Soo, the vistims rights people want them to only watch CSPAN, TLC, and The Discovery Channel b/c of all the violence? Said people must have been under a rock the last several years to miss shows like "Prosecutors". "FBI Files", etc etc

2004-05-02 10:09:12 PM
Why in the hell should they get to watch TV at all, much less in their cell? Do the guards bring them buttered popcorn and a beer?

Let's start making prison life miserable so people will want to stay out of jail.

As opposed to the female penis, of course.

WTF?!?!?

They shouldn't get any TV at all!! Being in prison is not supposed to be a freakin' vacation! Let them read books, dammit!!

Hyernel = Tough on crime liberal!

"It was really the best solution," Geer said. "It is not a luxury item."

Huh? Sounds pretty farkin' sweet to me. Sure would make serving time at work easier.

I guess we should go ahead and throw away all the perks for good behavior? Screw allowing them to buy miniature tvs with their own money, much less getting out early for good behavior!

Excellent idea, as long as my tax dollars don't pay for it.

I'll second that one. I'm sick of hearing about prisoners being pampered. Prison shouldn't be a farking vacation. What's sad is that many low-down, skid-row types commit crimes because life in prison is better than their life on the outside. And the ultra-liberal types always retort with "they're not there to be punished, they're there to be separated from society". Bullshiat, they're there to be punished. And if you rape somebody, you deserve to get raped in the shower. I don't wanna hear anymore about "the horrors of prison rape".

Good news: You get a TV in prison.

Bad News: 27 channels of Christopher Lowell.

2004-05-02 11:29:02 PM
Wildmonkey, your tax dollars did pay for it. Or did you think they just plucked his "salary" off of the prison's money tree?

fark this; flat panel TVs? Job doing CAD work? Sonsabiatches should be out breaking rocks all damned day. "TV" should exist as a topic of "I wonder what's on it these days" not "I'm going back to my luxury dorm^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H CELL and watch it."

2004-05-02 11:29:23 PM
Prison shouldn't be a farking vacation

I'm fairly certain prison isn't a farking vacation, man. Unless your Club Med package includes your own personal ass-raping murderer.

GuinnessDrinker, who are these "low-down, skid-row types" you're talking about that commit crimes just to get room and board in state prisons (not county jails mind you, prisons)? Oh wait... that's right... you're not actually talking about something you know anything about. Because you've seen this happen on TV, it MUST be how it happens in the real world.

Here's a recommendation that I'm sure you'll ignore: spend more time trying to understand the world around you, rather than just accepting the easy-bake version of society you see on network television.

2004-05-02 11:30:53 PM
...but you didn't want to hear about that.

2004-05-02 11:31:31 PM
sorry, dude... real life is a living hell. there's no way it could be better than prison life.

Which, I imagine, is why so many people keep going back. Fully-subsidised meals and lodging, though highly structured, must be better than life on the streets for some people.

2004-05-02 11:31:32 PM
Yeah they really have this set out to them on a silver platter.

Krahmer bought the $300 television with money he earned working in prison, where he is paid a few dollars a day for computer drafting. Inmates also must have clean discipline records to qualify for the flat-screens.

Yeah, guess that they are just given those things with no incentive whatsoever.

"I've worked for it. I've stayed clear of any sort of nonsense in the institution," said Krahmer But it beats the alternative, he says a night in the recreation room with 150 or so other cons, where fights sometimes break out over what to watch and where to sit.

Hell I'd work hard to get to spend my time watching TV then gitting a shiv in my side. Perhaps some farkers need to RTFA?

2004-05-02 11:31:51 PM
let's compromise

prisoners get tv but they have to watch lifetime and pax

2004-05-02 11:33:44 PM
Yes, SteelSniper, we should just execute all the prisoners instead. Better yet, why don't we take prisoners to a secluded island and nuke it every couple of months. That will stop the people who aren't afraid of current death sentences from committing crimes. Think of how much better this country would be if even minor things like drinking and driving had been a capital offense for the last 30 years or more. To make things perfect we could add other minor crimes to the mandatory execution, such as schedule 2 drug abuse!

WTF is going on here? IT'S PRISON GOD DAMMIT!

And people farking wonder why crime is so out of hand. Even if they DO go to jail (instead of some filthy scum lawyer getting them off on a technicality) they get free cable, free health club, free this, free that, and get let out after serving half their sentence. Meanwhile I"m a slave to what seems like every bank in the nation, trying to keep enough money in my revolving-door bank account to pay all my bills on time, constantly worried about what's gonna happen to my job.

It's crap like this that really makes a rampant crime spree look like a good idea.

So the same argument will probably ensue, but maybe the point about who paid for it won't have to be repeated quite so often.

/guilty of not RTFA article myself sometimes.

We need to bring back the chain gangs. Put em to work chopping weeds and picking up litter along the highways.

2004-05-02 11:37:27 PM
Frankly, prisons would probably be more orderly if each inmate was given a TV and allowed to watch it 24/7.

Remember when prison life was "Wake up early, shower, work your ass off, lunch, work your ass off, bed....rinse, repeat"? Incidentally, we had less crime then.

I say we just outsource the prisoners to India. Why should Americans have to sit in prison, when some poor Indian could do it in his place -- for 1/4 the cost!

We should build labor camps in the northern parts of Alaska and put them in there instead of giving them this. I'm thinking something like Rura Penthe from Star Trek VI. Who's with me??

I still don't think you are going to try prison anytime soon. "Health Clubs" what?

I think putting people into complete voids may be more detrimental. Not trying to create psycho's, just punish what they have done.

it's not free buttheads, they earn the money by working, something like 20 cents an hour.

instead of whining about how easy prison is for these people, why not get a clue and realize that teaching those inmates who are going to be getting out that good behavior and hardwork is an acceptable way to get better things than the ways they used to get them in prison in the first place.

2004-05-02 11:40:39 PM
You Conservative "don't give them shiat" blowhards need to grab a breath. Firstlym, I would like to point out that prison populations are largely THE POOR, so dont sweat the 300 TV. Secondly, if you aversive control bush dildo freaks are so hot and bothered to stop these folks (who we see every month killing some young girl after being released) from being criminals, w4y not give them the TV programming that makes us Americans?

Idiots.

You make a world where Jesus AND American Idol are number one and you biatch about the consequences. MANY innocent people - peeps w/o highspeedDSL, Rich Relatives, or the requisite Melanine Count are languishing and you crab about the crappy programming you actually pay for? STFU! You are ignorant sheep.

LOL at you pension police morons and the idiots who avoid DWIs because your relatives diddle each other.

gogto prison for some stupid crime then come back and spout off all your bullshiat about how his work shouldnt give him a chance to watch TV in his cell, He worked for that. It wasnt handed to him as a gift, it took about 2yrs to earn enough money to be able to watch the TV, schit read the article before you make stupid ass remarks.

2004-05-02 11:41:12 PM
Not everybody in prison is a low-life savage fresh out of the street gutter. Ever hear of bad checks? Pot busts? Unpaid fines? ? Besides, he had to WORK for it, it wasn't given to him as some freebie.

2004-05-02 11:41:51 PM
"I'm sick of hearing about prisoners being pampered."

This is a common enough complaint. However, has the complainer ever been to jail? Prison? Visited someone there? Jail is not a fun place.

Lock yourself in your bathroom for 48 hours, making sure you have a couple of books, even a radio or TV. Bring some munchies. Hell, bring whatever you want so long as it is not booze, drugs, or cigarettes. You cannot leave for ANY reason. You have food and water and sanitary facilities. Have fun. Oh yeah. Most prison bunks are like sleeping in the bathtub, so, enjoy.

That's actually a pretty good point....however, in general, prisoners have it a shiatload easier then they used to. If the prisoners don't waaaant to work, then what? They go without? Ok, are they learning anything, other than boredom? Did detention ever work on anyone in school?

"I've never seen an episode of 'Survivor.' I'm eager to watch that."

This guy needs to stay in jail longer. Him and the Nielsen families are making network tv totally unwatchable.

I occationally get vagrants that wander into my store ( |>> Food Mart ) and cause trouble just so that they can spend a night in the county jail. Actually their life style doesn't seem all that unappealing since I think they might actually make more money than me.
