they're upping the age limit to 34

Dang.

/turns 34 in July

why dont they just give people 72 hours to leave each city, check them on the way out and then flatten it, viola, problem solved. spend the 4 billion a month of rebuilding instead of destroying

I'm 27. If they want me, all they need to do is call.

It's about time they drafted us ladies. Then we could finally get the Equal Rights Amendment passed--That was the big stumbling block for it, you know.

They could try to draft me, but I've got asthma and bad knees--welcome to the Rear Echelon!!!

/Would probably get stuck on some DARPA chemical weapons program anyhow. No guns for me, damn. I like guns.

This would make a good movie. Hollywood, are you listening?

If I get drafted, do I go fight in Iraq, which is wrong, or do I refuse and leave the country or go to jail, which is also wrong?

No, you admit you're a pussy and register as a conscientious objector.

The US Military has no desire for draftees. Think about it. Would you rather go fight with someone who volunteered, trained hard and was both well lead and motivated? Or would you rather serve with someone who will spend his entire enlistment whining about what a raw deal they got?

There isn't a need for a draft and the only one who really wants one is Charlie Rangel who thinks it will create protesters.

i read that some people dodged the draft last time around by gaining or losing too much weight. would the american military draft a dangerously underweight american like myself? by "dangerously underweight american" i mean right in the target range most health officials in the world would agree is healthy.

2004-05-04 09:34:40 PM
Yea, I have to agree with , cnamon, I think there would be a huge increase in pregnancies and a run on banks as women ran to fertility clinics.

Bring the draft back, I bet it would also do wonders to help the obesity problem in the US.

I don't see what's so wrong with a draft. Really. Mandatory service for a few years when you get out of high school, and you get to keep your rifle when you leave (and you'll know how to properly handle owning it.)

I know there is a country out there that does this. Damned if I recall which (Finland? Something around that part of the globe.)

Fark the draft. They should send inmates instead. It would lower the prison population, and I bet those bastards would fight crazy.

Eventually at this rate the pool of volunteers will dry up.
All it will take is one big escalation or one day with 100 casualties and the public will be screaming for more troops.

GWB knows better than to start draft, that would swiftly end his term in the oval office. Too many lessons from Vietnam, even he did not learn them, there are still many in Congress that have.

They probably already have enough to impeach him, but wont do it because they dont want to impeach 2 in a row. Plus, it doesnt look all that great to the rest of the world.

I dont think the draft is that bad of an idea. Military service should be mandatory in some ways. But for the bullshiat wars we start and will be engaged in for the next decade, I can see why people are upset.

Speaking as a woman who has been in 7 yrs.
Absolutely. Woman shouls serve as much as men. The crap we put up, being too sensitive, we don't act like that in real life. We have been using it as a cop out. If you have a child, that is one thing. Single women, not pregnant, should be held to the same standard. I'm not saying we all shoot a weapon, but we can process data or do what else needs to be done. Women are using a huge cop out. Yes, being a woman makes you different, but not unable to serve. Drop the BS ladies, either you have the "cajones" to do it or you don't. I'm especially sick of seeing woman "I'd like to serve, but I'm just to delicate". NO, you are not.

Hmmm... Kethares, In Desert Storm back in 1991, the military expected to lose over 20,000 troops. Fortunately it didn't happen. The current force has a lot more depth than you think.

While every death is a tragedy we had many days in Vietnam, Korea and WWII with losses well in excess of 1000 per day. Current losses in Iraq are not unsustainable. Recruiting for the US Army is slightly above pre-war levels. For Marines its up. There is no shortage of Heroes in USA. (Male and Female)

see, thats what i dont understand. These suicide bombers think their gonna get (*insert ammount) of virgins for doing what they are doing.

But, it is a definite ammount, and a highly exhaustable resource. One could easily go through their supply in a few days. Then you are just stuck with regular woman, which you could get here in reality, but i suppose its a bit harder than blowing yourself up.

"No, you admit you're a pussy and register as a conscientious objector."

Oh, please.

You can't be against a particular war without being a pussy?

So I take it you have agreed with every war in the history of mankind? Or all of ours? Or do you just think we are automatically incapable of going to war unjustly?

2004-05-04 09:41:49 PM
You guys are a bunch of cowards if you refuse to fight for the Dear Leader. Our forces are vastly overstretched throughout the globe and we need fresh recruits now more than ever! How will we ever win these wars against global terrorism without conquering every nation on Earth?

2004-05-04 09:41:52 PM
I doubt their will be another draft anytime soon. Bush is smart enough to realize that unless we're at WWIII with a few major American cities having been nuked, the reinstatement of the draft, or mandatory service will cripple the Republican party for at least a decade.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist strikes, U.S. forces have fought and won two wars.

????

HAHAHAHA

For one, the US has not even declared war since 1941.

For another, If we "won" why are our soldiers still there getting killed every single day?

Yes, we dropped bombs, killed tens of thousands, spent billions, and achieved limited control of 2 countries. But we haven't "won" squat, unless "winning" is turning the entire world against us.

2004-05-04 09:42:46 PM
There's been talk of this in American papers for some time. We're a long, long way from a draft.

i know we have (or will shortly) 200,000 total troops in Iraq.
Apparently our army alone has about 500,000 people backed up by 800,000 army reservists

Total armed forces (active duty, guard, reserve) is a little less than 3 million. The problem is that half of that is guard and reserve, and we're unwilling to tap that very deep well very far for political reasons. That's about the long and the short of it.

as of the end of Feb. 2004....

we had 1,464,910 people in our armed forces.

That's active-duty.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist strikes, U.S. forces have fought and won two wars.

Okay so whats the need for a draft if we've won two wars? Oh wait we havent won shiat, thats right!

Yes, the Taliban still control Afghanistan, and Hussein is still in power in Iraq. Oh wait, war and occuption are two different things, that's right!

And the above already answers why we need a draft - we _don't_ need a draft, that's the whole farking point. Doesn't matter how many newspapers publish stories about it.

2004-05-04 09:43:21 PM
Thanks, but I'll take my US draft news from an American news source.

Omega Ohm, Soo Yoo

Thanks. Soo's is the one I was thinking about, though. During one of my arguments with a gun nut about how "all the guys in Switzerland have guns and they don't seem to have a problem" I felt it necessary to point out to him that it was because they'd all received several years of training with and respect for the bloody thing, as opposed to here where the qualifications are pretty much "can you sign here?" and "can you pay for it?"

/not going there, just sayin'

Yes, we've achieved "limited control" if you call controlling the majority of both countries limited. I guess Canada isn't really in "control" of its territory with those pesky indians taking up arms now and then, either?

so anyone wanna take some early bets that this draft ends up being permanent like how george wants the patriot act to be, and his tax cut. of course they wont mention its permanent at first, only after its been passed.

2004-05-04 09:44:58 PM
What is it with all this draft talk? Are the anti-draft liberals (*) hoping for a renewal of it so they can get people marching in the streets against the man?

The draft isn't coming back.
1. We don't want you.
2. You don't qualify to join us. We don't accept people who are drug users, too fat, too dumb, homosexual, conscientious objectors, alcoholics, or have a criminal background. Sorry.

-----
(*) The term anti-draft liberals is meant to be discriptive and not derogatory.
Anti-draft conservatives have different reasons to be against the draft. See 1&2 above.

You know what always got me about the flock of virgins? Sure its cool and all but figure you get there and you'll want to bang a few out real quick. Then you do the obvious combination plays, etc. Eventually you are down to just one or two left.

Now you have eternity to wait for. Do you save one for a really good or really bad day? Even so what constitutes a really good or bad day, seeing as its eternity, so there is always going to be a day that is going to be worse or better.

When you get down to one, do you know you just go through eternity knowing you have a virgin waiting, but never use her, or do you use her and then know your going to go eternity with no more virgins?

Its a hell of alot of preassure to deal with right after you die if you ask me.

"I say lets make the military our Mexican immigration program. Service guarantees citizenship."

I know in WWII, if Mexicans served in the US military they were guaranteed citizenship in the US if they wanted it.

Now it's...

"If a person has been a permanent resident or green card holder and has been serving, or has served, in the U.S. Military for three years or longer, s/he may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship. In addition, some of the other requirements for citizenship could be waived. Also, if one has fought for the U.S. during a period of active hostilities, such s/he may be able to file for citizenship directly without even having been a permanent resident of the U.S.! It is advisable to discuss these issues with an immigration attorney if you believe that you fall into one of these categories and could be eligible for expedited citizenship processing."

what you guys miss out on is that for every rifleman in the field, there has to be 6 guys behind him to supply his ass...

so i guess *thinks* 85% of our armed forces are in support roles?

2004-05-04 09:46:41 PM
Doesn't matter to me. I've already served in the US Navy. And... uh... waitaminute... my daughter is 21! Crap! I have a daughter that is old enough to be drafted!

Oh yeah. She already was old enough to be drafted. Nevermind.

hey everyone.. I have the solution!

Everyone go out, dump some garbage off a cliff, and get brought into court for littering! You'll have nothing to worry about then, though they might fingerprint you.
