Fark the haters.

Loved IF as a kid. It was one of my favorite comics and I have been waiting all my life for this series. I don't care if it isn't perfect. I just want it to be good enough to watch. I'm already a little miffed that they have altered the origin story into a plane crash thingy but I'll get over it.

Plus now that we have the final Defender shiat is about to get real.

If it's even half as good as LC, JJ and DD I'll be satisfied.

In terms of the rating system I don't really use it.

A near 5 may make me marginally more interested in watching something that is on the bubble for me in terms of interest and a 1 star either means avoid or plunge on in in search of cheesy bad goodness.

I'm worried that it will feel like every trope that's been covered in Arrow.

I'm guessing that the harsh reviews have been not because it's bad per se, but because it isn't original enough.

Jessica Jones and Luke Cage both did amazing things in their own ways.

I think Krysten Ritter is a truly great actress, and I hope her career goes far. She deserves it. I remember the first time I saw her in Breaking Bad, the scene in the car, the way she delivered her lines and flicked her cigarette. F*cking amazing. She's like Uma Thurman, but with serious talent in place of hype.

The entire depiction near the end of Luke Cage with the rapping and all the guys walking around with the shot-up hoodies was f*cking amazing. I'm not sure how to describe it properly. Just f*cking outstanding in terms of story and social commentary.

All the acting, every single bit, in both series, was completely solid.

Daredevil had a couple of tiny scenes here and there that felt a little off, but it was still fantastic overall.

I honestly wish I could trust online reviews, but unfortunately most online critics can't comprehend anything being either Five Stars or One Star. There's no nuance. Either it's awesome or it sucks.

Even those who think it's just "meh" won't bother to explain why they think it's just "meh," so getting an informed opinion seems as though it's becoming increasingly more useless.

Yeah, I don't think people put a lot of stock in the star ratings. At most like stated above, if I'm unfamiliar with the piece it might get considered then.

The ONLY time I give the star ratings more than a flicker of thought is on stand up comedy specials for a comic I'm not familiar with. Don't know them and it has 4 or 5 stars? I'll give it a shot.

Sid_6.7:Daredevil had a couple of tiny scenes here and there that felt a little off, but it was still fantastic overall.

I tried watching Daredevil when it came out, I couldn't even get through one episode.  So bloody, so brutal.  I think I turned it off at the part with a guy getting his head slammed in a car door repeatedly.  I couldn't call that entertainment.

I think that made it clear that I wasn't going to enjoy that show, and I avoided the rest of the Netflix Marvel series accordingly after that.

Netflix in Australia hasn't had the star rating for a while, it has been thumb up/down with a % likelihood you will be interested in it.

Actually the star system works well for me. I thought they were going to some kind of full review, rotten tomato thing.

More ratings != better ratings

Since tastes aren't binary, this system is useless.

2017-03-17 08:28:48 AM
I like it just to have a quick reference of movies I watched in a year and what I liked at the time. Also during those times as mentioned above with stand up comedy or if I am on the fence about it. A thumbs up and down also would work for me.

I used the rating system on a few occasions to find good shows (Peaky Blinders), but it's not always perfect for me. I hated Bloodlines which was highly rated. I am indifferent on the change because I rarely rated shows.

Imdb dumps message boards. Netflix dumps stars. I get that there was abuse on the imdb boards but not all the time. Basically no one wants feedback anymore.

Pretty sure that didn't happen in episode one.

I made it a few episodes in and it was just too slow. And they call all that brutality "realism". Maybe it's more "realistic" to take 10 minutes to beat up 4 guys in a hallway but halfway through most fights I was wondering when they'd be done. The pacing is just awful.

Netflix is replacing stars with a thumbs-up / thumbs-down system similar to Rotten Tomatoes because their studies show that triples feedback given.

Maybe it wasn't episode one, I don't really care and it doesn't really matter.  I just remember sitting down to try it one day for a little while, not really liking it and then seeing that scene and thinking "Yeah, that's it, I'm done."

My experience has mirrored yours.  Netflix said Bronson would be two stars for me.  Since I liked Tom Hardy, I took a risk.

FIVE STARS.  Absolutely brilliant and a must for Tom Hardy fans.

Eh, I don't much care what other people like. I like (at least I thought I did) the stuff it thought I would like based on my previous ratings. I understand taking cues from what's popular, but the binary system seems like a solution looking for a problem.

2017-03-17 09:17:39 AM
I'm fine with dumping the star system.  I've hated stuff that's been four or five stars, and enjoyed things that were one or two.

The thing I'd like to see Netflix update is their categorization tagging system.  If I'm browsing for something to watch, I'll see the same titles over and over in different categories, and I see a lot of things in categories that don't really fit.  I'll see things listed in comedy, for example, that maybe have a couple of funny moments, but aren't comedies and don't belong there, but they're also in drama, and action/adventure.  And when I'm browsing, I often have a genre that I'm looking for, but the way it currently works, it's hard to tell if a given movie actually belongs in the genre in which it is listed.

I can't wait to get into IF. I've enjoyed all the other Netflix shows and I'm certain this will prove to be enjoyable. I, for one, have no problem with the slower pacing of some of the shows. I like that the story has room to breathe. It works a lot more than it doesn't.

I'm not only excited for this series, I can't wait for The Defenders.

Not sure what the critics are talking about #IronFist is very good so far!

Welp, I'm sold.  Silvera was the stunt coordinator for Daredevil S1 and the fight coordinator for Deadpool and the upcoming Punisher S1.  I'd heard the fights weren't awe-inspiring, but if he's in, then I'll at least give it a shot.

This.

Luke Cage / Iron Fist is sort of the original comics version of the Rush Hour style of stereotypical-black-meets-stereotypical-white (and/or stereotypical asian, which IF is a bit of a twofer for) comedy, whereas alone they're a generic blaxploitation comic and a mighty whitey comic that was mildly offensive even when it came out.

Buddy cop comedy > either series individually, in my opinion.  Not the most original thing in the universe in itself, but action-comedies and buddy-cop flicks aren't sold on originality, they're sold on the "Odd Couple, but with more punching" principle.  And that's awesome.

I'm about a third of the way through it so far, and while it's a bit clunky and boring in parts, for sure, it's not *as* bad as the reviews on RottenTomatoes make it out to be.

Sure the dialogue is pretty cringe-worthy in parts, and the action scenes don't compare to either of Daredevil's seasons, but it's a decent enough drama, for what it's worth. It is what it is.

I'd still be more inclined to rewatch it over Suicide Squad, in any case. Iron Fist definitely needs more, and way better, fight scenes though. I get the feeling they dropped the ball on this one. I'll still watch it 'til the end, though, just as I have all the other Marvel Netflix series.
