Other notable releases:

UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #16 - the 25th anniversary of Squirrel Girl, if you are into that sort of thing

JUSTICE LEAGUE/POWER RANGERS #1 - pretty self-explanatory concept.

LOBSTER JOHNSON, GARDEN OF BONES #1 - "When an undead hit man goes after the NYPD, the Lobster steps in to figure out if it's a zombie-or something worse."    okaaaay

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: FROST GIANT'S FURY #1 - Minsc and Boo return for more butt-kicking for justice!

NINJAK #23 - British super-spy/ninja faces off with bald, white-guy voodoo priest in The Seven Blades of Master Darque part 1.  Great title.

In any case... is Miles a cake eater? Gwen is certainly college-aged and Miles is apparently a freshman in high school? also, doesn't this reinforce the idea that black men are horndogs for white women?

Miles is still in high school?  I assumed the dorm he is currently living in with Ganke and Goldballs was a college of some kind.

So we're going to have this thread weekly on the Discussion tab now. We'll schedule it for say noon every wednesday to go live. If you all want, I can put the dasbatsy video in the second comment after Big Bean Burrito intro. The idea behind the Discussion tab is to get all of our recurring threads in one place and build a viewable schedule so more people will know when to tune in for special interest threads and live threads.

Anyway, it's new book day so I gotta get back to it. Here's dasbatsyvid

Hey dugitman,

Do you have a website for the dasbatsy videos that would serve as the weekly link for the comics thread?  I hate to just link to a giant list, the IGN site kind of sucks, and Paste is an annoying slideshow that can't be deslided.

She was doing a weekly page for Nuvo(the weekly arts rag in Indianapolis) but they ran out of money and quit paying her. She's just posting up the videos on youtube and facebook for our store now, but thats just on our youtube channel and facebook page. We can work something out with a list or whatever. Our website downtowncomics.com may be an option, but there will be people complaining about Plug, free advertising etc. Neither Drew nor I care about doing it, but people get weirdly wound up about it for some reason, and start yelling at us in email and in farkback. --shrug--

Let me know in the forum thread and we can work it out.

Is there any particular reason a discussion thread needs to be tied to an article?  It seems like if we're going to just have a giant tab for just comments without bothering with the link at all you might as well link to fark.com.

Actually that is exactly the way it is done in TF Discussion on the paid side. However, without a linked subject to keep the thread focused, the conversation meanders, and eventually all threads devolve into discussions about food and/or sex acts. On the mainpage side(and in the new TF Advice tab) we're trying to keep threads subject oriented, rather than the gonzo threads TFD is known for. So if you're interested in that type of thing, TF Discussion is for you.

But I mean, no one is clicking the article for the comics thread, or the AoS/Flarroverse/Wrestling/Football/etc threads.  And seeing the discussion in here has sort of brought up what to link to if not IGN every week, linking to an article doesn't seem to fix the situation you're discussing =P

Thoughts on Marvel sending free copies of low-selling comics in order to boost their marketshare... and the removal of the digital codes from their books? (giving you a code to an unrelated older comic does not count)

In here we're trying to figure out a good, entertaining comics link for weekly use. We used to link to  dasbatsy's video blog, but for this week's purposes, I just embedded a youtube version of her rack-walking. In theory, linking to an organized concise list of new releases with maybe a mini-preview of some would be cool.

In the Live discussion threads you mentioned-- yeah, there's not much reason for a linked article necessarily, but some people do click on them, and it looks better to have multiple logos in the link type than a wall of FARK logos over there.

I like the free copies to promote the title, but they're counting on shops actively promoting the program and I'm not sure how much follow-through they'll get from a lot of shop owners.

The bar-code thing is annoying. I've said from the beginning that if they want to keep the print versions viable, there is no reason to not include the digital version in the purchase price. Without getting in the weeds, 5 or so years ago I submitted a rough outline of a system to incorporate both digital and print versions into a single subscription plan that would be administered by brick and mortar shops through their POS system(the Diamond pos only). I got blank stares from pretty much every angle. That was when Comixology was rolling out as the big player though, so it may have interfered with distribution agreements already in place.

The discussion tab is... weird. I'm probably missing something obvious but I thought every link was up for 'discussion' via the comments. Oh well, I'll figure out how this place works after another decade or so.

Professional (and skilled amateur) comics nerds:

Got a suggestion for the current best story line for Superman? Yes, I know superman is lame. And I've actually read quite a few indie graphic novels and loved the shiat out of them and will read many more. But I'm old. I grew up reading superman books in the 70's (and I checked out Red Son and a few others over the last fifteen years or so) and lately I have been pining to see what he's up to and I'd like to support my local shop in Seattle and buy actual paper books. I did read a few new 52 (aquaman and maybe justice league) last year but other than that I'm completely out of the loop. Where would you suggest I go for a current run of boring, lame-ass superman books?

Yeah, but you pay for the shipping on those as well, right? Also, you might champion a book as much as you can but what's the point in getting 30 free copies of Mosaic #3 to match your order of Mosaic #1 when your order of Mosaic #1 only sold 5 issues.

OK is anyone else really disappointed in Civil War two's ending. Kind of anticlimactic considering all that lead up to it including both Bruce and Rhodey dying. Having Tony in a stasis type setup with his conciousness uploaded to the cloud just seemed kind of repetitive after him losing all of his intelligence after the first civil war and dark reign.

I wonder how much the bar code is to prevent people from selling the digital copies online.  Give an older issue, which generally drops to 99c on comixology after a few weeks, and it cuts away peoples chances at breaking even while losing a purchase.

That's likely a concern for smaller stores because of a potential extra box with UPS shipping costs. We get our books on a skid through freight, so it's the difference between 736 and 738 pounds. I guess hadnt really thought about it.

Dinobot: Also, you might champion a book as much as you can but what's the point in getting 30 free copies of Mosaic #3 to match your order of Mosaic #1 when your order of Mosaic #1 only sold 5 issues

This is true. I'll ask dasbatsy what the selection has been lately. She may be better at addressing that.

Yeah, the ending was really bland.  The entire story was pretty terrible, but they could have at least made the ending more exciting.  It looked like a preview issue of the next BIG CROSSOVER EVENTS!

Pass.

Dasbatsy used to pick 5 or so comics on the NUVO link.  I don't know how feasible it is to have something like that on the downtown comics site, but it would work for our purposes.

Without a better alternative, I'll just keep linking to IGN or Paste, or anythign else I can find.  It's such a non-issue, that its funny how long this thread has gone on.

I am digging the new Steve Rogers Captain America storyline so far especially him breeding a chitaruri queen to purge the earth of surplus population. I will be intrigued on how his plan to overthrow the red skull will coincide with the uncanny avengers storyline.

I didn't get to any of those yet, but what do you think of the current "year" of Injustice?

I feel like the story has fatally stalled.  I just don't like Harley enough to have the story be told entirely from her perspective, and yet, some of it is so good that I can't just quit the series.

I mean, they're clearly going to milk this train for all its worth until the second game comes out.  Probably don't want to lose the readers by having a year or so break between the end of year 5 and the start of whatever injustice 2 will be, so this is just filler.

I think this year has been great when focused on Harley's relationship with her gang, and begins failing when talking about pancake crew, and falls completely flat whenever Joker shows his stupid face.

I could read an ongoing series about Harley and her masked gang of Jerrys, Garys and Larrys.  Easily.
