I love the original but, sequels are sequels.  I hope 3 decades and the sequel stigma don't keep a potential film from being made and made well.  I'd love to see James Earl Jones having abdicated the throne and Akeem raising the next king-to-be with his father hanging around the palace causing hijinks.

And with good reason. Murphy's never been anything but a cynical ambitious social climber from day one.

That movie traumatized me. Back in 1989, my family was taking a trip to Germany, Austria, and France. My dad was doing European delivery of a BMW, so we first were flying to Munich. We left from New Orleans to JFK no problem. Second flight was to Paris for a connection to Munich.  As we neared France, we found out that Orly was fogged in, so couldn't land there.  De Gualle was also out due to fog.  No suitable field in France was available, after circling Paris for over an hour, we were diverted to London. However, we were not permitted to disembark there.  Our flight was not cleared for the UK (pre EU).  So we sat on the tarmak at Heathrow for 8 hours. We ran out of food and drinks on the plane.  Bathrooms filled up. What did the crew do to entertain us, they replayed the in flight movie several times. It was Coming to America. I liked the movie when I saw it with friends at the movie theater.  I enjoyed seeing it again on the flight, before the delay at least.  I think they played it 6 times total. I watched it in French a couple times, although I don't speak it. Finally they refuel the plane enough to finish the flight to Paris. Got a brief window of visibility and were able to go.  We were supposed to arrive in Paris before 8:00 AM, but got in after 9:00 PM. Now we had to get new flight to Munich. Somehow we were able to get a flight and get to Munich. Cab driver didn't understand us and took us to the wrong hotel. It was 2:00 AM, but luckily wrong hotel had vacancy.  It just wasn't the fancy hotel BMW booked for us. Rest of the trip went well except for the skiing. Not a good year for snow in Austria. Lots of rocks exposed on the piste.

Now whenever I stumble across the movie on cable, I quickly change the channel.

I'm pretty sure the timing is "Eddie Murphy needs money and this is the best he can come up with for a payday, and since Hollywood loves existing IP, someone is willing to finance it before the cocaine wears off...... time".

Wow, I just realized that this was his last great movie - and that was 29 years ago. I'm more excited about going back and watching the original for the 50th time than I am about a sequel.

Coming to America and The Golden Child were probably Eddie's best movies.

However, I don't see how you make a sequel of it.  His wife dies, so he Comes to America Again?

I was a big Eddie Murphy fan back in the day and I hated The Golden Child. I just didn't think it was funny. Poorly paced, bad jokes. But tastes differ.

My favorites are 48 Hours, BHC1, and Trading Places. Coming to America was good, but too much Arsenio. Although the scene at the Jewish barbers' is an all-time classic.

Oh, and I think his last great live role was in Bowfinger.

I like both of those movies, but no. Not in a world where 48 hours, Trading Places, and BHC1 exist. And the Golden Child's effects REALLY didn't hold up.

Given today's political climate, the sequel will be called "Getting Kicked Out of America"

2017-03-17 08:40:17 AM
Given today's political climate, there is no way the sequel can be as funny as the original, per Hollywood catering to the thinnest-skinned, most easily offended a-holes out there.

/ I'd be more interested in a movie about Randy Watson.

How about he's in America, and gets deported because they didn't believe he's a king, and in middle of being deported, JFK gets attacked by terrorists. And Chuck Norris is the CBP agent guarding him, so they grab a couple mop handles and kill all the terrorists, and The Donald is so happy he lets Akeem bang Ivanka as thanks for saving the nation?

Um, the barbers (Hall, Murphy, and Clint Smith) were black - Saul was just a customer.

Fun fact - that's Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first movie role getting his hair cut. (NSFW language)

James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair were so perfect for the roles of the King and Queen of Zamunda that Disney cast them as the King and Queen in The Lion King.

No, but most the jokes do.  And Charles Dance is ALWAYS a great villain.

Wasn't he sued for stealing the plot of Coming to America from another writer? I think he used to be very funny, but I can't remember the last time I saw one of his new movies. His movies are frequently beneath his capabilities.

Chris Rock has said that Eddie has the best Barack Obama imitation he's ever seen. It's a shame he doesn't show this side of himself anymore.

I'd rank him in the top 3 of SNL.

Golden Child was awesome and Trading Places I can watch over and over.  Eddie just needs to play himself.  Barbershop scenes from CtA are classic Eddie.  Don't even give him a script.
