One of these movies will apparently be titled "Alien: Awakening" and take place between the events of Scott's "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant."

So we got a prequel to the original, a sequel to the prequel, and now a midquel between the prequel and the sequel/prequel to the original.

This is starting to remind me of the Foundation books. Asimov had no idea how to end it so he spent the last years of his life writing pointless prequels and weird crossover stories to hide his time.

It's been a long time since I've read the Foundation series. . .didn't they end it with explorers discovering the long-lost mythical world of Earth, and that R. Daneel Olivaw was living in seclusion on the moon, incredibly upgraded over around 20,000 years of life, and was secretly a mastermind that had been running much of galactic civilization from behind the scenes?

Yup!

After that is when he started writing all the prequels, not knowing how to finish everything.

Look the Prometheus crew was not the best and brightest.

The were the C students at best.

All socially mal adjusted with reason enough each to take a job with no details given other than their field is needed.

Pay was good obviously and these people probably never had or would have a payday as good as Wyland offered.

So the weren't stupid, they were in
over their heads.

The three prequels written by Benford, Brin, and Bear are nice stand-alone stories.

More likely he couldn't write and was simply building an estate.  He knew from long experience that he could sell *anything* to a publisher as long as it was claimed to be a "foundation novel" (and the publishers knew it would fly out of the bookstores).  No idea why he (and Heinlein, and more than a few others) felt a need to tie all their works together.

They were space truckers. Not saying truckers can't be smart, but stereotypes aren't created in a vacuum, unless it's in space, then they are created in a vacuum. Anyway, I had a point in there somewhere and now it's gone.

Don't forget that he suffered mental problems from HIV/AIDS during his later years until his death. He contracted it from a blood transfusion in 1983 and died in 1992.

He was also an incredibly prolific writer who cranked out more than 500 books and 90,000 personal letters in numerous subjects, fictional and non-fictional. I read one of his later crossover novels and wanted to shoot his editor. It read like pure word diarrhea in desperate need of some heavy handed editing. But at that point the publishing industry had long since changed from selling tightly constructed 200-300 page books at a fixed price to binding as much paper as they could stuff between some covers and selling for whatever the market would bear.

I'd like to know what the crew of the Nostromo did wrong, exactly?  You'll notice there's no Idiot Ball entry for that one on TVTropes. The one for Prometheus is, shall we say, extensive.

And they weren't as dumb.

It was Ash who override Ridley and opened the airlock for the away team. Without sabotage, half the ship survives.

In Prometheus, the smartest character flees along the long axis of a falling wheel of cheese.

Lambert just standing around screaming getting in the way of Parker.  Gee could someone just move her out of the way?   Ripley also wastes a lot of time trying to fix the coolant.

The problem with Prometheus isn't only the ephemera of the actions taken by the crew. The whole totaltity of the script in its tone and themes are all over the place.

Like, what was Prometheus even about anyways? Is this a science expedition gone wrong? Is it about trying to meet God gone wrong? Is it about a robot going wrong? Is it this hubris of man plot? Or is it some sort of Man desires immortality? Or favored son vs unfavored daughter? Is the alien evil? Or the Prometheans? Or Weyland?

The whole thing is a MESS. It's completely tonally and thematically dissonant. It's setting up beats that are not paid off and presenting others like they were. When I watch it I get a profound sense of bewilderment at everyone's motivations, top to bottom, across species.

Like John Wick's assassin run world economy is completely unrealistic, but it is internally consistent and is presented glamorously and lavishly evoking the correct tone of a exotic underworld.

Nothing in Prometheus meshes well and it doesn't just boil down to "biologist gets close to a snek." It is much more structurally deeper than that.

Thank you. The biggest, dumbest thing in Alien was pure malice and sabotage by the evil robot. Period. The other stuff was space truckers w/o any weapons fighting the "perfect organism."

They still cooked up a couple of reasonable plans. They just underestimated a foe with a biologically implausible lifecycle.

Prometheus was a hot mess of a movie.  And Damon Lindelof is a bad person who should feel bad for foisting that dreck upon us.

You got one more shot at this, Ridley. First thing you have to do is right the wrong that hack inflicted upon you.

Lindelof is a hack, but he wrote the script that Scott wanted. You can't just blame it on Lindelof without also blaming Scott.
