I think Eno would have written it this way if he could have.  Microsoft just didn't want a 20 minute long startup song.

/"An Ending (Ascent)" might be the single most beautiful piece of music ever

800% slower?   Like 700% faster, but backwards?

For people who understand numbers and words "800% slower" probably means 1/8 of the original speed.

That was 300% less sarcastic than my explanation.

That was probably the second time I let that sound play on any machine I used, at least so that I heard it. The slow version doesn't annoy me.

Ironic given the fact that on the first versions of Windows 95 his intro music was on.

I had a coworker that thought he was god's gift to Windows support.  I recorded a ten minute long, completely empty sound file and set it as his startup sound.

It drove him INSANE when he couldn't figure out why his machine took SO long to boot up.

That really doesn't prove anything though. Just because strange sabotage didn't cross his mind while troubleshooting doesn't mean he was bad at troubleshooting. Only that he assumed you weren't farking with him.

I've always been partial to changing the keyboard layout to Dvorak.

Sounds like the intro theme for an unmade Star Trek series.

And the Cocteau Twins.

Windows XP startup sound played at 0% volume brings infinitely more enjoyment. Just saying.

There was an old desktop toy for 3.1 and 3.11 called 'Icon Fright' where the icons all run away from your mouse cursor. That one was good for a laugh.

Heh. I had a screen saver that used the actual BSOD and startup screen bits, so it looked like my PC was crashing and rebooting indefinitely.

CSB: I once got a Cocteau Twins 12" single and when I played it at home, thought it sounded a bit like whale song. THEN I saw the "45 RPM" on the sleeve - I just assumed it was 33 1/3 like all other 12" records and had been playing it back too slow.

/OK, not much of a story
//but it has Cocteau Twins and playback slowing so at least it's on topic

I played it at a speed of zero, infinitely slowed, and found it immeasurably pleasurable.

Somewhat fitting since this video is about as old as Windows XP.
