It's not like regular Americans are going to get a tax cut because we're not funding a bunch of sh*t anymore. In a way, having to donate to keep stuff like Meals on Wheels going is in effect a tax increase.

I've already seen this fact being paraded around on social media as proof that the government doesn't need to fund social services.

"Look how much money they made once the government got out of the picture!"

In the words of Peter Griffin it really grinds my gears.

If the Federal government stops funding things and the states have to do it all themselves, then why do we even need...or want...a Federal government at All?

Maybe we could use this method to fund defense spending.  Cancel the F-35 and set up a Go Fund Me account.

Government is us.

We were already paying for meals on wheels. This is just individuals upping the money they already paid for that service.

We HAVE to get over this mentality that somehow our government is separate from us. We choose them. We pay them. We fund them. It's not the government that pays meals on wheels. It's us.

Meals on Wheels is just one of many programs that submit grant requests for CDBGs.  There is no guarantee they get funded every year because the grants point system penalizes winning year after year.

All of the Trump/Ryan domestic proposals are indirect tax increases for the middle
class being sold as freedom increasers or free market solutions.  From health care to infrastructure, to funding environmental cleanup.  So there will be a massive financial gap in "the system" that will lead to tremendous damage to our country.  See Kansas and Oaklahoma for further details.

In a tangential way this reminds me of when my college stopped funding the school's radio station.  The station was very successful and, honestly, the school's funding was a very minor source of funding.  Ads brought it like 98% of our money.  But you would have thought someone killed babbies when that tiny bit of funding was cut.

Attention Snowflakes, instead of complaining on the internet about how some big mean orange guy is cutting funding to your new found favorite charity, why not get out of your chair, and volunteer at your local Meals on Wheels group? I am sure they would love the help. If you can not volunteer, why not send them money? Instead of spending $50 at the bar, why not donate it to MOW? They can use it more then you anyways right? It is a worth while charity that you think is the best thing on earth. What, you don't care about seniors enough to give up on your binge drinking? How about drugs? Stop buying your weed and donate that money to Meals on Wheels or downgrade you cell phone plan. See, you can donate and save your new favorite charity........

Except that the government was not formed to help the poor, or anyone

That is best part of freedom, you choose to be poor or wealthy here

You want to help the poor? Go ahead, no one is stopping you from volunteering or donating money to a local charity.

But forcing a lower middle class person through taxation to help the poor is theft and wrong on many levels

Force is not freedom

You are absolutely right. I also think that it's wrong to force middle class people to fund a gigantic military that only benefits the super wealthy and weekly million dollar golf trips for our billionaire president. So, yes, let's set up a Go Fund Me so people who want to pay for the president's golf trips can do so voluntarily.

So's providing for the general welfare. But if you want, apply that mentality to Trump's weekly vacations to Mara Lago and his wife's residence in a gilded penthouse in Trump Tower.

It's not sustainable. People can't keep donating to every worthy cause they take funds from, as much as they'd like to. When people are outraged by it, the donations will briefly surge, but long term? We're going to have to keep everything we have to try to sustain ourselves.

I'm still living in fear of not being able to afford my doctor, therapist, and medication... and nobody is going to donate to me.

So my tax dollars go to it every year and help pay for it...but trumpee wants to derail that and use the funds to vacation or throw more money to defense contractor buddies. Instead of spending my hard earned money that I get to keep after taxes, I am supposed to give more money to where my taxes were meant to go, because trumpee is a tard? Yeah that's not how this works. But typical thought logic for conservatives to pile everything on the middle class.

Somewhere some gun makers are in tears. Obama was their best salesman. Now Trump is inspiring people to donate to causes (ACLU, PP), subscribe to dailies, and who knows what else by the time this year is up.

With that said, I don't understand people who will defend Trump at all costs. Dude, sit some threads out. Don't be that guy who tells people not to buy an iPhone and get insurance instead. You end up sounding like an idiot.

Came here to say this.  People forget.  People get busy.  People get overwhelmed by the massive number of problems that require constant attention and funding.  It's way way simpler to have a steady source of money from the govt, and let people worry about their own life problems instead of all the problems in the world.

It's sad how common it has become to see fundraising campaigns just to keep ordinary people alive.  Not even rare diseases.  It's everyday common things that could happen to anyone.
