You see, you stiff upper lip, stick up the butt officials. It's likely no one would have even bothered to report on this if the thing wasn't named Boaty McBoatface.

The whole 'Noun'-y Mc'Noun'Face coinage was a trend that utterly deserved to die.

Dead for Tax Reasons: subby mcsubface?

Is a sub considered a boat ? Or is this one of those "is a hotdog a sandwich" kind of questions ?

Roy Scheider's character referred to SeaQuest as a boat. If you can't trust a fictional character from a 90's scifi tv show who can you trust?

Subs are traditionally "boats".

Goes back to the days when they really were boat-sized.

We could call it a kind of "undersea boat", or Unterseeboot if you prefer German.

SOON...

I still think that they should have made the name of the research vessel "RRS Boaty McBoatface" as the people demanded. I don't think even Sir David Attenborough (for whom the ship ended up being named) would have minded at all. Science doesn't have to and should not be all stiff-upper-lip SRS BSNS no fun all the time. Most of the marine biologists, oceanographers, and other marine researchers I follow on Twitter supported the name, and they are the types of people who would actually do research on such a ship.

That said, I get that they were throwing a bone to fans of the name, but it doesn't make sense to call this AUV a boat. Isn't being able to have people on board one of the key things about an object being a boat?

More like Boaty McDreamsOfBeingARealBoatface. :p ;)
