"It's a show of force, and I think it is intended in part to intimidate, and that's worrisome from the U.S. and Taiwan's point of view because we don't know how much more they are going to ratchet up these pressures and tensions," said Bonnie S. Glaser

With the transition as far along as it is having gone on as long as it has, it probably falls to Trump to come up with the response to a situation ...that he catalyzed the day after he was first elected.

Yeah, I'm sure swift, decisive action is due Any. Minute. (*yawn*) Now.

They have the exact same sort of crazy the Japanese did in WW2.

And those losses live long in the collective military memory of the US Armed Forces.

Cleans up a few million unwed and under employed young men and puts them where they can't cause trouble.

Sell about 20,000,000 extra "made in China" Taiwanese flags worldwide.

No one really dies but a few millitary specialists in naval combat zones.

Probably some downsides that far outweigh those fringe benefits, but there's always silver linings.

So a Gynese fighter pilot decides to buzz a destroyer. Trump goes ballistic, demands it shot down. Gyna pilot was just doing what fighter pilots do to show off that wang isn't just their last name. Trump going full retard sharts the shooting war.

Provoking a trade war with whom you have a huge trade deficit benefits America how, exactly?

You Trumpkins are so friggin near-sighted, you don't even realize that China is an important regional partner in many respects. It helps keep North Korea in check, acts as a pause between India and Pakistan, serves as a bulwark against Russian expansionism in Asia, wields a UNSC veto and competes directly with the entire region thus keeping prices of stuff the U.S. imports lower.

Nope, you'd rather just flash your new tiny orange penis and pretend that America is still a superpower in any non-nuclear sense.

There are 2 importing nations on the planet right now and they're the UK and the US.  And post-Brexit, the UK is questionable...

Mr. Graham said it was important to see how the Liaoning conducted its passage. If it had aircraft on deck and was conducting flight operations, that would be seen as more provocative than if it passed through the strait with the aircraft in its hangar bay, he said.

Well? Do we know the answer yet?

Nope, it's the logical extension of various economic identities and the German economic policies.  Heck, Mark Blyth does good work talking about this in some of his talks.

/Though I might edit that to say that there's 2 serious exporting nations.  If Lebanon runs a current account deficit, no one cares.  If America's short half a trillion every year, that matters.

They don't need to provoke a full war. They just need to make the US think twice about sending its carrier groups into the area, then intimidate Taiwan into falling in line.  They're clearly gearing up for a fourth Taiwan Strait crisis.

What really matters, I suppose, is that numbers like these:

In May 2010, a survey of the Okinawan people conducted by the Mainichi Shimbun and the Ryukyu shimpo, found that 71% of Okinawans surveyed thought that the presence of Marines on Okinawa was not necessary (15% said it was necessary.). Asked what they thought about 62% of United States Forces Japan bases (exclusive use) being concentrated in Okinawa, 50% said that the number should be reduced, 41% said that the bases should be removed. Asked about the US-Japan security treaty, 55% said it should be changed to a peace treaty, 14% said it should be abolished

...are probably going to start to drop noticeably.

China is our regional partner.  Are you joking me?

Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and some others in SE Asia (to varying extent) are our true partners.

It doesn't mean we need to engage in a trade war with them, but fark China.  They're not our friends by any means.  They still need our markets and we can negotiate with them on that basis.  I don't agree with Trump on much but on China?  Even a broken clock is right twice a day

They already plunged after Fukushima.

The JSDF ran a bunch of (100% real, but totes) propaganda videos showing JSDF and US involvement in the aftermath.  Including one video of radioactive snow/rain(?) falling on the USS Ronald Reagan even as rescue supplies were taking off.

Combine that with the China moves, and the JSDF has never been more popular and the Okinawa base is there to stay (even if it's literally in the middle of downtown and should probably get moved to elsewhere on Okinawa at some point).
