I thought E3 was to showcase new stuff. The article is talking about America's Army, which has been out for some time. Also some of the pics are people playing Delta Force : Black Hawk Down, and that game has been collecting dust on my desk for almost a year.

I checked the article date, and it's current, so I just don't understand.

Anybody care to guess how many of our tax dollars went into this stunt?

2004-05-14 02:04:29 PM
mad_asshatter Who cares? Compared to most government waste at least it was pretty cool. Maybe they had a recruiter on site.

There is some movie filming in town (shocking -- it's not shooting in Toronto) and they are using TONS of military hardware.

A week or so ago, there were two fighter planes flying around for some scenes, and there were all these explosions near . . . somewhere near downtown, I think. Maybe it was in the LA River?

Of course, nobody bothered to let the majority of LA know that it was just a movie, and I ran into several people that day who were seriously freaked out by the two jets "patrolling" the skies above our city.

Headline is a little missleading, according to the article nobody seemed to notice. The two women standing next to the "General Lee" in the shorts did get my attention though.

and after the army scared the beejezuz of out everyone, they said "G.O.T.C.H.A.!"

2004-05-14 04:37:42 PM
Just so you know, all the money for making and promoting the game comes from the Army's already existing promotions budget. Basically, they didn't spend any new money on this, they're just buy TV ads, etc.

2004-05-14 04:38:02 PM
Meh.

1) Pic linked in the article shows them rappelling down a giant "america's army" billboard. I'd have to wonder if anyone was *really* frightened by this. Any other sources, or was Wired just "sexing up" the story?

2) Costs for stuff like this are often justified (and rightly so) as recruiting costs or public relations. Same deal with airshows. The costs are hard to fix, since many of the things they do are done as training anyway -- the only difference is that people are allowed/invited to watch. [Of course, since the article is scant on any details, it's hard to argue pro or con for what went on.]

You know? I never understood how a person could sit and play these games. I mean, I've got grass to mow, house to keep, 40+ hour job. Where do people find time? I worked with a guy that waited all night at a Wally-mart to buy some new game station thing-a-ma-jig. WTF? He's 31!! Get a freak'n life.

ahh, that explains it!
yesterday i saw a father son team that was freightening: the father was middle-aged, over weight, and wearing a tucked in striped shirt with a pda on his belt. his son, appearing to be in highschool, was dressed exactly the same. they were both carrying 'xbox' bags.

you answered your own question.. of course you don't understand when you call it a 'thing-a-ma-jig' and have no idea what it even is.

its hard to argue for or against something when you don't even know what it is haha. its just something people do for fun.. like camping or skiing. /shrug. not everyone has to like it to make it ok.

Maybe it was in the LA River?

Heh, that's a good one. Like it's really a "river" at all. :)

Actually, DrupyDrawers, it's largely a student/jobless thing- when I was schooling full time a few years back,
I played Redneck Rampage to excess- BUT it was a good "downshift" from studying coding eight or ten
hours a day... Now I have a 40+ job, a boat i'm restoring,
lawns to mow, places to go, people to see, and the ol'
home PC sits largely unused- Found it a job feeding MP3's
into the stereo...

By not watching whatever (almost) mindless drivel is on the TV, often. Or not going out and partying/getting drunk on weekends. Things you do with your leisure time may be seen as useless or mind-numbingly boring by others.

Not saying you have to be a social outcast to play games or anything, just that people make different choices about what to do with free time :)

In my humble opinion, video games are not a waste of money. I get far more entertainment out of my video game dollar than I get from going to a movie. The waste of money is in the Army pulling this kind of stunt.

I'm gonna go play Farcry now...

America's Army is always evolving. It started out with basic infantry soldiers, then with each new patch added snipers, Airborne troops, Rangers, Medics, and Special Forces. Last I heard, they were going to release a new patch adding ground vehicles (like the new Styker fighting vehicle).

Black Hawk Down recently released an expansion pack, called something like Team Sabre.

2004-05-14 04:48:30 PM
I saw the choppers yesterday. No soldiers rapelling though. Looked like they were giving people joyrides. The blackhawk was hovering and fools were waving out.
