My mom's pharmacy wouldn't take anything after she died. We were advised to trash it, pouring the one liquid medicine into kitty litter. None of what she had was a narcotic. I think her antidepressant might have been scheduled.

Incinerating it, are they? So they just don't care about all the children that will drown, I guess.

Pete's gotten a little gun shy since the whole "Linzess Incident".  Even he's demanding to see a prescription these days.

and while Pete's detoxing you can give them to his brother, 30 1 day sober Pete

Controlled substances are put in a special envelope, found at the pharmacy counter, and the individual mails them to a hazardous waste disposal site in Texas.

Suuuuure they are.  More like the 'individual' has a tidy side business going.

I was walking down a street with my girlfriend when I was in high school back in the 70s. She saw a pill on the sidewalk. Picked it up and swallowed it. She's still alive and functioning, go figure.

Nope. But they're both cousins to Confused Pete.

We have one of these collection boxes at our Sheriff's department. I think they'd be far more likely to be used at a pharmacy, but I'm guessing ours don't want the hassle when someone breaks in hoping to get something good and instead finds only grandpa's 50 year old Goody's powder and bottle of mercurochrome.

They did get the address wrong. In ten years, they'll discover the mistake. By then I'll be in the south of France.

Yeah, because what pharmacy would sell expired medication? It's not like we haven't seen lawsuits and closed pharmacies over the last two decades from that, right?

I wonder if it's different if they know you have controlled drugs. When my sister passed, I didn't even get a kind word from the hospice folks before they went tearing through the house grabbing up all her morphine. Heck, the cops were kinder. I guess they figured that if I'd wanted it, I would've gotten it before I called anyone.

I for one am impressed that you can see inside of the closed safe and can determine that it was not bolted to the floor from the interior floor of the safe, which has been every design I've ever seen utilized. I suppose you could put the bolts on the exterior of the safe if your aim was to look at pretty bolts and slow the burglar by a few seconds  before they walked out with your safe.

I thought the correct way to dispose of them was to make a giant pile of them at a party, and then feed them to a horse.

...assuming drugs ever made it into the safe in the first place. "Oh, is that a whole bag of expired opioids? Sure, I'll put that right in the safe for you... gimme."

Watching 7 seasons of Nurse Jackie has made me super curious to try vicodin and such. You just never encounter them here though.

Rather disturbing.  They are spending $400,000 to collect expired drugs.  Meanwhile, elder people who are taking drugs and have been told by their physicians "you can't stop taking this cold turkey" are having to decide whether to eat, pay for heat, or get their medicines.

No offense, but it's really strange how an advanced country like the US is really behind the times when it comes to the medical system and its peripherals.  And sometimes you really complicate things needlessly.

My local pharmacy, every pharmacy in fact,  has been taking back old meds for at least 10 years, maybe more. Any day, any med, even old supplements. No need to bag them or send them off somewhere, just drop them in the special chute at the prescriptions counter and they will handle the disposal.

The hospice nurses on site when my mother died took care of all that, right on the breakfast table. The other stuff (previously prescribed) was up to us to handle.

Just take that old, long expired medical marijuana out into the back yard, put it in your charcoal grill and set it ablaze. Your neighbors might complain for a minute or two but they will mellow out pretty quickly, especially if you offer them some coo

I've been on lots of different anti-depressants and such as one stops working after a while or another one doesn't work at all. I had amassed quite a lot of them at one point. I really wanted to make a mosaic and present it to my shrink, but I couldn't figure out what to use to stick the pills together that wouldn't melt them. Also, I suspect my shrink wouldn't have been as impressed as I would have hoped.

This isn't easier, this is harder.

Easy is just throwing it in the garbage.  You know who's searching through your garbage looking for hidden medicine?  Nobody.

And the idea of it getting leeched into the groundwater is ridiculous.  You know what happens when a million gallons of water mixes with one bottle of ibuprofen?  It becomes so diluted that it does nothing.

You're kidding, right?  If you do that, it becomes homeopathic ibuprofen.  Everybody knows that when you dilute something that much, it does the opposite of what it does at full strength, so that's going to cause everybody fever and pain!
