/ the raw data from their (very limited) linked study does little to change this perception

As I recall alcohol is a state-dependent learning drug, so if you want clear access to those memories, you need to drink on the witness stand.

One of the only psych lectures I can recall clearly was the one about state dependent learning, where the
professor illustrated it with the example of if you go out and get drunk the night before a big test you forgot
to study for, you're better off staying drunk and studying rather than getting sober, since you're more likely
to remember what you memorize drunk when you're drunk.

/Or something like that.  I only got a BA in psych...
