Do people just not understand how perspective works, or were they just that bad at trigonometry?

He's lucky that none of the many, MANY aircraft he's flown in over the years ever fell off the edge of the earth.

So what exactly is the positive for having a flat earth vs a round one?

I really don't get the rationale for convincing yourself the earth is flat. At least 9/11/Sandy Hook/Aurora truthers blaming the gov't can be explained by their severe, irrational distrust of the gov't. Climate Change deniers are in it for the money.

But there's no money to be made denying the earth is round. There's no gov't involvement in the earth being round. What possible reason is there to say to yourself "I just don't think the earth is round because I drive in a straight line from California to Florida."?

You know that feeling of superiority you get when you're all "Aha! I'm right and you're wrong!"? That's a positive; the conspiracy itself doesn't matter

Funny. Tyson himself explains why it matters in the post above you ...

Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving was the first NBA player to reveal his flat-Earth beliefs, summarized as such: "Can you really think of us rotating around the sun, and all planets align, rotating in specific dates, being perpendicular with what's going on with these 'planets' and stuff like this?"

Yes.

Him personally?  Not important, sure.  But the fact that absolutely ANYBODY at all believes that is evidence that we're failing bigly in education.  Bigly.  That or he's just trolling.

The thing I don't get, is that a million dollars can buy you a pretty sweet telescope with change to spare. You can take that telescope, and actually view other objects in the sky that are in fact round. Is this part of the conspiracy? Is the sky fake? Why would we be different?

The earth is flat.

We are in a computer simulation. Our data is stored inside chips, which are not, I repeat, NOT curved like a ball.

It only appears to us that the earth is round because the holy programmer Sir Jon made it that way.

Y'all soon will be a member of Matrixism, for it is too good to pass up.

Yeah, but I wanted to counter the whole "It's a flat circle " argument before it got made. Rings give it 3D perspective.

This is just an example of someone who isn't very bright who also doesn't have the ability to realize he isn't very bright.

Some of them are literalist religious kooks who read the vague, poetic language in the bible and see it as absolute fact.  They're the ones who say that if they found a passage in the bible stating 2+2=5, they would accept that as fact without question.

The rest are just stoner morons and trolls who like to get people riled up over pointless nonsense.

My biggest problem with flat earthers is they all say that the truth has been finally revealed to them because scientists, NASA, etc. don't know what they're talking about, but refuse to consider that their source for this secret flat-earth "knowledge" is full of shiat as well.   Actually, this is the biggest problem I have with all sorts of conspiracy types, from 9/11 truthers to tea-party conservatives.

Now with your average basement dwelling flat earther, he could give up and say "everyone is lying to us."

If you're a multimillionaire, you have other resources that would let you prove your theory. Go to flight school for a bit and learn navigation. Then charter a plane. Sit in the cockpit and tell the pilot to start flying straight - perhaps north. Carefully watch the instruments to make sure the pilot isn't in on the conspiracy.   See where that takes you. Livestream it.

Sure it may be expensive, but imagine the accolades you would get by documenting the edges of the world.
