Frank Frazetta is awesome.

I sometimes get into heated arguments over his work with some MFA high art types.I know who consider him to be the lowest of the low pop artists and loathe him for his hyper-sexualized semi-nekkid women and men and his oft times lurid themes which they find to be unforgivably sexist and misogynistic.

I like that about him but then I used to subscribe to Heavy Metal or as Marion Zimmer Bradley was fond of calling it "Naked Girls with Wings Monthly" so what do I know?

The utter lack of pretense and unapologetic badassery speaks to me in a loud shouty voice.

Also thanks to Subby for introducing me to CBG19. She's kinda awesome too. Plus cute like a bunny's nose.

Woo Hoo. A legitimate thread to post a FF art pic. How could I not?

I've been watching CBG19 for years, and not just because she's easy on the eyes.  She's passionate about the arts (and the X-Men).

Like his Greek myth series?

As opposed to all the museum statues of Hercules, who just was an olde timey superhero?

It would be pretty easy to craft the metaphor for Frazetta's themes. They're pretty common themes, and his style is pretty iconic.

Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Frank, destined to draw the jeweled titties of Aquilonia with a quivering brow. It is I, Fano, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of heavy fapping!

I side with you.  Royo's work has stunning detail and often, somehow, a layer of beauty that is beyond the subject.

Closer to Frazetta's style, I've been a great admirer of Boris Vallejo.

There's a guy that owns a yoga studio near where I live that had a small Frazetta show one day that I went to.  Proceeds went to some Frazetta museum.  I'm not a real fan of the nearly-naked barbarian aesthetic, but dude drew some cool art.

I have to disagree there.  I really like Royo as well, but Frazetta's work just had a dynamic vibrancy that Royo's work alway seems tot lack.  Royo's subjects always seem to be consciously posing, while Frazetta's subjects always seemed en media res

OMG!! Frazetta thread!!

My father was a huge Frazetta/Conan fan and I inherited all his worn out Conan novels and a reprint of this painting that is currently hanging up in my garage:

Got a better example? I really dislike this painting. Something's crooked about her posture, or her clothes don't sit right or something. She's odd-looking.

I also don't like how indistinguishable the midground is from the background. I can appreciate a detailed piece, but I don't like spending so much time squinting at which made-up object is or isn't part of her armor (which distracts from the overall "story" Royo's trying to tell).

My dad had a Frazetta of a naked chick riding a mammoth or something on the stairs. I loved that thing as a kid, probably shaped my warped little mind I guess!

My mother never minded it either which speaks well of her heh.

I kinda go for that more though. It's as if they're posing for a painter. More like renaissance art (which resonates better with me as far as a fantasy theme goes).

Most welcome! :)

I have an older friend in southern WV that was an acquaintance of Frazetta in older days. He has, in his tumbledown cabin, a series of signed Frazetta pencils based on Kubla Khan.

By his account, Frazetta was a hard-knuckled, hard drinking, generous, all-around larger-than-life character.

Sorry if this is a double post--my internet is being difficult.

As an Official Art Historian, I can say that Frazetta is the greatest painter of movement to ever live. Not Michelangelo, not Caravaggio, not Kandinsky, but Frazetta.

What's to argue about? Yeah, he was a cheezy, low-art commercial illustrator. But he was farking good at it. Norman Rockwell is not to be sniffed at, either.

So the way I look at it is that each of these artists excels at a particular character class/race.

Frank is really good at brutes (muscles, action, masculinity). The worlds he paints are tougher, mightier, bloodier. He's usually on the red end of the spectrum.

But sometimes he does blue.

Luis is more about battle mages (shadows, beauty, femininity). The worlds he paints are more about mystery and magic. He's usually on the blue/black end of the spectrum.

Does anyone remember the old animated movie he did called "Fire and Ice"? I remember seeing it as a kid and I loved it, but I am wary of hunting down a copy to see if it holds up. Sometimes things are best left to nostalgia.
