If I love - and I mean love a movie, I will buy the original and even one of the special editions. After that, fark 'em. I bought the original Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and the Collector's Edition, but I couldn't bring myself to drop even more money on that black boxed version they released a year later. I bought the Fellowship and TTT original and Extended releases, and I'll do the same for RotK. Ditto on Kill Bill, both versions. I think it's worth it. After the second one though, it's too much.

/I'm a consumer whore

I've probably bought certain titles four times. Videotape, collector's edition videotape, DVD, collector's edition DVD...etc., but only for movies I really, really love like Spacemarinekilla, but am a little more world weary on picking up early releases of things because I realize a year or so down the line, an "ultimate" version will be released.

It's similar to the LP to Tape to CD to SACD/Audio DVD path I've been on for several things. I think I have "Dark Side of The Moon" in every format it's been in except for maybe laserdisc and 8 track! Same goes for "Night" and "Dawn of the Dead", "Escape from New York" and a bunch of "The Cars" music.

Damn better formats with more extras! I can't help myself!

" `Vol. 1' goes out, `Vol. 2' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It's called multiple bites at the apple."

It's called farking your fans.

It's worth your money to bookmark sites like The Digital Bits and DVD review so you can know the details about what is coming out.

2004-04-27 02:32:01 PM
Spacemarinekilla said it all.

I do the same thing. If I REALLY like the movie, I buy the DVD - if I really, really, really like the movie, I'll buy the extended/special edition/double whammy version but I'll stop there.

BTW, if Peter Jackson wants me to be his biatch (special extended edition version of the LOTR, all the extended editions together but with even more stuff), I'll make an exception to the above.

2004-04-27 02:57:53 PM
I was genuinely annoyed with the whole multiple editions thing. On the first DVD release of the The Fellowship of the Ring, there was a link to view extras or deleted scenes or something ( can't remember the actual name anymore). You clicked on it and it displayed a message about waiting for the super duper DVD version of The Fellowship of the Ring. I felt like I got ripped off.

2004-04-27 02:58:28 PM
They'd better milk it while they can. DVD burners are cheaper and easier to use than ever.

I have 102 DVDs that I bought, but my DVD burner is only 3 weeks old and it already has 22 movies under its belt.

2004-04-27 04:44:17 PM
They did that to me with Fellowship. Now I just rent the first DVD release once and wait a couple of months for the extended edition before I buy.

/Fool me once, shame on me...

Peter Jackson was always very upfront about releasing the theatrical version first and then the extended cut. You weren't fooled. You were impatient.

2004-04-27 05:03:57 PM
The absolute worst is Army of Darkness. Sam Raimi has put out like 20 different editions of that one. The best is the foam Necronomicon version. It's supposedly "rare", but I see copies all the time.

2004-04-27 06:39:49 PM
I have both versions of both currently available LotR films, and I'll buy both versions of Return of the King. I knew in advance that each version was coming out, and I don't feel ripped off. If the initial releases were Kill Bill Vol. 1-type barebones fare, I wouldn't, but they're packed two-discs sets with plenty of bonus features themselves. I end up with two versions of the moviesand TONS of bonus stuff.

This Kill Bill crap, though, it ticks me off. I expected the two basic releases followed by a "complete" edition which would have both movies and would include the B/W House of Blue Leaves scene restored to color and whatever other additional footage QT wanted to include. I was content with buying that much. But Miramax wants us to buy special editions of each film separately before the combined release? Fark that, they're not getting my money. In fact, I may just pass on any further releases after the basic KBV2 DVD, just because of this.

In the meantime, let's get some Scrubs DVDs! I love TV series sets (when they're affordably priced). Much better running time-to-price value than your average movie, and there's just nothing like watching eight hours worth of Buffy in one day...

I've bought the original Star Wars trilogy about fifty-gazillion times now, and I'm gonna buy it again this fall...

2004-04-27 06:50:54 PM
Yeah, I got screwed on LOTR-1 also. I refused to give them the satisfaction and buy the same movie twice, but it pissed me off that I had the "inferior" version.

So when LOTR-2 came out, I waited for the extended version.

/fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me.

Usenet.... ah....

2004-04-27 06:51:56 PM
Luckily I dont give a damn about all those stupid extra features. I'll just watch the movie, so I can just buy the one edition. Very very few movies have enough deleted scenes to make me want to buy the special or extended edition. And frankly I could care less about directors and actors talking about making the movie.

2004-04-27 06:52:20 PM
I will buy any DVD with Terry Gilliam commentary. It could be a DVD of him just commenting and I would buy it.

Each one seems to be a continuation of the last commentary track where he spends the entire movie biatching about how much he hates hollywood.

Give me multiple editions of him.

2004-04-27 06:52:24 PM
I just stick to netflix. So I dont care. No cares at all.

I've spent the years since replacing those early acquisitions with newfangled DVD versions of the same movies.

If you have such a problem with buying the same movie twice (and what somewhat intelligent person wouldn't) then why the sh*t are you buying the new versions each time they come out!?!?

Bah, I call shenanigans on that quote. Shenanigans, I say!

"Yet it seems only a matter of time before the public's love of DVDs is poisoned with anger at the studios for exploiting that love for more and more money."

Well, no one's making them buy multiple copies. Just buy the farkin' movie. I know extras are cool but think...what was the world like when we just had VHS? No special features, no director's commentary. Just the previews, and the movie. Maybe a "Special Edition."

Just buy the farkin' movie and forget the extras.

2004-04-27 06:53:03 PM
I like it when people buy 4 versions of the same movie - because that means that 3 people can download it and it doesn't really affect the movie industries profit - I mean - its really the same thing isn't it? 4 people, 4 movies.

/living guilt free

2004-04-27 06:54:06 PM
amen....it aint 1997 anymore people! make good dvd's when they come out!

2004-04-27 06:54:41 PM
speaking of dvd jackholery, i love it how every dvd released, evah, is tagged "collector's edition".

Freaky Friday: the Collector's edition
Dude, Where's my Car (Collector's edition)
Gigli: The Collector's Edition!

2004-04-27 06:55:14 PM
What is being missed here is that kill bill is an awesome movie. The first one could have used a little more slicing, and a lot more slashing, but the stabbing was very substancial. I was drunk when I saw the second one, but it could have used more of all three. Maybe the special editions will fix these problems.

2004-04-27 06:55:14 PM
My boyfriend calls the first release the "sucker version." I think it's aptly named. suckers.

2004-04-27 06:55:30 PM
Hey, so long as the content is good, the extras are substantial, and the price is right, I'll buy a movie twice. With LotR, Peter Jackson needed the extra time to put together the special editions. Now that the movies are over the regular and special editions can come out quicker.

Of course, if you put out more than two editions, that's just greed.

Don't forget the "Platinum" and "Premiere" editions.

2004-04-27 06:55:54 PM
Well yes, they're screwing us blind. But at least they pack them with commercials that we can't bypass.

2004-04-27 06:56:02 PM
My list of repeats:

Star Wars Original movies - Original and the Extended editions

Star Wars Ep 1 - On VHS and then on DVD (a waste both ways)

Aliens Movies - on VHS and then the Special editions and now the 9 DVD box set

Personally, I have held off buying the LotR Box sets since I know when the ROTK comes out, there will be a new version for all of them, the Uber-goddess, must have or we will come to your place and fark you up the arse, Gollum plays the role of Gandalf the Puce Edition.

/Can we say RIP-OFF

Oh how I _HATE_ articles like this.

If people didnt like the multiple editions, THEY WOULDNT BUY THEM.

Yeesh.

I mean, Look at me. Bladerunner is one of my favorite movies, and I havnt bought the DVD yet because its a CRAP release, and I know another one is coming.

They have to find some way to get people to pay $50/movie like they did back in the Laserdisc era...

2004-04-27 06:58:00 PM
Hey! Let's not forget the Import Japanese versions of both Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 and their special editions. That brings the total to a whopping 10 versions!

Is anyone surprised at this? My God, I was pissed when they came out with the 4 different versions of the 10th Anniv. Reservoir Dogs.

The worst was the Memento DVD. The first one had nothing on it and the second had that cool ass package and they both came out about 3 months apart. Grrrrrr...

/wishes he had a DVD burner

2004-04-27 06:58:54 PM
No one is making you go out and buy every version of a movie that comes out on DVD. Let the studios make numerous DVDs of the same movie. I'm buying a DVD to watch the movie, not to watch the extra features. Now, when it comes to deleted scenes or director's cuts, we could be talking a different story (see: Lord of the Rings). If I want to see some extra features that come on a new DVD set than the one I originally bought, maybe I'll rent it. If you're a really big fan of a movie, then most likely you won't mind buying all the "special" editions anyway as it's more redundant crap to add to your collection.
I'm happy with my Kill Bill Vol. 1 DVD because it has the full theatrical release of the movie and that's all I need.

2004-04-27 06:58:54 PM
Ahahahah, I've been downloading Divx and XVid for so long now, the quality isn't as good, but the price can't be beat!

2004-04-27 06:59:31 PM
how can you complain about the kill bill dvds and ignore that they have already screwed everyone who saw it in the theaters. They took a 3 hour movie - cut it in 2 - beefed up the credits on the second one to make it longer and got everybody to pay twice to see one movie at the theater. And it worked really well-- expect to see more of this in the future.

2004-04-27 07:00:04 PM
Felt like quite the kick in the nuts when a couple months after buying Black Hawk Down, the three-disc version comes out. Augh!

I can only cringe at what Lucas is planning for Star Wars Epsidoes I-VI "Super-Extra-Mega-Han-Shot-First-Or-Did-He?-Butchered Edition" on 87 farking discs.

I'm buying all three LOTR Extended versions once they're out, then NEVER AGAIN.

Buy DVDs when they're in the $10 bargain barrel. What with the life expectancy of CD-R and DVD-R media up in question (possible 2-year lifespan), who's to say DVDs being made today aren't engineered for a short lifespan? Even 5 or 10 years would be to the industry's advantage. Screw extra features. Just get a film in letterbox and be happy.

2004-04-27 07:03:04 PM
Umm... folks, there's a really devious and top-secret reason why they do this: because people buy them! If you wouldn't laid down the cash for multiple copies of the same movie, they wouldn't sell them. As much as I hate the movie industry, I really can't fault them on this one. If someone will buy something, they'll be more than happy to take your money.

I never watch the extra shiat anyhow; I've got better things to do with my life than spend hours and hours watching the same film.

2004-04-27 07:03:17 PM
Shadap, farking whiners.

If you insist on paying for the same movie 2,3,4 times or more, just to get 30 more minutes of useless documntary each time, then you are an idiot who deserves to be parted with your money, and the studios are right in taking that money from you.

I'm a big fan of some movies too, Like The Terminator series, Star Wars, matrix, etc - but I already have them, and I can give a rats ass about a future "collectors edition", or "directors cut", or "enhanced remastered super duper extravanganza". THe movies will be the same, just as exciting/awesome/stupid/boring as they always were. I have already seen them, and I maybe watch them once or twice a year. Big farking deal.

2004-04-27 07:03:22 PM
The only movie I have twice on DVD is the regular Fight Club and Special Edition Fight Club, but before buying the SE I set up a time and place to sell the old DVD too, no foul done.

But when Romero's Dead Trilogy is released in Box Set, I'm gonna have 3 extra movies laying around...makes me sad.

2004-04-27 07:03:43 PM
good call fleener there are going to be a lot of pissed off people in a few years when their dvds wont play any more and those old vhs tapes from the '80s are still good.

Step 2 - Wait for ultra-uber edition
Step 3 - Sell 1st versions and buy ultra-uber edition
Step 4 - Enjoy Tarantino goodness

Why does anyone buy a DVD?

How many times can you watch the damn thing?

I mean I love movies. I see hundred of movies a year, at the theater, or via netflix, or occassionally Big Bad Blockbuster. And yes, I own a few: The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars original trilogy. But I rarely even watch those and their my favorite movies of all time.

Now, if only Blockbuster had porn....

Army of Darkness never had a Necronomicon version. Evil Dead did. As you said, however, there are a lot of versions of it out (6 if I'm not missing any).

I agree. I just realized, out of all the dvd's I own(a substantial amount), there are very few I've watched the special features on. I could count on a two fingered hand how many I've watched more then once. It's all worthless. Gimmie the cheapie dvds, in the crappy cases. It's all I need.

2004-04-27 07:08:30 PM
I went to the store and saw some special edition of Fear and Loathing, but they were charging $30 for it. The only features seemed not worthy of buying a second copy of the movie DVD.

If I wanted a bunch of people talking about the movie, I would have called them.

So I bought Blow instead, for $12

Man, I thought I was doing pretty good when I had the Director's Cut Platinum Collector's Edition 2 Disc Boxed set. But then my neighbor got the Director's Cut Extra-Chrome-Plated-Platinum Collector's Edition 2 Disc Boxed set, and he mocked my puny Platinum set. I had no choice! Those movie making bastards.

2004-04-27 07:10:21 PM
That's one of the more helpful articles I've seen yet on Fark. I never really thought about it that way, but they really do seem to be taking advantage of people with this. Don't know about all you fellow farkers, but I vote with my wallet in cases like this. I'd rather wait the obligatory 6 extra months until the final edition comes out, and I suspect most of my friends will do the same when they read this story. And they'll be reading it right after I post this. ;-)

2004-04-27 07:10:37 PM
Subsequent editions don't lower the value of the original. If it was worth your money at the time you paid for it, what do you have to complain about? If you feel so compelled to have the very latest and best of everything, then you're a sucker with more omney than sense and you deserve to get milked.

They took a 3 hour movie - cut it in 2 - beefed up the credits on the second one to make it longer and got everybody to pay twice to see one movie at the theater.

You mean a 4+ hour movie. That would stretch my limits in a theatre, and I have a large bladder.

Also, using this model of releasing a movie depends very heavily on one factor: the movie has to not suck. I'm happy to pay double for a two-part movie, of which each part is twice as good as the average 2 hour piece of shiat coming of Hollywood.

2004-04-27 07:10:39 PM
Here is what I do.

I rent a movie from blockbuster, convert it to high quality divx. Then if I really really really like the movie, I will buy the boxed set or collectors set. Only one though.

Funny thing is, I have a server with 200+ gigs of movies, and the only ones I have watched more then once are the DVDs I already own.

/hold on, there's someone knocking at my door
