TV is a privilege, not a right.

so does anyone want to give me a good reason for not moving to Oregon and stabbing someone? cause thats one 7" i'd actually love to go to prison over

So it's incredibly obvious that none of you have been to prison and/or jail. It is definitly a far cry from being a "free ride" as most everything is paid for by the inmate at ridiculously high prices. Ever paid $1.50 for a pack of ramen noodles on the outside?

You make a world where Jesus AND American Idol are number one and you biatch about the consequences. MANY innocent people - peeps w/o highspeedDSL, Rich Relatives, or the requisite Melanine Count are languishing and you crab about the crappy programming you actually pay for? STFU! You are ignorant sheep.

So....you're suggesting moral, law-abiding citizens need to censor what they watch because some people can't handle it? That's brilliant....were your parents at the forefront of the book-burning movement?

"I've worked for it. I've stayed clear of any sort of nonsense in the institution," said Krahmer, 27, who is serving 70 months at Oregon State Correctional Institution for assault with a knife.

No, you didn't 'work for it.' That is one of the most rediculous things I've read in awhile. You don't work for things in prison, just like you don't assault people with knives. You go to prison to be punished! Not to have every want waited hand and foot for you at the taxpayers' expense!

Yeah....but what about the 7" you'd be getting on the other end?

I was pissed about this, thinking "Why the hell do they get a flat screen TV? I can't even afford to get a flat screen TV!"
Then I actually read the article. Knowing they actually had to work for it, save up the money and behave themselves to get it made me feel better. Hell, I could get a flat screen TV if I wanted to work for it. But I don't.

2004-05-02 11:46:26 PM
Either I read the article wrong or everyone else did.

The prisoners bought these 7" flat screen tvs with their own money and as a perk for good behavior.

I have no problem with a prisoner using his own money to buy a flat-screen since he has been a good inmate. Also considering it's money going back into the economy, which is always good.

I have a friend who is a police-lady.

She told me about a guy she ketp arresting.

He'd walk in, hand a note to the cashier that said "This is a Robbery", and then would sit down quietly waiting for the police.

He WANTED to go to jail because it provided shelter and food - something he couldn't get on his own.

It happens in real life.

Don't think it doesn't.

yes: working harder than you ever have, for less money than you've ever been paid.

Spending a night in the clink and being in prison are two way different things. (I was in jail once and, well, yeah, I had a blast (helps to have been really drunk in a cell with other drunks) but again, that wasn't prison.)

If prison were so wonderful, I'm certain the guy from three threads ago would be a bit annoyed at being released after 20 years.

Yes, but he doesn't have to pay living expenses (civilians pay for that).
You do. So, if you took away all of your living expenses, you'd have enough money for that, because that's all you'd have to 'work' for.

Most of these people need to be "humanized" (if that's even possible for most of them), not dehumanized further. I don't know if a television is the right, or best, way to make them feel "human", but deprivation certainly is not.

I'm not a shill....I don't even watch any current TV, and I rarely recommend anything to anyone. Can't someone take a position on a subject without having a stake in it?

You Conservative "don't give them shiat" blowhards need to grab a breath. Firstlym, I would like to point out that prison populations are largely THE POOR, so dont sweat the 300 TV. Secondly, if you aversive control bush dildo freaks are so hot and bothered to stop these folks (who we see every month killing some young girl after being released) from being criminals, w4y not give them the TV programming that makes us Americans?

majorhopper: way to categorize and stereotype your entire opposition. I'm not farking Rush Limbaugh, I'm a moderate, liberal on some issues and conservative on others. I don't think my tax dollars should be going towards providing entertainment to folks who don't deserve it, when I can't even afford cable myself. And I hate and detest Bush.

Jail is not a fun place.

SpinStopper: yeah, that's kind of the point of it. Jail would be kind of pointless if it were fun, no?

Lock yourself in your bathroom for 48 hours, making sure you have a couple of books, even a radio or TV. Bring some munchies. Hell, bring whatever you want so long as it is not booze, drugs, or cigarettes. You cannot leave for ANY reason. You have food and water and sanitary facilities. Have fun. Oh yeah. Most prison bunks are like sleeping in the bathtub, so, enjoy.

Oh, those poor prisoners, you just have to have sympathy for them. How about their victims? Last time I checked, I didn't kill or rape anybody, so I don't think I'll have to worry about it anytime soon. Unless, of course, the government decides to make atheism a crime, which I wouldn't put past the current administration.

I didn't say that this was the complete Jail Reality Tour. This is sort of like the "beginner's jail for wusses" kit.

brunascle , last I heard there weren't really any monthly bills to be paid in prison....so that right there would eliminate about 95% of the stress in my life...would i take dollars a day over no bills to pay? gee....i'm not su.....WHAT? A FREAKIN TV IN MY CELL??? I'm so there!

2004-05-02 11:51:19 PM
Why did this asshat get paid ANYTHING? I mean, shouldn't all that money go into a fund labeled "give the taxpayers back their farking money"?

At his current salary, sure. But when the current salary in prison is -- what? -- 20 cents an hour, I hardly think it's a fair comparison.

Simply put: the guy already had the money. It was his. He earned it via the usual ways cons earn money in prison. All he did that was interesting was, through good behaviour, gain the privelege of being able to spend his own money on something he wanted that wasn't normally available to cons. That's it. They didn't "give him a TV", they allowed him to buy one.

If by living expenses you mean food, clothing, toiletries, etc. then yes, more often the not, the prisoner is paying for those things, at much higher prices than one would expect to pay.

2004-05-02 11:54:54 PM
Freudian_slipknot, then he has no incentive to work and get the job done well. If you give him a small amount of money for the job he can buy things like a tv even if it takes awhile. Pay a guy 50 cents for $5 of work is a lot better than paying nothing for $1 worth of work. $4.50 vs. $1.

I don't care so much about the flat-screen TV they get to have in their room, it bothers me more that they get basic cable for free. I pay 600+ a month for my university owned apartment and I don't get freakin' cable (same is true for everyone in student housing here).

2004-05-02 11:57:05 PM
This is disgusting. You people are starting to give me flashbacks of those movies where there is that one blatantly gay guy in prison with drapes and TVs and a little man servant running around cleaning his cell. Should we treat inmates like humans? Yes. Should we treat them to the amenties that a Howard Johnson offers? Not in my United States we shouldn't.

2004-05-02 11:58:06 PM
Alright, I'm outta here....

Just one thing....I thought prisoners were forced to work, and that money went into a fund so they'd have something when they got out....so they didn't have to immediately resort to crime....maybe flat-screen TVs aren't the best investment, huh?

Now, stop making me think.

shiatty, my university gives us basic cable and i even got hbo free one year because they must have turned it on in the wrong room. of course i pay more than you do a month but it's pretty good for a dorm room.

No, I read it loud and clear. The whole point was, he didn't 'work' for it. You don't 'earn' anything in prison. In case you didn't notice, the point of prison is to punish. Especially assaulting someone with a knife. Moreover, they pretty much gave it to him: A 5" flat-screen from Virgin Pulse sells for about $500. Hmmm.... if the government is so happy to give that money away, why not give it back to the law-abiding, hard-working civilian who put it there in the first place instead of pampering some criminal...? Sounds like a good idea to me.

you can get a 18" flat screen tv for $450-$500 refurbished. you'd be a retard to spend $500 on a 5"

Well, then again, there's a reason why some of them are referred to as "correctional facilities", so I don't believe I'm in complete agreement with your statement.

And truthfully, we should be fixated on stopping these people from ending up there in the first place, which means SPENDING MONEY ON SOCIAL PROGRAMS. "You reap what you sow". Spend the money now or spend it later. Get it?

He's just guilty of everything now I guess. I am optimistic enough to think that he probably did earn it, and that the Prison checks such things to prevent black markets in the penitentiary system.

Though he probably going to have to give it up to avoid some unwanted shower sex, he'll probably enjoy it for a while.

Teaching prisoners to work and enjoy the fruits of their labor through financial management can't be all bad. Maybe he will apply that when he gets out. Though who knows the circumstances concerning what he did really.

nah, i'm pretty sure if you're in prison you must be some kind of homicidal monster that deserves to be chained up in a dank 5'x5' cell with rats scurrying around. no one in jail is ever innocent *cough*couple threads down*cough* or a decent human being in any aspect. just ask any number of people in the thread.

Good analogy. Punishing rapists and murderers is just the same as exterminating jews.

GOod work = you get to eat your three meals.
Slack off = back to your room without supper.

Or was my mom a nazi too when she sent me to bed with no dinner?

It's really sad, prisoners are living a better life than some law-abiding citizens.

Well, yeah, if you discount the freedom to pretty much go whereever you want whenever you want. Hell, even if the guy was living better in prison than I am out here, he'd have to have it really good for me to want to switch with him: I can travel to the Redwood Forest, Virginia Beach, Niagara Falls, and all I have to do is fill out a piece of paper telling my boss when. This poor bastard has to ask for permission to buy a farking TV.

Yeah, he's got it good. I'm all sorts of jealous.

2004-05-03 12:05:35 AM
Yeah, and why don't they beat prisoners anymore?
They aren't alloewd to take a stick to them now and then, and that is just idiotic. These people are animals, and the only way to teach them to behave is with hard punishment.
If they knew prison was a hard place, they never would've committed crimes in the first place. They'd have worked there way up to a decent job after college like me!

2004-05-03 12:06:24 AM
Xtremehkr

the point was that a 5" does not cost a shiatload more than what he paid for his 7". i'm guessing they were probably bought in bulk for the prison store anyway and if they got like 20 units $300 each does not sound like they're taking a loss on them so it's not the taxpayer that's footing the bill. but if you want to ignore the point thats cool too.

2004-05-03 12:07:13 AM
Is there a company that bothers to sell 7" TV's? Sounds like one of those DVD players with a screen things. If so, $300 isn't bad, the last time I looked at one of those in passing it was at least $500. Wasn't any time in the near past though, I would rather spend that on an iPod and have a few 1000 songs to listen to.
