Fallout 4 (still)

MechWarrior Online (still)

And I was gifted a copy of Defense Grid 2. I didn't know it was out and loved the first one, so I'm playing through that.

I'm getting ready to start my yearly sojourn through Oblivion as well. I've never done a straight Mage before so I think I'll give that a shot.

And Jon/Many A True Nerd is by FAR my favorite youtuber.

The depth of his knowledge of Fallout New Vegas is staggering.

Tabletop: I made progress on the GREL supplement for Heavy Gear D6, I like how it's coming together.
Console: while I'm waiting for Mass Effect: Andromeda like a lot of other people, I've been on a bit of a nostalgia kick and have been hammering away again at Ace Combat 6. I'd forgotten what a pain the Agaion and Chandelier missions were.

Just finished up a full paragon replay of all 3 Mass Effect games including all the added-story DLCs.  Playing World's Dawn now while I wait for ME: Andromeda to be released.

Favorite video game YouTuber in general is a tossup between Kilian Experience and Carbot.  I don't really get into Let's Play videos, but if I had to pick someone for actually playing the game and not just reviewing or satirizing, it would be Dawn Somewhere's "Let's Ramble Over..." series with Greg/fimflamphilosophy.

Got and beat Ghost 1.0 this week.  Excellent metroidvania.  After getting to Braccus Rex and deciding that me and Divinity: Original Sin are officially done.  Professionally.  I'm really in the mood for a good turn based tactical rpg, but all of the classics kind of aren't appealing right now.  Not sure what direction to go looking.  I want a lot of fun and crunchy combat, but with the ability to eventually deliver ludicrous gibs through ridiculous builds.  Divinty's chain CC and Status effects or die to anything your level shiat pissed me off even before Braccus "did we forget to mention to stockpile resist gear?  Because you should have been doing that" Rex.  Maybe I'll play through the Geneforge pentology again.  Those were at least different and fun and you could do some pretty cool stuff end game.

Pretty much just play JRPGs these days.

Doing Fire Emblem: Birthright now. Just finished Dragon Quest 7.

Farking hate games that try to make you pay extra for  additional content after your initial purchase.

Fark the entire Freemium concept in the ear while yer at it.

I've actually been doing a survival mode play-through of No Man's Sky. No, the game isn't really significantly better; still light years wide but millimeters deep, because you really can't have depth with procedural generation. So, it's not great, or even good. But somewhat adequate and addictive.

The achievement junkie in me wants to scratch off the few additional achievements they added.

Tabletop: After finishing the Pathfinder Adventure Path Iron Gods a few weeks ago, my group started a previous path, Jade Regent, last weekend.  After 18 months of playing with only 4 people, it's weird to have a large group again.  IG was 3 PCs with cohorts plus the GM.  For JR we've picked up 3 more players and the GM is running a full PC.  No cohorts needed this time out.

oWoD Sabbat LARP this coming Sunday (OWbN). Last weekend was Werewolf, also OWbN.

D&D next Friday. DM wanted to move from 4th to 5th ed., and last Friday was character conversion. I still prefer 3E/3.5 (yeah, Pathfinder, I heard you, but I already own all the books for the D&D).

Other than that, Minecraft. Started fairly recently. Finally found a jungle to get some jungle saplings and cocoa seeds. Not worried about taming ocelots at the moment.

The thing I love about Pathfinder is that since it's almost all published under the OGL, everything you need to build a character or run a homebrew game is available for free online.  Paizo runs their own online resource, and you can also find pretty much everything at d20pfsrd.com or archivesofnethys.com.  After the dumpster fire that was late 3.5 (the Complete books and Book of Nine Swords), I welcome a product that receives regular balance errata when they realize they done farked up and made stuff that was way too overpowered.  WotC's solution to the power creep was to scrap the whole thing and release 4th Ed instead.  Paizo continues to refine.

Yeah, 3.5 was sort of sh*t. I prefer to define my campaigns as 3.25ish. Basically I tell my players that we're playing 3E, but if they desperately want to incorporate any 3.5 stuff like rangers that are bow specialists instead of dual-wielders, just let me know and it should be fine.

There's enough good content that was published under the 3.5 label that I hate to discard it entirely.

Overall I run my campaigns along the lines of "The rules will apply for the sake of common reference until I say they don't for the sake of story. Deal with it and focus on the narrative."

A few of the best games I've ever played in were run like this.  Played a 3.0 game under these terms, then many years later we played another game in the same verse but in 4th, wherein I played the teenage daughter of my character from the original game.  Nominally set in Shannara, with D&D rules, a lot of reflavor and handwaving and "that sounds fun, let's run with it".  I miss that game.

I'm not a huge fan of 4th. I started way back on the red book. Then AD&D. When 3E came out, and I flipped through the PHB, what I really appreciated was that it still felt like D&D. It was also really interesting to see how they had adapted various concepts to the new rule set. I think a really good example is Stoneskin. Instead of 2d4 hits you ignore you get DR up to a certain threshold. Makes a lot of sense. One of the really stupid things 3.5 did was make DR either magic or epic (or stuff like silver, etc.). It made a lot more sense when dragons had a strict social hierarchy based on "you can't hurt me with those equivalent +2 claws, young dragon, better respect your elder with my +4 or better DR".

You could still customize your characters in 3E. Want to run a campaign focused on a thieves' guild? Sure, you can have a second-story man, a safe-cracker, a sneak-thief, etc., all specialized with the skill system.

Want to have an NPC illusionist who only focuses on spells that can entertain and delight? You can do that in 3E.

4th moved away from all of that. It was like an MMORPG on paper.

Only having been very briefly exposed to 5th ed. so far, I can see some promise, but I keep feeling like it's a step from 4th back towards 3E, and at that point, why not just play 3E? Ignoring stuff like Pathfinder, obviously.

At the end of the day, if I'm playing in a campaign someone else is running, I just try to go along with the rules and RP the best I can. The RP is why I'm doing it ultimately.

2017-03-17 02:34:13 AM
I agree with that assessment of 4th.  We switched to it because of the previously mentioned power creep in 3.5.  At the time, Pathfinder was just starting to be released so there was almost no depth of customization.  By the time we got to the Shannara game pt 2, 4th had a little bit more fluff but it was still not ideal by any means.  Combats with a large group could take entire sessions, leaving little room for RP.  Hence why we played fast and loose with the rules.  The other 4th game I played was run by someone much more focused on "these are the rules" so it was significantly less fun, but we stuck it out until the end because the AP was interesting for a while.  That game (Paizo's Rise of the RunelordsAP) had started in 3.5 but got ported to 4th after we laid waste to an encounter that was never meant to be defeated.  The Black Magga encounter in RotR was really intended as a hazard to be dealt with while trying to save the inhabitants of a town from a flood.  Not supposed to be killed.  Our debuffer wizard took her dex down to 0 and we coup de grace'd her to death in short order.  We took the next week off and the week after that the DM insisted that we convert to 4th or start considering a new game instead.

Been slowly working through SC2 Legacy of the Void.  Got kicked in all the feelings after the second campaign mission (actually stopped and shed a tear).

A couple games against the AI in AoE 3.  Always good to get a couple seconds ahead of the AI into Age 2 and start getting cavalry in shipments (Germans).

I may start up a game of Civ V again, see what nations I still don't have wins as, but this weekend would be nothing but Pokemon GO (finished the NA dex 3 hours ago when Dragonair finally found candy 100) and some games against the AI in Race for the Galaxy.

Been playing Diablo 3 seasons, but that's over tonight.  Also, if you have Playstation Plus, get Disc Jam.  It's free, and it's a lot of fun.  I'll throw down with anyone.

Also, my Horizon: Zero Dawn copy shipped from Gamefly, so I'll be playing that next week.

UNC_Samurai's Weekly RPG Group:  Fallout Texas edition

Here's the campaign Pip-Boy Map. Warning: It's a 25MB image.

Last night we revisited my Fallout campaign, rejoined in the wake of the massive three-way battle of The Pass.  The party agreed to help clear rubble in the settlements from the recent fight, which included combing though the ruins of old El Paso (clap-clap-clap-clap-clap).  In the process, they uncovered a pre-war museum with an intact steam locomotive.

img.fark.net
El Paso & Southwestern RR No. 1

If you've been following my posts for a while, this campaign is playing around with vehicles being viable in the Wasteland given enough effort to repair and maintain.  It started with motorcycles, then the party restored a rail line between two settlements and even crafted a makeshift engine and stuck it on a flatcar.  Once the party uncovered the relic, Doc rounded up a few mechanics and they started laying track to move Old Number One out of the ruins and down to The Big River where they found an old ironworks facility still staffed by a couple of robots.  It's going to take them a while, but they eventually will have a working engine (I'm not sure how the PCs plan to power it yet).

The main quest for last night's adventure was a search-and-rescue mission.  A squad of Rangers were sent across the River to establish a forward observation post for at "The Big X" (If you remember from last time, the Fort Bliss Rangers and The Pass Militia maintain a few batteries of artillery on the Franklin Mountains, to fend off Legion and super-mutant attacks).  The squad never reported in.

img.fark.net
X does NOT mark the spot when it comes to firing for effect!

After combing the area around the tower, they found a couple of the Rangers still barely alive.   To the party's horror, super-mutants had dragged off a couple members of the squad.  They followed the trail to old downtown Juarez, finding a large warband of super-mutants gathering around the cathedral.  Two Rangers were in cages hanging from the ceiling, a third was about to be dunked in a giant vat of FEV.
The party sprang into action, blew the front doors off the cathedral with dynamite, and Sweet P the deathclaw charged the mutant overlord.  The overlord pulled out its missile launcher.  Sweet P decided it wanted the greenskin's shiny toy, and wrestled it away from the overlord.

At this point, I had one of the most entertaining conversations ever with my players.
"What does Sweet P want to do with the launcher?"
(Ellen, the bounty hunter is standing about ten feet away from the now-heavily-armed deathclaw)  "Sweet P!  No!  It says, DO NOT PRESS!"
(Sweet P's player)  "Sweet P knows a couple of English words.  It says, Donut Press!  Sweet P knows donuts are delicious, so it presses the button."

img.fark.net
I wanna push the button!  Building go down the hole!

Sweet P and Ellen had to burn all their bennies soaking wounds.  Miraculously, the Ranger who almost got dunked in the FEV was blown clear and only suffered a few broken bones.  The two Rangers dangling in cages from the rafters were bounced around.  The cages broke loose, but managed to land on the balcony and the prisoners didn't take too much fall damage.

Meanwhile, Doc had climbed up onto the balcony to snipe at the greenskins.
img.fark.net
It took him a moment to clear the ringing from inside his skull.

So Sweet P was down, Ellen the bounty hunter went down from a brute swinging a super sledge, and Doc was mawping.  This left Jimmy the Synth, Wheels the Cursed NPC driver, and the one conscious Ranger who had escaped from her cage to revive the party.  After a few stimpacks, they managed to get everyone headed out the back door...
...only to see about 50-60 super mutants converging on the cathedral plaza from multiple directions. Doc decides to get desperate.  He drops a flare he borrowed from the Ranger outpost at The Big X.  And they start hoofing it like there's no tomorrow.  As the party is running for the border, artillery from the north comes screaming in on the horde of greenskins in the plaza.
They eventually make their way back to the Fort and the safety of the Ranger infirmary.  The party managed to save all but one of the surviving Rangers.  As a token of gratitude, the deputy commander of the Rangers gave the PCs a set of T-45 power armor.  It's going to be fun seeing who fights to use it.
Next week, we return to East Texas University and finals week.

Got back into World of Warcraft because the SO was looking for something to play together. Raiding and farming, basically.
As for let's players, I watch too many... Markiplier, Jerma, Star, Northernlion, GassyMexican.
My favorite is Freelance Astronauts, but they've stopped playing together recently because of jobs and such.

Nothing but Horizon Zero Dawn and Oxygen Not Included this week.

Youtube is usually whatever my son likes: Stampylongnose, iBallisticsquid, DanTDM, PopularMMOs, a few other (mostly British) Minecraft lets-players, and Markiplier.

I "finished" Breath of the Wild last night. Well, I beat the boss anyway. Probably going to play some more of that.

I've also got about 5 hours left in the Andromeda Trial, after hitting the lockout point last night, so I'll probably explore a bit more and do some sidequests, and maybe try out the MP.

Otherwise I got Nier to try out today, Dead Rising 4 on Steam, and I really should get back to Horizon after having been sidetracked by Zelda for two weeks.

2017-03-17 09:12:35 AM
I started GTA5 over again, but only play it sporadically.

Picked up No Man's Sky last night again for about 2 hours, after not playing it since before the first major update. Kinda frustrated by not being able to mine things I could before due to changes in how the weapons work, but eh. It's still nice to explore.

Still haven't finished VA-11 Hall-A yet. I wish there was an Android version.
Started Hitman Go on Android and got my fiance hooked on it too. Quality game, that.

More Fallout 4 settlement building, with my latest work being in Somerville Place. Screenshots updated again. Need to get back to the Starlight Drive-In; with all of that space I need to build a clinic, a pub and at least one other establishment. I am also really hoping to catch sight of one of my battery of turrets unloading on an entire squad of raiders/gunners/rust devils/etc again because the last time that it happened I only managed to catch the tail end of it (a sizeable patrol of Rust Devils was wiped out in seconds).

Also putting in some more time in the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild, when time permits.

I have been catching up on Final Fantasy XIV, running the main story (have not even begun Heavensward).

I played a bit of Warhammer: The End Times: Vermintide last night with some friends.

I also may get back to Final Fantasy Restored, a fan-made retranslation and bugfix patch for the NES Final Fantasy. I would offer a link but romhacking.net is down until the owner can get his server rebuilt and that may take a lot of time (in the off chance that anyone has an interest in obtaining the .ips patches for it, EIP).

I am not much for watching Let's Plays. I do often put up console game longplays as background noise when I am at work and many of those are done by Valis77. I would occasionally look at Deceased Crab's work but I have not seen anything that he has put up in some time (my last viewings were of his La Mulana remake run).

Has anyone played AM2R? I have an interest in trying it out sometime.

Started playing Resident Evil 7 and holy crap that game is legitimately terrifying!

CSB: I work on a sea going vessel, so I decided to save Resident Evil 7 for playing on my off-shift time. Not going into spoiler territory, but there are some pretty good jump scares during the intro of the game. One of them ended up happening at the exact moment that the vessel I am on started conducting power blackout recovery tests and all power to the vessel was lost. It was bad enough that I nearly soiled myself, but the worst is that the blackout shut down all aircon systems which makes the vessel eerily quiet, so everyone I work with was able to hear my girly scream with startling clarity.

/end CSB

I've been trying to get into Torment but the size is just so daunting. It took me 2 hours to get through talking to everyone in the first decent sized area. Given my typical gaming time, that means I might be done with it by fall.

Zelda, trying to decide if I should buy Binding of Isaac for the Switch since I've already blown hundreds of hours on the pc version, and maybe a break for SNES Animaniacs.

I'm travelling over the next week so it will be Switch on the go for me.  Thinking of selling my 2DS.  Kind of bummed that once I remove my profile from it, the digital games get wiped too.  Maybe Switch will have an upgrade option for previous eshop purchases eventually.

Currently unlocking the entire map in Zelda.  That game is freaking huge!  Still trying to find the Korok Forest without looking online.  I think I have about 4 towers to find.

Not too much on the video game side of things (Waiting on the Skill Tree PTS for Mechwarrior Online).

But tabletop? Oh man. I'm in a 5e group that is currently chasing after the human trafficking, sister murdering, cold hearted (and cold focused), worshipper of Tiamat, Anadora Baneschild (We're stuck in the general Faerun setting because it's a multigroup storyline and two of the DMs insisted that it be set there. The other four didn't really care).

We're got a half elf noblewoman Bard, a human Cleric of the god of knowledge, a half elf Sorc that now has a feather beard (Thanks wild magic), a dwarf Ranger/Barbarian, an elf Monk who is a de-leveled ancient elven warrior (And the Bard's father, but she thinks he's her butler), and me as the halfling Rogue.

We may or may not have accidentally released the first of five aspects of the Avatar of Tiamat because we couldn't help but touch the shiny.

Anybody have any they like?  Preferably pretty casual, PVP or PVE is fine.  I don't have SE, but am willing to pick it up on sale if I need to.  I was on CJ's for a while and it was great, but I don't think it runs anymore does it?

In other news, I'm about done with my FF7 playthrough.  I'm going to go after Emerald and Ruby, since I've never beaten either.  I just finished picking up Final Attack and W-Summon, and have two master magics and a master command.  I'm rolling with Cloud/Yuffie/Vincent (trying to use characters I haven't in the past) and everyone is about level 85, so I think I'm about there

Also, I've been considering Fast RMX for Switch.  I used to be a big fan of F-Zero before GX kicked my ass.  Any opinions?

Played Pandemic Iberia last night. We lost but it`s a fun game. Interestingly the game mechanics seem to make the game harder the more players you have. Also, unlike regular Pandemic, researching a disease doesn`t  cure it or even reduce it`s spread in any way. Still fun though.

Gems of War for about 20 minutes a day after waking up before the coffee applies it's daily buff.

XCom 2 - Long War 2 mod pretty much every other minute of the day.  Getting close to finishing up my second campaign - I had to drop down to rookie just to insure I lived long enough to experience most of the game mechanics because it's annoying as hell to find out 30 hours in that you lost because you assumed long war meant "take your time"....  add-on mods include Gotcha, Perfect Information, Evacall, True Concealment and some minor cosmetic stuff.
