In honour of my cousin and her wife and my office manager's daughter this is the only money I put into the salvation army's kettles.

The kettles are padlocked to the stands here.  Not impossible to steal, just more of a hassle.  They don't even give the key to the bell ringers.  There is no trust here, and videos like this is why.

I stuffed my yearly fiver in the red bucket on Black Friday. Seems like I should give them another.

/their thrift stores have always employed a diverse workforce around here

Wow, i have never seen a headline here that was as close as a 30 minute drive from me. Score of maybe $100 in pennies.....what a terrible human being.

Community service could be involved. goodwill is an option for those that have been unfortunate.

Probably stole the car too.

I don't think their workforce is a big sticking point. The fact that they deny aid to people based solely on their religious views or sexual orientation, is the main problem.

Couldn't happen to nicer bigots.

Why would community service be helping a religious institution? Whatever happened to separation of church and state.

$70,000 SUV? Whar Subby, whar?
Did the article change, or is the standard 'make sheit up' headline?

Goodwill isn't religious, that would be OK, but the religious restrictions the Salvation Army puts on who it helps should prohibit them from getting free government labor.

I know that here in AUSTIN TX the punishment for community service could allow you to work for goodwill. some choose pet facilities. I'm just sayin. never been in that position thankfully.

BTW ..goodwill isn't preachy. you don't walk in one and feel less because you're not Christian. I am atheist and I think they do good stuff

Depends, did they give the kettle to a charity that isn't so destructive instead?

A classic case of the black calling the kettle hers.

CSB - A few years ago I was helping to serve the homeless. We were set up in a parking lot of an abandoned store.  That same day the local university was having a "day of service" event.  About 20 kids show up in the area driving BMWs, Jeep Cherokees, other high end vehicles.  They start painting a building across the lot. I am being generous about them painting as about 4-5 kids were actually working and the rest were standing around looking at their phones.

About an hour after we set up and were serving a woman who was overseeing the group comes over and asks for 20 plates of food to go. I ask her who it is for and she says the kids doing the painting (they had been working for about an hour and were hungry).  I was like "you're kidding right?" I said that this food was for people in need.  Told here to head down the street and grab some $1 McD burgers.  She left in a huff.

How else is she going to drive to the market to use her SNAP card to get lobster and steak?

Kangaroo_Ralph: How else is she going to drive to the market to use her SNAP card to get lobster and steak?

I have, on more than one occasion, seen people using SNAP that are way more well off than you and I(and I don't even know you, so that's telling.) Is everyone doing it? No. Is the vast majority? Not even close. But much like the cop hate that flows from Fark because of the random idiots that break the law in this country, there are enough that it casts doubts on the system.

Now, don't even get me started on the amount of money spent of candy, pop, and chips. That is a real issue this country refuses to face.
