I suspect he is using this to attempt to leapfrog the more establish clerics that are working with the US, and is counting on support from Tehran if he gets anything going. That being said, all Shiites are going to have some.relation with Iran but not Al-Qaeda.

Trying to draw a moral equivalence between the two overlooks the fact that while the extremely rare occurance of a school shooting or hate-lynching is motivated by warped individual values, what happened to that poor kid from Pennsylvania was motivated by pure political gain and a lust for power. There is a huge difference between a disturbed individual and an entirely evil, driven organization.
