Huh. Neat. Thanks for that. I never really paid attention to how much of that song is rooted in the '60s psychedelic sound when R.E.M. was doing it, but slow it down by 10% and mix the drums a little quieter and it's glaringly obvious.

I'm particularly impressed by covers that rebuild the original in significant ways. Most people here know that Manfred Mann's "Blinded By the Light" is a radical reworking of the Bruce Springsteen original -- among other things, it swaps the prominence of the chorus and verses.

There's also 3 Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come," which reshapes Randy Newman's original, especially giving the chorus a lot more oomph.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: /I don't recall ever hearing them do that one, but I didn't start going to their shows until much later in the 70s

yeah once Pigpen died, Hard to Handle was pretty much retired.  I haven't checked deadlists.org or any research, i just can't recall any HTH post-Pigpen.  I did see Furthur or perhaps "The Dead", whatever touring iteration post-Jerry, do it a few times.  they revived a bunch of old GD songs that had never been performed (i.e., The Eleven, Saitn Stephen, Caution, Alligator, etc.).

i caught them at Red Rocks one year and Chris Robinson came out as an unannounced guest.  they did Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and then "Hard To handle", predictably.  it was pretty awesome.

Much much better than the original.  McCartney's version has no edge.  Carly Simon put more grit and edge into The Spy Who Loved Me than McCartney did with his number.
