I knew they were bullshiat when they tried to spin the narrative and make it seem like somehow taxpayers would be on the hook for this. They basically all but said the city was stealing from the south side to get this built. God forbid we create some job opportunities in the city and help bolster our image to tourists. Would have been neat to see this built in Chicago.

Those people pissed me off so much. It would have been great for the city, and a handful of out of touch assholes kept it from happening.

Ha ha, suck it Chicags.

Because LA doesn't have enough philanthropically-commissioned museums.  And the sad thing is, we don't even really care much about the museum.  I mean that's nice, but our real motivation was just to get more parking in the area for free.

I'm not going to whitelist the site, but are they letting him build it next to the Hollywood sign? Based on the locations he wanted in SF and Chicago, it sounds like he was shopping for someone who would say "this area is off limits... but not for you, Master Luke-- er, Mister Lucas."

Off limits in Chicago? You mean like a site where it might interfere with the ability of some yacht owner to park his RV? The site looked at in Chicago was only an issue in the minds of a few very rich boat owners.

If anything, the museum would have enhanced the waterfront area in Chicago.

No, Lucas was the problem, In both Chicago and the original San Francisco location he insisted that the museum had to be built on prime public park land.

Open green spaces in dense urban cities are finite. Once you build something on it it's gone forever. His plan to use public land on the Chicago waterfront and in the San Francisco Presidio is the equivalent to wanting to build in New York's Central Park.

In both cases he refused to consider other spaces in the city - specifically ones that would not result in the elimination of parks.

The only reason that San Francisco changed its tune recently is because Lucas finally agreed that the museum didn't have to be on prime real estate (the new proposed location was Treasure Island).

Good. Assholes.

This museum would have been in the already-huge existing tourist/visitor area along the lake.

We have fantastic neighborhood parks. The Friends should put their efforts to keep and improve THOSE parks and rec programs.

In Chicago the plan was to put it on an existing parking lot and add an extra 4 acres of green space.

There were a lot of other great locations in Chicago where the museum could have been built. Just because Lucas was giving the museum away, doesn't mean that Chicago needed to acquiesce to every one of his demands. Plus the design he picked for the building was really ugly.

I've seen this picture many times in the past month and this is the first time I've notice that the torch is missing. So they rendered all the main buildings instead of using an existing picture? Someone must have been padding their hours. . .

They probably rendered the whole area so they could do fly-by videos and such.

Once you notice the stadium, you start to realize how fake the whole thing is. Look at the school busses.

It costs nearly twenty bucks just to walk onto the site.  A drink is like five bucks, a bucket of popcorn is around ten.  Two hours later, everyone has to leave.  The only way to get back in is to buy another ticket for twenty bucks.

Putting the museum there would block converting the lot back to park space, and there are plans to replace the lot with a new modern parking structure on the other side of Lake Shore Dr.

Nobody wants that to be a parking lot forever.

And again, Lucas refused to consider any other location in Chicago. He pulled the same crap in San Francisco when he demanded that it be the Presidio.

Just because he's paying for the museum doesn't mean he has the right to act like Robert Moses.

The article is not really clear, but based on the below line, it sounds like $400 million of the $1 billion is for the endowment, and the remaining $600 million includes the building cost and the value of his art collection.

Lucas has said he will fund the project to the tune of about $1 billion, including building costs, his art and an endowment of at least $400 million.

The building looks huge, so I could see it costing $300 to $400 million. And I'm sure all of the earthquake building code rules will drive up the price.
