I'd think the point would have been driven home after the second time.

I second the fishy call. He is shot in the back of the head three times, and then three MORE times from at least two _other_ angles almost 90 degrees from the shots to the back of the head?

Either this was the weirdest accident ever, or somebody was doing their best to well, nail the guy.

WTF?!

How did he manage to shoot nails into hte back of his head?

Trial and error

------------------------

Agreed. Sounds to me like someone started shooting him in the back of the head, landing three nails before the guy could spin around, resulting in nails around the side of his head.

I think I figured out what happened. The first two times he shot himself, he just slipped. You can see that happening, right? The next three times he shot himself, he was trying to dig out the first two nails using the tip of the nail gun when it accidentally went off. Then, he decided to try to think of a better way to go about it. He likes to scratch his head when he's thinking, and he just happened to have the nail gun in his hand, so...

I think the lesson we've all learned today is, if your name is Isidro Mejia, do NOT become a construction worker.

First thing to do is ascertain whether he's left handed or not. All of the shots appear to come from the left.

The other thing is; you can't actually see where the nails are. The article says he slipped... If he's flailing and the gund going off, they could be coming from anywhere within about a two foot radius. I'm just saying this because it looks like at least one nail was deflected by the skull. It's less likely that a direct shot would deflect.

You can't really get that much from the xray tho...

If you were going to try and do someone in where whould you shoot them?

Shoot through the eyeball, that's the easiest (softest) way to the brain.. Bang, dead.
Of course that's not easy to do when the guy isn't unconscious.

The six nails to the back of his head was bad, but the six knives that fell up from the drawer and stuck in his back were worse.

*sounds off to me

Do you think Oswald fired all the shots into his head or did he have accomplices?

Next thing you know, we'll be hearing about the grassy knoll.

actually though, the eye sockets are closed by bone behind the soft jelly-ular part (post-orbital closure, found in all primates I believe). so while you may be right and it is still the softest, there is still skull there.

As the X-ray shows, a nail gun to the head, even into the brain, might not kill you. If you wanted to "do" someone with a nail gun, aim for the neck. The big pulsing things full of blood in particular. If the blood doesn't come pulsing out, pull the nail out.

In a lot of cases it's not the bullet that kills you, but the hole it leaves behind. When the nails still stuck in you, aint got no hole.

Well, I have only shot myself three times in the hand, once with a 16 penny nail through the ring finger, and twice with a trim nail gun. But shooting 10,000 nails a years, that's not bad odds....

CNN sez:

Mejia, 39, was atop an unfinished home when he fell from the roof onto a co-worker who was using the nail gun, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Mark Newlands said.

The two men tried to grab each other to keep from falling, but both tumbled to the ground. At some point, the nail gun discharged and drove the nails into Mejia's head.

"They're extremely powerful," Newlands said. "They've got to drive through three-quarter-inch plywood."

Quinonez said Mejia told authorities he remembered a "shock" to the back of his neck and little else before passing out.

I did a google search for "Isidro Mejia" and the top link contained yet another Isidro Mejia in the construction industry: (he's a few pics down)

Perhaps we should warn him? :)

I've ran my fair share of nail guns, both trim and framing.
There is mention in the article about the nail gun he was using having manual and fully automatic settings.
Tell me, under what circumstance would one use a automatic setting to slug 16 penny nails? All of the framing guns I've ever used require you to depress the "nose" of the gun firmly against the material being nailed and subsequently pulling the trigger to slam one home. In any such case the firing of the gun cause a recoil from the material which releases the "nose" safety mechanism. This makes it tough to Robin Hood a 16 pennies even if you wanted to.
Most likely the safety "nose" of the gun was broken/stuck and the worker slipped.. the gun would continually fire if the handle trigger remained pressed or wedged in such a way with the back of his head pop pop popping against the nose of the gun. Most probable is that he was working in a confined space, and got hung up or wedged with the gun in such a way as to tango with a framing gun.

Check out the first Google hit for Isidro Mejia. I quote,

"Isidro Mejia's career goals in the construction industry are simple. To be able to look back on a project and say "Wow, I did that.""
