Further proof that Columbus, OH can make anything boring.

I hear that's not the only thing in Columbus that will go 'Down In 12 Seconds'!
Am I right???

/never been to ohio.

They have buildings in Ohio?

Wow.

2004-05-09 05:07:00 PM
Did they check the roof for children first?

2004-05-09 05:08:31 PM
Actually, it was a building explosion. Implosion is a very specific scientific phenomena. The Explosives go boom, and building falls inwards, sending minor debris outwards... Just because it falls inwards doesn't make the explosion an implosion.

I watched it come down in my rear view, pretty cool stuff.

The mayor asked for a blow job. They missunderstood.

What's the over-under for the amount of time it'll take for the clip to surface in a cliche heavy metal music video? Six months?

2004-05-09 05:59:33 PM
looks like terrorist struck ohio.... damn there goes another building.

2004-05-09 06:07:50 PM
Actually, the implosion was pretty sweet. I sing at the Cathedral downtown, and before going to mass, my family and I went over to the area and watched it. My Mom was screaming "fark yeah! yay! fark yeah! that's farkin awesome! happy farkin' mother's day!"... my mom is 4'11" and she's screaming this at firefighters... we were all crackin' up.

2004-05-09 06:09:47 PM
inio how did you do that?

2004-05-09 06:14:05 PM
Woo, they just added a couple of crash cam videos (from like 50 feet away or something like that)

2004-05-09 06:35:59 PM
HellToupee:

1. used curl to grab all the slide show pages with the image urls
2. used grep to extract the lines with the links, redirecting that to another file
3. used BBEdit Lite's regexp find/replace to strip out just the image urls
4. manually added "-o 0.jpg" before each image urls
5. used curl again to grab the image files
6. in column view (so that they opened in-order), opened all the files in Photoshop CS
7. used PhotoMerge to align the images (with Keep Layers checked)
8. tweaked image positioning for a few frames it didn't align right (also deleted frame 14 at this point (duplicate of 13)
9. cropped the output down the there weren't any empty borders
10. moved to ImageReady CS
11. Set up 14 frames, one for each layer, and set one layer to be visible on each frame. set the delay of the first and last frame to 0.5s, and the others to 0.2s
12. played around with size, color depth, and lossyness until I got it under 100k
13. saved it out, put it on my server, and linked it up (output scaled up using height and width attributes in img tag).

That answer your question?

2004-05-09 06:51:52 PM
er, "-o 0.jpg" should have been "-o <image number>.jpg""

2004-05-09 07:05:24 PM
Wow, I was skating down by OSU today, and had no idea this was going on.

/Michigan sucks, that's why no one lives there except for Detroit

2004-05-09 07:32:46 PM
son of a biatch...I farking missed it. I didn't even know they were planning it and I would have driven downtown if I did.

Would be funny if people didn't know it was going on and saw it. Bet 911 would be flooded with slackjawed yokels going "them Al-k-duh went 'n blew up that thur buildin"

2004-05-09 08:35:02 PM
for God's sake:

Today's.............brought to you by......

IS NOT FUNNY, IT SUCKS AS A CLICHE.

It also makes no sense, as it was usually attributed to sensational news stories that always get press, even though they happen all the time.

Like a food truck tipping over on the interstate, an old lady losing her money to a scammer, an article about how this is going to be the "summer of sharks", etc.

2004-05-09 08:53:07 PM
inio, you crazy.

2004-05-09 09:06:05 PM
I don't actually care about this, but I wanted to make some sort of statement which insinuates that I live in Columbus, Ohio. You know, because we all like knowing.

2004-05-09 09:24:53 PM
"The best part was when the buildings fell down!"

/eat my shorts

2004-05-09 10:16:35 PM
wow, I was born in that building. Haven't seen it in a while seeing as how I am in Oklahoma now though.

2004-05-09 11:25:35 PM
Today's boring lazy headline writing brought to you by whoever submitted this article.

2004-05-10 01:20:20 AM
Someone who knew this was planned should have phoned in a bomb threat to the police a couple of minutes before the building was destroyed. That would have rocked!!!

2004-05-10 03:25:40 AM
why stop there? half the buildings downtown need to be asploded anyway.

2004-05-10 03:43:37 AM
Did anyone else click on the video footage from the news chopper? If you do, there is a link to an interview with the "Wedding dress guy from E-bay" without his face blurred. Kinda amusing.

2004-05-10 08:41:44 AM
Just like some things are not ironic, this is definitely NOT IMPLOSION (maybe we need a tag for it, too :D)

Collapsing a building with explosives is not an implosion. An implosion is a very specific scientific phenomenon. The collapsing of a building with explosives is the collapsing of a building with explosives. The explosives explode, and the building collapses inwardly. That is not an implosion. It is an inward collapsing of a building, following a series of smaller explosions designed to make it collapse inwardly. Period.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.

I absolutely despise the misuse of "implosion". I got pissed off enough that I actually called the switchboard at Channel 4 on Saturday when they were doing their ramp-up coverage. The chimp on the other end didn't have any clue what I was on about.

2004-05-10 02:49:51 PM
Holy crap, I'm that close to being Carlin? :P

Just got too much Carlin in my brain now, hard to sort out the original stuff and the Carlin stuff

2004-05-10 03:39:42 PM
Thank god we have a hundred people a day teaching us all how to use "ironic" and "implode" properly.

I hate George Carlin almost as much as the people who parrot his lines.
