05:05:38 PM
It would have been cooler if the chopper had been shot down by E3 insurgents.

2004-05-14 05:06:05 PM
The armed forces have specific budgets already laid out for participation in activities like this that give them a positive image in the viewers eyes. For example, the Navy's participation/assistance with JAG. The same with the Air Force and Stargate SG-1. This didn't cost you anything extra.

2004-05-14 05:06:48 PM
The prisoner abuse in Iraq is yet another example that young, oversexed, young Army grunts need SUPERVISION!

2004-05-14 05:07:33 PM
Bah, what a bunch of crap. Yeah sure, they didn't tell anyone, well except for the helicopter parked on the ground underneath the huge America's Army sign and next to the big display showing the times of all the shows for the day, the 30 or 40 other people in uniforms standing around it, the huge crowd oohing and ahhing at the show, and the guy on the loudspeaker giving running commentary as they performed their manuevers. Except for that it was impossible to tell it was a show. Idiot submitter and Wired.

Wil, I saw those jets too, they did like 20 or so loops right over my house. It was cool but a little worrying at the time.

Anyway, have a pic of some E3 Booth babes I took yesterday:

In my humble opinion, video games are not a waste of money. I get far more entertainment out of my video game dollar than I get from going to a movie. The waste of money is in the Army pulling this kind of stunt.

I'm gonna go play Farcry now..."

i'd rather they waste it this way, than play one more "Army of One" commercial.

Farcry sucks.

i have subscriptions to 4 games right now, and it's more expensive than me going outside, reading a book, and my gym membership.

2004-05-14 05:09:28 PM
mmmmm..booth babes.... Somehow, I suspect E3 booth babes are hotter than MacWorld booth babes.

2004-05-14 05:10:12 PM
My Farkin tax dollars hard at work.

2004-05-14 05:12:42 PM
Hmm - the article mentions nothing about hilarity ensuing. It just shows some army guys rapelling down a GIANT ARMY BILLBOARD. The article is an advertisement for E3 and we all fell for it. To the guy who posted this - FU, I hope you enjoy your little viral marketing paycheck.

2004-05-14 05:13:27 PM
Too bad nobody shot back. Of course most gamers aren't armed.

/note I said MOST

Did anyone else see the e3-2004 hl2 demo yet? :-0 at the end they showed counter-strike running in hl2, it looked beautiful! and so does the rest of the game, but the cs demo at the end blew me away.

Here's
where i downloaded it from, it's a torrent file for you bittorrent users. If you don't use bittorrent it is also on fileplanet.

2004-05-14 05:16:39 PM
Hasn't your farking army got better stuff to worry about than making video games?

Oh, I see, they need to desensitize every kid in the country so they'll be already prepared to kill innocent civilians from the moment they're drafted.

2004-05-14 05:18:42 PM
I always find it exceedingly amusing when people who post on message boards, especially Fark, call video games a "waste of time".

2004-05-14 05:19:11 PM
Wil I live in SD. I couldn't go to E3 this year because my company was giving -its- trade show down here. It was funny watching slimy salesmen get all paranoid when the jets/choppers zoomed past. People who work or live anywhere near Miramar don't even bother to look up. You just stop talking mid-sentance, and pick up whatever you left off like nothing happened once they go past. One guy asked me if we were in any danger, apparently he thought the jets only fly when we are being invaded.

2004-05-14 05:19:45 PM
would you call them a constructive use of your time?

(unless you sell your stuff on Ebay)

2004-05-14 05:20:45 PM
Of course.
Is Farking (posting on Fark, not intercourse) a constructive use of your time?

2004-05-14 05:20:57 PM
Haha, I was just leaving E3 when I saw the BlackHawk helicopter fly overhead. Maybe I'm just not as jumpy as the rest of the world, but I immediately knew it was for the Army game being promoted. I think these people need to go watch the new "Chicken Little" movie that's coming out...

2004-05-14 05:23:18 PM
Wow - is this a convention of 20,000 people who act like Comic Book Guy?

2004-05-14 05:23:24 PM
Where's my Madden 2005?!??!?!?!

2004-05-14 05:25:06 PM
I'm surprised Wil didn't start blaming Haliburton.

2004-05-14 05:25:18 PM
I work next door...they do this every year. Asshats.

2004-05-14 05:26:15 PM
i'm willing to admit that posting here is a huge waste of time, just as video games are.

(not complaining, just telling it how it is.)

2004-05-14 05:29:12 PM
The writer of the article was stupid, America's Army came out last year.

This stunt was all about hyping the up and coming Full Spectrum Warrior, which looks to be like a totally awesome game.

2004-05-14 05:30:53 PM
AA is releasing it's new patch soon. the one with vehicles. i know they had a booth.

damn wedding kept me from attending. stupid friends and their stupid wives.

2004-05-14 05:31:14 PM
Yeah right Irving, it didn't cost us a thing...not an economics major I take it. I don't care if the money was 'set-aside', or not, where do you think I CAME FROM... A TREE ?!?! They took some of our tax money and set it aside for wasting on BS like this, that means we shouldn't care ?
As for the revolutionary game...NOT, it is a hum drum same as everything UT clone with out even any imagination factor, the reason there are 3.3 billion, or so registered users it that it registers every install and re-install as a new unique customer and never removes the old ones.

The whole idea that this FPS provides ANYTHING like what someone would encounter in a 'live' firefight is patently absurd. Even hundreds of hours 'range' time doesn't prepare one for the first shot back or the REALITY of a gunshoot wound or death by violence. Heck the smell of blood and dirt mixed with burned flesh and CS gas has been known to send some seasoned professionals down for a prayer session.

The hand-eye coordination thing may very well be true, but the fastest gun rarely wins in the real world, while the steadiest often survives...

BTW I retired with a .25 slug in my left shoulder acquired during a 'live' firefight with several crank dealers and their animals, or girlfriends however you want to say it...

2004-05-14 05:33:31 PM
That's what pisses me off about AA. No amount of video games will train you for combat, even psychologically. All that finely honed strategy goes out the window when someone starts shooting at you. Oh yeah, there's no respawning.

2004-05-14 05:34:41 PM
AA has implemented some decent physics into their game. bullets go through doors (which change thier trajectory) bullets ricochet off of metal objects. if you take a hit you can bleed out.

they're working on it. overall i say they're doing a good job.

2004-05-14 05:35:35 PM
A gathering of 20,000 freaks? Didn't they burn up when they went into the sunlight to get to their cars? Blast the building and get rid of them once and for all. Game conventions and anime conventions alike should have more military presence, preferably with guns-a-blazin'.

2004-05-14 05:37:04 PM
Oh, I see, they need to desensitize every kid in the country so they'll be already prepared to kill innocent civilians from the moment they're drafted.

Actually, shooting friendlies and non-combatants is strongly discouraged in AA. The enemy you're fighting is very military, and menacing-looking. The civilians cower (eg. in the hospital raid) and whicever side you're on, your mission is to protect them.

I have no doubt that AA is at least partly intended as a recruiting tool, but it mostly just reminds ME why I would suck in a real war. Random death and running scared half the time aren't my cup of tea.

Um, no, it wasn't.

Duke Nukem Forever (and booth babes)

I just got back from interop. No booth babes to speak of.

So we went to Cheetahs

Thanks for yelling fire in a crowded theatre.

p.s. enjoy the lawsuit(s)

2004-05-14 05:45:59 PM
My wife is launching Half-Life 2 for VUG. ha! Take that you geeks!

She also somehow got volunteered to stand in for a missing booth babe while Vin Deisel was there signing whatever it was he signs.

I live in video game heaven. Too bad I don't play many video games.

2004-05-14 05:51:45 PM
That was the most useless article ever.

Also, why is the Army promoting a game that's been out for... what, two years now?

2004-05-14 05:54:34 PM
Did they premiere the new Magic the Gathering - Gold Edition from Microprose at E3 this year?

2004-05-14 06:07:28 PM
I think I'm going to call up the Army, and have them announce my arrival to work on Monday by rappelling down the front of my building. I'd get alot more respect around here if I arrived amid a flashbang and soldiers with assault rifles rushing through the front door. I for one think this seems like a pretty cool stunt. It didn't cost much, it no doubt got folks excited, and it was probably pretty fun for the soldiers involved. No harm, no foul, IMO.

2004-05-14 06:10:02 PM
I remember reading about the marines or somebody staging a training "raid" in the middle of San Antonio at about 2 in the morning. Trouble was, they neglected to contact the San Antonio Police Department before going in. Oops.

As I remember, a couple of patrolmen happenned to be in the area when the marines "dropped in", they for some reason refused to drop their assault rifles at the request of the officers and at least one of them was shot. I guess they thought it was part of the drill. At least until the first round hit. The chief of police was royally pissed and has refused to allow these training drills several times since.

Lesson #1: If you are planning an event where weapons are being used or even simulated, TELL THE farkING COPS FIRST.

Lesson #2: If a policeman is pointing a gun at you and has ordered you to drop your weapon, DO IT. Being a marine doesn't make you bulletproof.

Dumbasses.
