I haven't had strep since my age was in single digits. Until recently, I literally thought it was only a disease children got.

I used to get it often as a child - enough that I knew when I got it.  Late 20s and it haplens again.  Receptionist, nurse, and doctor all insisted it wasn't strep but they humored me and eventually I got tested.  Strep.

I had a raging case of people last year. I had to take these big pills and drink lots of water.

2017-03-20 03:47:54 PM
A woman with no arms and no legs was lying on a beach crying when a fellow walking by noticed, and stopped to ask her what was wrong. "I'm 40 years old, and I've never been hugged" she sobbed. The man, feeling sorry for her, picked her up, gave her a great big hug, set her back down on her beach blanket and went on about his way.

A little while later another man came along and found the woman crying again. The man asked her what was wrong and the woman replied "I'm 40 years old and I've never been kissed". The man, feeling sorry for the woman, picked her up, gave her a passionate kiss, then gently set her back down on the blanket before going on about his way.

About a half-hour later, the woman, sobbing once more, is approached by a third man who inquires about her sadness. "I'm 40 years old and I've never been screwed", the lady bawls. The man picks her up and tosses her into the ocean. "Well you're screwed now, ain't ya, biatch!" he exclaims.

Strep throat is basically the same bacteria as flesh-eating desease. So if you have it, start coughing on your enemies.

When you get strep throat, the antibiotics aren't for your throat.  The antibiotics are to prevent the strep bacteria from accidentally teaching your immune system to attack your own heart.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheumatic_fever

So remember that next time you try to suck it up and not go to the doctor.

Wow, that article provides a thorough explanation on how the strep throat caused her septic shock. I also like how, at the end, it tells us exactly how the medication prevented blood flow to her extremities.

snowshovel: Strep throat is basically the same bacteria as flesh-eating desease. So if you have it, start coughing on your enemies.

No, it's not.  Necrotizing fasciitis is a condition caused when a bacterial infection, most notably MRSA, progresses incredibly rapidly.  The toxins given off by the bacteria cause healthy flesh to die (not get eaten).  This could result in amputation, but it's usually on the order of entire limbs in order to stop the progression of the infection.

This woman had an exceptionally bad strep infection, which led to toxic/septic shock.  She was given medicines to protect her internal organs, which reduced blood flow to her extremities.  That is what required their amputation, not the bacterial infection.

As someone who just declined a strep test this morning, I'm getting a kick...

Really, though, I've had two negative strep tests in the past 4 months, so these same exact symptoms probably aren't it. Last time I had strep, 4 years ago, I went from relatively healthy to 104 fever in about half a day and fainted in the urgent care office while they were running the quick-strep test. I'm not *that* bad currently. But I do get to decide whether the recurrent throat issues are worth a tonsillectomy soon. First time my doctor's recommended one in 5 years, she says! Hooray, me!

I was gonna comment that I saw a man had suffered the same thing from strep throat. Hope this isn't becoming a more common occurrence with strep. I used to get it all the time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streptococcus

"The invasive infections caused by group A β-hemolytic streptococci tend to be more severe and less common. This occurs when the bacterium is able to infect areas where it is not usually found, such as the blood and the organs.[9] The diseases that may be caused include streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, necrotizing fasciitis, pneumonia, and bacteremia.[8] Globally, GAS has been estimated to cause more than 500,000 deaths every year, making it one of the world's leading pathogens.[8]"

Yes Streptococcus can case 'flesh eating disease.'

Enter math.  Sore throat, front of your neck lymph node enlargement, your tonsils have crap on them and no cough.  1 point for each one you have.  Add one if you're under 14, Subtract one if you're older than 45.  Score range -1 to 5.
