Why not just a shotgun?

Anyone who ever had bats in the country knows about web shot, or whatever they call it. It's based off the same idea that ship cannons used to rip sails - balls connected by chains and fired out of a cannon.

This isn't a new idea, it's probably just more efficient.

Net shot is nice. It definitely works here on Earth.

But space debris is a huge problem. Net shot won't fix the problem, but something like large sheets of orbital Silly Putty might be a way to capture deadly space trash and drop into the atmosphere to be burned up.

KarmicDisaster: Why not just a shotgun?

Came to say this. Not to mention they literally have something called bird shot, I don't doubt it'll take down drones too. It's not like they're going to be armored or anything.

Thirded. Is there some reason we need to keep them intact?

the officer in charge of America's nuclear deterrent continued. "It's not enough for me to tell our guys to take a shotgun and shoot down something."

Why the fark not?

These crazy $5 fixes? How are we going to pump billions into weapons contractors with $5 fixes?

Because you can buy whole cases of bird shot for the price of a single one of these shells.  Are you mad?  That would be cost effective.  This is the government we are talking about!

I'd like to see a net fire a shotgun, that would be quite interesting.

And effective range. Most shotgun rounds are ineffective over 200 ft, their looking for something that can hit a target that fly's up to 1200ft of elevation.

According to my friends in the CHP, they have been outfitted with a similar system.

I'm kind of surprised barrage balloons and barrage nets haven't made a comeback as a drone deterrent. It's a simple enough concept, putting up tethered balloons with nets strung between them.

The general's brother-in-law makes the contraption in his basement, so they will award him a $20 Million contract for 5 prototypes.

Because the military already owns shotguns, and can buy the for a reasonable price off the shelf.  This is America, we need an overly complicated solution that will not work as well, require the carrying of heavy special equipment that can not be used for anything else, and costs a lot so that our defense lobbyist can purchase larger homes.
