This article seemed too surreal to be true.

...a meat cleaver? WTF!

2004-05-01 08:40:15 PM
Which one?

Unreal Tournament

2004-05-01 08:41:00 PM
Wow. I never thought I would get a laugh out of the brutal murder of a non-cartoon character.

But that's a damn clever headline.

VEHICULAR HOMOCIDE! That HAS to be my favorite now.

Somehow I doubt this guy's going to get anything more than life. Travis county is extremely liberal. Plus, a meat cleaver doesn't exactly seem like the type of weapon you would use if this was pre-meditated. He's obviously got psychological issues that will come into play at the trial.

Seems as though "Jackson Fan" wasn't thinking too clearly...I mean, everyone knows that you don't pull a meat cleaver on Austin police unless you want a bullet in the head. This guy was definitely going to suicide by cop. I'm surprised that APD tasered him instead of shooting him...I bet he was, too.

Hats off to APD for using good judgment and bringing this guy in alive. If he had taken one step toward one of the officers then they would have had every right to shoot.

Hopefully I'm wrong about the life sentence and this guy gets what he deserves.

You all make me sick. This is nothing to laugh at.

Shouldn't he have gone after the art teacher?

2004-05-01 08:50:24 PM
I attend the UT school of music, but I'm not a piano major.

I didn't know either party personally, but I knew who the professor was.

What we are hearing is that he kept saying she had a microchip in her brain and he was trying to take it out. It wasn't a crime of anger or vengeance, just a lunatic who went batty and started attacking her with a meat cleaver.

Apparently they had a mutual relationship of assistance. He helped her with her MS and she helped him with his psychosis.

2004-05-01 08:54:55 PM
As a grad student, I can attest that there are days when you just want to pick up a cleaver and start chopping up profs. But you don't, because then noone will want to supervise your thesis. So you repress your anger, and let it out in other ways. Like making full scale reproductions of Rodin's sculptures out of Ivory soap.

This isn't funny. You've all demonstrated incredibly poor taste. And they say violent video games don't acclimate you to violence. You're laughing at someone's murder. Wish I was a mod so I could ban all you terrible people.

2004-05-01 08:55:21 PM
Its funny because the university is called UT, which is the abbreviation for Unreal Tournament. And in that game, disembodied heads make witty comentary about your gameplay.

Not to speak ill of the dead (especially since it will only fuel the FARK insensitivity squad), but of all the professors that I dealt with as a staff member at the School of Music, she is the one most likely to be beaten to death by a deranged student...

Still sad though. I'm wondering what my ex-co-workers will be dealing with come Monday morning.

2004-05-01 08:57:38 PM
jasjas, excellent headline!

Get another one approved in the next 20 minutes, and you'll get a double kill...

2004-05-01 09:00:31 PM
No, you think it is funny because your sense of humor is incredibly lacking. Either that, or your parents did a terrible job raising you. I've come to Fark for quite some time now, but I don't think I will any more. Someone didn't die. They were murdered. Something was taken violently, against someone's will, against God's will. I can say with relative certainty that professor loved and was beloved, but that is over now. And you find humor in it. You are all terrible human beings, and I hope you never live this down. I'm out for good. Mods, cancel my account please. I'm just grateful I never paid for that Total Fark account.

Hello, welcome to FARK.

We dealt with it yesterday. They brought in crisis counselors and held an emergency meeting to keep us from talking to the press. And I agree, she seemed most likely to be the victim of a random murder.
She wasn't exactly sound as a pound herself...

Relative to the rest of Texas, anyway. Travis county sends a number of people to Death Row, although maybe not as many as other jurisdictions.

Plus, a meat cleaver doesn't exactly seem like the type of weapon you would use if this was pre-meditated. He's obviously got psychological issues that will come into play at the trial.

Given that he had been assisting the victim with activities of daily living for some time, and the fact that he waited around for the police to arrive, it seems very possible that he killed her out of some demented sense of mercy. I doubt very much she asked him to use a meat cleaver for an assisted suicide, though.

I find it funny that the same people that make jokes in threads where lots of people die are now horrified by us joking about one lady getting the chop.

Stalin syndrome anyone?

/Handicapped nubians get it too!

Speaking as someone who plays Unreal Tournament AND as someone who has tried to get into non-major piano classes at the University of Texas, I kind of wish I didn't enjoy the headline so much.

2004-05-01 09:09:21 PM
Actually I heard the last thing she said was: "N00b C4mp3r F4g" and that was when he snapped.

I wonder if he was waiting to snipe her on respawn?

It's something called 'Gallows humor' or 'Black humor'.

Essentially, it's mostly a mental defense mechanism. Do you know why we have it?

Because if people were not able to laugh at the ammusing coincidences that sometimes crop up in things like this, people would be so paralyzed by the pain and suffering that occurs in this world every single day that we'd just shut down.

They're not actually glad that this person died. They're not really even making fun of the person who died. They're looking at the situation, and finding an amusing parallel, and it keeps their minds off of what happened .

Yes, it is sad, and horrible, that this woman died. I also feel sorry for the student, who was, as it seems, nutso.

But the headline was still friggin funny if you've played Unreal Tournament.

Your hatred and anger is both misplaced and counter-productive. And could, in some ways, be considered hypocritical...

This is not funny people. I am still in shock. I mean how could the CS guys just blatantly rip off UT's killing spree?

Okay. I get it. I'm not a gamer (I have better things to do with my time, like raise a family and contribute positively to society), it took a while to figure out what could possibly be funny about a brutal murder.

You people who think it's funny are still pathetic.

So do you cry and weep at every injustice that occurs in the world? I imagine you must find what's going on currently in the middle east far more tramautizing then this. Indiffence and apathy to killing, is, in some ways, worse than gallows humor. At least the humor is an attempt to stave away the saddness: It is not done out of malice.

But apathy and indiffence.. that's really almost like pretending the actions didn't occur, or that the problem doesn't even exist. Yes, making fun of these things is in poor taste. But if you choose to judge other people in this fashion...

Expect others to judge you, too.

2004-05-01 09:27:58 PM
Since when is murder not funny?

This must be that new, sensitive, post-9/11 America I've heard about. We don't like boobies on TV anymore, Howard Stern is a target of the government, and Farkers are getting offended by the headlines.

I miss the 1990s. Prince was right.

2004-05-01 09:35:20 PM
gurglesnap: I think most of the faculty knew about it soon after it happened. I had a jazz class at noon friday and the prof brought it up.

Thats pretty crazy if that thing about him thinking a microchip was in her brain is true. Jesus.

I will admit I'm surprised APD used the Taser instead of shooting him. It was only a year or two ago they shot that woman to death who was armed with only a small knife... then again, she was black. (sorry, APD has a pretty poor record regarding shooting deaths of some minorities)

"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when YOU fall down an open manhole and die." -Mel Brooks.

This is the root of comedy: other people's pain. A guy gets kicked in the crotch and everyone else laughs. Except the guy, because he just got kicked in the crotch. But I guarantee you that the same guy will laugh his head off if he sees someone else getting kicked in the crotch.

The headline made me laugh outloud. Yes, it is insensitive and crude and that makes it funnier.

2004-05-01 09:40:01 PM
Yeah, someone died, but the headline was hilarous. Man, you'd think this was the first time some of these posters have ever been to Fark.

"But what if it was someone you knew and loved?"

I dunno. It might still be funny. Especially if they were dressed in a clown suit.

My mother received an email from National Society of Professional Music Instructors telling all music instructors to be careful about copycats.

I apologize, I may have inadvertantly killed him today. I got a Wicked Sick and I did not pay a lot of attention to the names.

2004-05-01 09:41:13 PM
Didn't get this headline, but I submitted this article with a half-assed new version of chopsticks joke.

I'm a texas ex, and I can still see humor in someone being murdered with a meatcleaver. Horrible tradgedy, but I mean, come on, a meat cleaver? That is funny.

I suppose all you whiners must be in tears when any darwin awards are posted on the site.

blah.

Felgraf:

No, I don't cry and weep at every injustice, though I do stop to consider that injustice itself sucks. Call me a liberal, if you want. That's your choice, though labels suck.

Yes, I do find what's going on in the Middle East more traumatizing than this because what is happening over there affects us all; me, you, all the other Farkers out there.

My words were spoken in haste and yes, they were judgemental. For that I apologize. I have enjoyed peeking into the Fark community, though I do so without a complete understanding of its thought processes. Most of the time, I admire the wit and intelligence of its members.

I also appreciate your description of the difference between indifference and apathy. I think you are dead on (no pun intended).

This one just struck close to home.
