And for what are they inmates?

Dig if you will the picture,

And end to the war on drugs.
Empty prisons,
less single mothers,
no more gang bangin' thugs.

No DEA
No vice cops
shooting unarmed kids in the street.

This is what it sounds like, when Sam weeps.

Not such a smart move for the prison.  If they actually invest in education and rehabilitation, how will they get repeat customers?  Didn't think that one through, did ya?

Really?  I went to my second one with my eldest this year.  We had a lot of fun.
Then again, its a Catholic high school.  There is a bar.

Indeed. It's an enormous erection with a bulbous head, holding a huge quantity of fluid pent up until it can gush out in a enormous foamy cataract of ecstatic release. Seems curiously appropriate, for some reason.

One of the worst things about jail (besides the oppressive boredom) is being surrounded by nothing but jail, day in, day out, and a tiny distorted window to the outside world via TV and the rare visit, and maybe Sunday services if you're into that. Jail culture feeds on itself because it has nothing else. Introducing the outside world in a tactile way regularly, instead of through bulletproof glass, would help keep the level of cabin-fever and jail culture indoctrination way down.

(Obviously, this applies to minimum security inmates, not violent ones.)

If you have a chance to do your jail time on weekends or a pay-to-stay, it's worth it. Intake is the shiattiest experience I've ever had, but if I had to do the first stint all over again, doing it once a week for a few months instead of a month straight of slowly losing hope and connection to the real world would have been worth it.

To keep the war on anything going on, really. War on Drugs, War on Terrorism, War on Immigration, War on ... you name it. Much easier to pick someone's pocket if they're yelling at someone else, after all.

Remember when we sent 363 tons of cash into a war zone? Same thing.

I think that if we are really going to treat prison as rehab and not torture, these things are a valuable tool.  "Hey, don't f*ck up again and you can see your kids all day every day".

You really actually teared up at a photo on the internet, with none of the experience of being there. Please stay home, don't drive for gods sake, god forbid you see one of those RIP things gang members put on their back windows. I can sympathize, I can empathize at times but a picture of people I don't know wont make me cry. I think your lying. No you are a liar.

Fark off. I've been an asshole on the internet for at least 20 years, but I've also got a soft spot for kids stuck in shiatty places, even ones I'll never meet. So sue me, I'm not you.

This is one of the few good things RVA has done with their inmates. That said, a real eye-opener is being at the courthouse on arraignment day. If the John Marshall courthouse goes a day without a bomb threat, the staff think something's wrong.

The fathers are allowed 10 minutes for private "grope-time" with the daughters after the dance.  This can be anything from an innocuous but awkward hug session to use your imagination.

I used to "dance" with my daughter when she was 2 to maybe 8, she liked how I spun her around.  It was fun, the whole teen daughter with Dad thing the fundies do is just creepy.

The story in the article is totally sweet, I missed my daughters birthday a few years ago because I was in the hospital and I really wanted her to know how much I love her and things like this do.

I like how you bothered to find out what they were in for before projecting what you think will happen.  As a side note it was a war that broke up families, just not so much the war on drugs.  It was Johnsons war on poverty.

THIS. Families can go to prison right along with their loved ones, even though they are not behind walls. They wait just as the inmates do, especially if they are children.

I'm more impressed by the parenting classes.
This is a good thing.

I wish more jails would do this.
One of the ways our (NEW) local Sheriff guaranteed recidivism was to kick all the volunteers out of the jail.
We used to be able to teach basic education classes, i.e., basic math, how to write a resume, set a budget, balance a checkbook, mediation and plan and cook meals for a family.
N.A. and A.A. were welcome.
The residents would come in at the beginning, just looking for a way out of their cells for a couple of hours.  They would leave conversing, excited, forming study groups--talking about the future.
I really respected the old sheriff.

NOW  with the new sheriff.
Anyone wanting to teach must have a Masters and may only teach in their discipline.
Want to teach how to set a budget? Mathematics, Econ or Family Finances.
Want to counsel addicts and alcoholics?
Must be certified through the state.

Unbelievable.  He gets away with it because he takes in prisoners from out of the area (for money) and cannot insure the "safety" of the volunteers.
We are actively looking for someone to run against him.

Right because allowing drug use will all of a sudden make men marry the women they knock up. Weird, seems like a lot of men not in jail don't marry their kids moms. Thugs will be thugs regardless of their medium. Finally drugs destroy lives. Making meth legal doesn't change the fact it is meth. Alcohol is legal and ruins so many lives. You're a fool.
