What did anyone expect?

Even blue lives only matter if they're white.

"Am I free to go?" is also a valid question for former police chiefs.

Unless asking that question gets him a return trip to Paris.

Can't blame 'em really. With a name like Hassan, you know he's gonna chop something. If those Bugs Bunny cartoons taught me anything about Ay-rab culture, it's Hassan chop.

My favorite part was how he asked if he was being detained and was told "no" but that he couldn't leave nor use a phone. OK. Well, I guess the US government now has a very unique definition of detention?

Nonrepeating Rotating Binary: Is their management doing nothing about this crap?

Encouraging it maybe? I'll be honest, I have a pretty dim view of anyone who goes into law enforcement. It's one of those occupations we obviously need, but I assume it attracts a disproportionate number of authoritarian types.

I have a good friend named Hussein whose family came from Lebanon. He was born and raised near Dearborn, MI and is as American as they come.

But he has a well deserved fear of police, immigration, and the government. Last time he came Seattle, a group of us scheduled a trip to the Boeing factory tour to see the 787's, but he declined the invitation because he "didn't need the bullshiat that would undoubtedly follow" the trip.

Now maybe he's just insane and is imagining these slights, but it's not a terribly uncommon viewpoint among ethnic minorities that they don't truly have the freedoms, especially the freedom FROM harassment, that white Americans do.

Thank God for ICE protecting our freedoms and drawing attention to this threat.

So if someone starts going by the name "John Smith" and they are on the watchlist, we should start detaining every John Smith for 1-2 hours without cause?

Isn't this pretty much 100% what has happened to tons of people since the no-fly list went into effect? If your first name is Mohammed and you have a common Arab last name, I imagine you go through this song and dance all the time.

If I remember correctly, it even happened with some folks of Irish descent because the original list included any known or suspected "terrorist," thus pulling in a bunch of IRA folks.

On the other hand, how many people in the world share the same name? How do you clear that up when you are Mohammed. M. Mohammed, along with 50 thousand other Arabs, one of of those Mohammeds is a known exploder.

The rule in Greenville for years has been, "don't be stupid in public."  The cops mostly concentrate on drunk drivers and underage kids being loud and obnoxious.

/may or may not have first-hand experience with drugs and police in G-vegas

Well if he was being detained that would've violated his constitutional rights.  Can't do that now, it's called "alternative freedom."  He wasn't detained, he had full freedom to sit there.

Don't let these fake news stories distract you from the real facts.  Obama wiretapped him.

"I was confined to a chair with no access to my phone, but they had the nerve to tell me I wasn't being detained."

Then as a cop, he should know that's when you get out of the chair and leave. The second they told me I wasn't being detained, I'd walk on out and toss a "Smell ya later" over my shoulder.

No doubt, but this doesn't appear to be that situation.  They illegally detained him based off of his name.  Despite cops and regular citizens having the capability to do something illegal, you can't detain them over nothing.  It's part of the constitution.
