For me, it's two of my favorite Valley favorites.

TreeFort, which is led by a former associate from the Iron Horse Entertainment Group, Paul Hansbury, and was in fact, a conspiracy to get Paul's songs recorded, by another local hero for the Indie music scene Matt Hebert. Paul has a unique sound, to say the least, but his songs are absolutely knock down, drag out good. I mean, stoopidly good. Girls Allowed is his only album. And it's frippin' brilliant. And in the Happy Valley, their rare stage shows are always mobbed, and damn near everyone there has every last line memorized. His songs are deep Americana, and funny, and vulnerable, touching and sometimes more than a little sad. Much like Paul himself.

In my car, if you can't sing TreeFort lyrics from memory, you probably soon will be able to, because Paul is in my rotation a LOT. Seriously, if you get a chance to peruse Girls Allowed, buy the disc, and then feed it into your player and let tales of reclaiming a House from neglect, or let your heart break a little while he recounts being Your Best Friend, and bringing an apple for your horse.

My second is a LOT more prolific, and one of the BEST song writers in the Happy Valley. Period. Full stop. And the Happy Valley has a LOT of singer songwriters. Mark Schwaber has been a force in the Valley for inspiring and working with Indie artists for a generation, even when he was just a record monkey in Westfield just out of high school. Mark has played with Lou Barlow, he formed a band with Lou's sister Abbey. He's done the punk thing. He's done the Americana thing. He's done the "Let's just see if we can trash asshole promoters gigs and STILL get paid for it" thing. He's settled into a ferociously deep and incisive songwriter, and a supporter of folks coming up, who are in the current rotation, and been background as set musician for a LOT of albums, as well as headlining more than a couple of great bands. He just released a new album, White Flood, which is available right now for digital download, straight from Mark himself from Bandcamp.com. His previous Two Years and Thirty Minutes is one of my favorite albums. Period. Full stop. Moody, atmospheric at times, always with a little tongue in cheek, but with a LOT of heart and emotion, Mark is one of those songwriters who can go from screaming into a mic to something amazingly intimate and personal at the drop of a hat. His guitar work is tight, and embracing, and rises up to just envelop the listener, and it's the kind of music that you listen to a LOT when you have to drive alone. He's that kind of intimate a cat. He's not a guilty pleasure, but you often find yourself connecting to songs in your own way, and sometimes that takes a little to share him. Mark is that kind of songwriter.

Both Paul and Mark are brilliant cats. Very much different sorts of songwriters and their performances are NOTHING really alike, but the rawness of emotion that you get from both of their songs, it's more than a little bit of a trip. Both are a part of the bedrock of the Indie scene in NoHo, and they got that way by being that good at crafting songs. Not just playing them, but writing songs so good that folks memorize them long before seeing them live.

If you get a chance, give Girls Allowed a spin, and for damn certain try to pick up Two Years and Thirty Minutes, because they're amazing albums.

Oh man, I've got every album the Unheralded Favorite(s) ever released, including the ultra rare Knob Hill studio recordings that were only put out in windup music box format and distributed to 2.5 college stations in Paraguay. I was into them way before they were cool, subby.

I've seen him a couple of times with Aimee Mann. Not bad at all. My underrated genius suggestions are Doug Sahm, Alejandro Escovedo and Los TexManiacs

They're starting to heat up, thanks to the release of their first full length album last month and a lot of touring prior, but I just love turning people onto these young bucks from St. Paul called Hippo Campus.

They're a pop sugar 3-layer Vampire Weekend cake, with The Temper Trap filling and Shins frosting. They'd probably hate all three comparisons for obvious reasons, but somehow it works. It's just great listening while driving around the lake with the windows down on a Sunday morning music.
