Feh... frames. There's always "Open frame in new window".

2002-01-03 04:57:49 PM
Yea, right.

I'd be opposed to it, but fark needs to survive too.

Just some generic thoughts

2002-01-03 04:58:31 PM
If the frame pop-ups contained ads they would get squashed by pop-up killer....if it was java i'd get ill and find a new site

2002-01-03 04:58:58 PM
Drew, just put up whatever freaking ads you want up here. Either that, or charge admission to the comments area. People need to either put up or shut up.

2002-01-03 04:59:08 PM
If it ain't broke...................

You get the idea.

What if Bin Ladin was hiding in frames?

2002-01-03 05:05:15 PM
I'd rather have ads and Fark, than no ads, and no Fark. Do whatever you have to do to keep this site up and running, Drew.

2002-01-03 05:05:26 PM
I would go kick a baby dog!

2002-01-03 05:05:27 PM
Did you boneheads even read the question? Do you even know what a frame is? An HTML frameset is pretty benign (look up the meaning of that word if you have to), unlike popups, popunders and banner ads. A frameset doesn't hurt a damn thing.

Hint: location=_top

Hey, Drew, still waiting on that "premium registration" idea... ^_~;

Hey, I'm not a bonehead!
Yet, still positive that I would go kick a baby dog.

Depends on the type of ad really... frankly i'm getting really pissed off at that blinking green "buy our shiat" one already

If this is what I think it is, then I'd be unhappy with it. I give to the beer fund, I have no problem with charging for membership, but I hate to see the content and feel of this site mutilated in order to milk money out of people that won't pay.

If they don't want to support the site, if they can't cough up a reasonable amount for admission, show them the door. Don't trash the content for the rest of us though.

2002-01-03 05:14:00 PM
I don't mind ads, but pop-ups are going to be ignored and anything blinking gives me seizures

2002-01-03 05:14:28 PM
Only if it is that "catch the monkey" one.

or p0nr0.

2002-01-03 05:14:37 PM
drew, is this another survey for the marketing guy?

2002-01-03 05:16:07 PM
There are so many people that visit this site, and so many of them are so cheap, that they won't give shiat all to the beer fund to keep this place up and running. fark 'em.

Do whatever it takes to keep this place operational.

2002-01-03 05:20:52 PM
I would rather pay not to see them!

2002-01-03 05:21:55 PM
What a revoltin development that is.

2002-01-03 05:22:38 PM
Captain
You're the one sounding like a cheap ass. Are you the type that makes sure everyone is looking when you put money in the United Way bucket? I bet you are.

2002-01-03 05:24:32 PM
Drew, whatever works for you. Do what you gotta do.

2002-01-03 05:26:40 PM
Drew, why don't you... Er... experiment with ads? You could try having ads only on Wednesday or something like that. It could work. Just experiment, and study the feedback!

2002-01-03 05:27:32 PM
Subscriptions. Sell 'em. Those who don't like the idea can fark off.

Have fark's "public" page contain limited content (not the whole day's worth of links, say maybe 5) and allow posting (new submissions and in the comment area) only from paid subscribers. The signal to noise ratio would swing WAY back over to the good side.

Ok, since that didn't really address the question, I'd keep reading.

2002-01-03 05:28:17 PM
The question is: How much can you make from ads/banners etc?

If everyone here payed $1/£1/€1 (whatever) to access the site for a year, I'm sure he'd be winning!

How many members are there? 18-19,000??? That's not bad money! Hey, make it $3 each...

"Drew manages site from Beach Hut - Farking Lovely!"

2002-01-03 05:29:57 PM
Is there a snail mail address for donations to Fark?

2002-01-03 05:32:46 PM
payed = paid

2002-01-03 05:33:45 PM
Frames are too old fashioned. Not many web designers I speak to like to use them anymore, and it makes content hard to search for via search engines. And they're ugly.

Membership fee might kill the site. You got the mentality of a lot of people here who use file sharing, cracks, warez etc. These people are the main demographic of Fark, at least it seems to me; they make the most noise on the comments sections. So it would seem likely that these people wouldn't dig a payed membership thing, because they are geared to free stuff.

And basically, the content on Fark is mostly from other sites. If you do add a fee, you risk spreading the Fark membership out onto other sites that don't charge, and fragmenting the community. Although what Fark has is a certain indefinable gen-X sarcastic world view-community thing, it can migrate to other sites, all they need is an EZboard.

If ya wanna put ads on the page, just stick 'em in there. I don't personally care about ad banners and stuff. Pop ups are irritating, but not exactly the worst thing in the world, although too much is too much. Frames are so 1997, IMHO, the least desirable option.

I would pay a monthly membership fee, but I think this would be a bad move for Fark right now. If you have no choice, thats a different matter. It doesn't look like Drew & c. are considering this, though. Members area would be more logical, if anything like that was to be attempted.

What if Bin Ladin was hiding in frames?"

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

2002-01-03 05:40:58 PM
i'd much rather pay a membership fee, than have the ad placements continue to grow.

i'll pay $50 - $100 for a year's membership w/ no ads.

2002-01-03 05:43:53 PM
If it ain't broke...................

i think its more that Drew is broke...

and yeah, whack an Ad in there.. Hotmail does it, fark can too. it already goes through your cgi server anyway.

2002-01-03 05:44:40 PM
Leopold: I'm aware of what frames are. Don't forget that most of the sites that get linked to have ads of their own; at some point your browser would look like Times Square.

If there's ads surrounding the story I'd sooner pop the story out of them, than deal with the additional distraction.

2002-01-03 05:45:26 PM
here's an idea, drew makes like a week of pop-up or banner ads or whatever, and has we all have some sort of contest to see who can click it the most and give fark the most cash. Plus, we could have a couple farkers with extreme bandwidth dedicate their systems to accessing fark's banner ads for a few hours while they are gone... just think, $.05 a click, times a 100 million clicks, should be plenty for all the beer drew can guzzle

2002-01-03 05:46:43 PM
Frames are not entirely benign....It can make it difficult to bookmark pages on a site, create desktop shortcuts to pages or send pages to friends, etc., unless you put the right kind of javascript in there.

2002-01-03 05:53:11 PM
Don't.....please don't.
I don't want any baby dogs to get kicked.

Here buddy! Where the hell is that dog!

2002-01-03 05:53:21 PM
...and for 19.95 a month you can upgrade to the Fark Platinum package...

2002-01-03 05:54:54 PM
If you go this route keep in mind those sigh-impaired folks who come here to read the articles with their text-to-speech programs. Frames can really foul those programs up.

And some pop-up programs overzealously kill popups of ALL kinds.

2002-01-03 05:55:14 PM
Hey, I don't mind the advertising as much as I do the frames. Frames are evil.

2002-01-03 05:59:35 PM
Do whatever you have to do to keep the site going.

2002-01-03 06:00:52 PM
put a million poop-ups on the main pag drew. dont do this frame shiat. people with pop-up stopper wont have to worry, and you will get paid.

2002-01-03 06:20:05 PM
You gotta pay the bills, mon. I say go for it.

One place I'd like to see frames, is on the Caption pages. so you can see the picture as you read thru the comments.

2002-01-03 06:27:41 PM
Putting ads on other people's sites with frames? Been done (in 1997). People been sued for it. http://www.google.com/search?q=TotalNews+Lawsuit. Bzzzt. Try again. I really hope you can make money on this, Drew. This technique just won't work, from a legal standpoint.

2002-01-03 06:35:19 PM
I pay for premium content and no ads at another site I visit every day.

The thing that convinced me to take the jump wasn't popups or banner ads, since NetCaptor and WebWasher pretty much cleans those up. What convinced me was that the site would die unless they got some revenue, and they were cool enough to price a year at 40 bucks. I can spare 40 bucks a year to a site that I get literally an hour or two a day out of. I pay more for less content in any 3 magazine subscriptions I have.

If Fark went subscription, offering only limited access on the front page, I'll be one of the first to sign up, AS LONG AS THE PRICE IS REASONABLE!

There's a number in people's heads, and the trick is to guess the one that most people are thinking, but one that also pays your bandwidth bill. I'd guess it's between 25-75 bucks a year. Any more and you will lose a lot of readers. Any less and you might not make a difference in your bill!

I hope you do go premium, with expanded content for members and a limited front page for the public. If the price is right, I'll pay it gladly.

As for frames, there's absolutely nothing wrong with them if the code is managed right. The problem over the years is that no one bothered to do them *right*, and they ended up pissing people off.

Use 'em if you gotta, but I'd rather pay a premium for adless, frameless, expanded content.

2002-01-03 06:38:37 PM
MisterSquishy: About.com's been doing it for a while and continues to do so. I guess some legal research would have to be done but I don't see how framing on Fark would differ from the framing About does.

And as for ads in general, I think Drew should finally set up paid membership. Increase ad placements on the free version and offer 2 levels of membership: Standard Fark without ads and Fark Plus (or whatever you want to call it) that would include all articles submitted, not just the accepted ones and then maybe some other exclusive features. I know I'm willing to pay for Fark, either just standard without ads (if the ads really start coming, which I think they probably will) or standard plus the ability to see all articles submitted. It's just a matter of waiting for Drew to set it up =P

2002-01-03 06:40:35 PM
40- 75 bucks a year is far, far too much. You'd have 3 members.

I would pay for a fark.com email address!!!

2002-01-03 06:50:37 PM
Whatever pays the bills. The best way to get money from me would be to expand on some type of premium services.

What would be very cool? Daily email summaries based on what categories were submitted that day. ("there were 2 news flash and 3 boobies posts today")

Also, of course, exclusion from frame ads and all that.

By the way, I don't think you're in trouble for opening new windows in frames with your ads in them. As long as you're not obstructing the ads on the sites being linked to, you should be OK.

Hotmail still does that, right?
