That's A LOT of Uber hate in that article.  Almost too much for me to take it seriously.  Is Uber really that poorly set up for the future?

I dunno, I'll keep using them (and Lyft) until they go away, as the article seems to think they will soon- which I have a hard time believing.

I'm just glad using a jitney in my city hasn't gone away. There are 5 other options, but I'll stick with what's cheaper and faster.

Its BoingBoing.  Objectivity and clue-fullness is not their thing.

Damn straight.
Don't get just one, though. And if you don't have AAA, you can even pay one for a jump. Very enterprising folks.

Most of the Uber hate is justified. The way that company is run is despicable. There's a reason they're getting sued left, right, and centre.

If  self-driving Google car was about to run over 5 people tied to a trolley track, but if the only other option was to not run over Cory Doctorow, what do you do? What do you do?

Well, part of the reason they're being sued is they still have money but are small enough to not have a fleet of lawyers in comparison to other companies.. If you think Uber is bad, don't forget Yahoo flat out killing so much stuff for so many workers (in particular female workers) while Mayer turned on her own privilege tap, as an example.

Forget about BoingBoing and read the original article. It contains a pretty compelling argument that someone from Waymo (Alphabet's self driving car division) took both the source code and the hardware designs with him as he founded a competing startup. That startup seemed to have a suspicious amount of self-funding, and was quickly acquired by Uber.

If these allegations are proven, there's a lot of red flags here. Stealing your employer's source code and design to launch a new startup isn't likely to play out well in courts, even in a state as employee friendly as California.

The "Uber hate" angle really has nothing to do with this, I'm sure Google/Alphabet would be suing regardless. As usual, BoingBoing is doing a disservice to their readers by conflating unrelated information.

So, according to TFA, Uber's business plan is to hemorrhage investor money subsidizing driver pay and low fares, so they can develop driverless cars.

Wouldn't it make way more sense to just develop driverless cars?

Basically group of Smarter-than-thou  tech darlings took a look at the highly regulated taxi cab industry and said, "well those law s and regulations are more like guidelines really, aren't they"  and then got rich enough from VC investors that most municipalities couldn't afford to try to enforce their laws against them. .  They got too cute by half when they started chest-bumping with the State of Ca's labor and motor vehicle laws, and tried to pull that shiat over in Europe, and are paying the price for it

Nope.   Driverless cars are still 5 years away, Uber needs its brand to become ubiquitous by then because their business model is highly copyable.  DC tech  finally gives them the advantage of a competitor needing a significant start-up cost and capital investment to compete.  At that point LYFT/GM has the advantage, but Uber  will hace to cash to remain a player, but only if they are making thier own not paying licensing fees to Google

Ford invested $1B recently in driverless tech startup Argo AI here in Pittsburgh. The company was 2 guys already in the field, one from Google and the other from Uber.

It seems like a lot of hate only because Uber is really in that bad of a position.
