Just about anything on an English menu.

Blood pudding... no way in hell.

2004-04-21 07:55:43 PM
Mondongo prepared by street vendors in Santo Domingo. It's a tripe dish that's popular in the Dominican Republic and adored my most of my family. The smell alone turned me vegetarian for two years

I won't try wolf nipple chips.
Other than that, most everything is fair game. I didn't like the monkfish soup my mom made once, and I'm not a fan of liver. (If course, I like goose liver pate and liverwurst, so not sure) I like sushi, oysters (raw, smoked, steamed, fried), calamari, and just about every other 'icky' food.

2004-04-21 08:01:39 PM

mmmm.... pressed peanut sweepings...!

My vote would be for Indy Decos

1. Any gut food (brain, liver, kidney, stomach, intestines, etc.)
2. Testicles
3. Pistles
4. Hooves/feet
4. Whole animals that have not been gutted or still have the head
5. Spit or excretions from said animals (bird's nest, etc)
6. Meat from canines, felines, primates, dolphins or whales

Of course this is my Chinese friend's weekly menu.

sea urchin....wow, try it and you'll know what I mean.

Uni can be really good. But if it's even a little bit bad, it can send you gagging to the loo.

Nasty nasty

and most of the other stuff on there too.

I will never touch gefilte (sp) fish ever again.

I gagged for five minutes from the tiniest bite.

Hotdogs!

2004-04-21 08:20:12 PM
what's wrong with you people? mustard, mayo, shrimp, bananas, tomatoes? I'll have me a sandwich with all those and wouldn't even blink! I can't stomach (pun?) tripe, or some organs like brains. I don't mind tongue, liver, chicken hearts / livers, iguana, sushi (spicy tuna sashimi, mmmm), raw turtle eggs.

Maybe a genetic thing, but my parents both like it, so must be a recessive gene.

Eggs, various organs (although my mother used to make me liverwurst sandwiches when I was a kid, and those were okay because I had no idea what they were).

Also, and most of all, MUSHROOMS. If I get even one in my food, it tends to sporulate all over the other things and ruin them. This is why mushrooms are the devil.

zxcasd, or anyone, for that matter: Know any good sushi places in SD? I'm moving there soon, from LA (lots of good sushi here).

When I say 'good', I really mean it; my dad owned/ran a sushi bar when I was growing up.

2004-04-21 08:29:17 PM
poont-tang. Won't eat the stuff. Licking it though...

hey buntz, hearts of palm is my favorite! Good in a salad with endive. Yum! :)

My wife's aunt used to make SPINACH POPSICLES and hand them out to the neighborhood kids.

(mostly I'm here to vote)

Pilchard & peanut butter smoothies.
Sardine & tapioca pizza.

Sulze

25 lb. each of cured pork snouts, pork lips, pork tongues and lean shoulder meat (cured in a standard ham pickle)

3 oz. ground white pepper
1.5 oz. ground caraway
3 oz. ground coriander
1 oz. ground nutmeg
Salt and vinegar taste
Diced pickles and pimentos
Gelatin

1. After meat has been cured, simmer in enough water to cover until tender. Meat should remain in chunks. Cooking meat in nets is preferable.
2. Remove from cooking tank, rinse with hot water and chill,
3. Dice chilled meat in pieces of desired size and rinse with 180 F. water to remove all excess grease which will cause cloudiness in the finished product.
4. Mix diced meat with pickles, pimentos and spice. Taste product to correct flavoring for salt.
5. Prepare gelatin solution using approximately 1 lb. of gelatin to 1 gal. of water. Clarified cooking broth may be used for the liquid.
6. Add gelatin solution to meat, spice, etc. Add vinegar to taste
7 Place in molds and chill overnight.
8. Vacuum package.

OK, I lied. I've tried it.

nherdboi, RE: sushi places in SD

Nobu, Solana Beach. Expensive. Best Sushi Evar.

Yen's Wok, La Jolla. Affordable, owners are family friends - chinese, japanese, korean. Yummy everyday place to eat.

Send me a message when you're in town and I'll take you to Yen's, my treat.

Clam chowdah.

It has the stench of Massachusetts liberals all over it.

Cast my vote for natto.

When I was in Japan, our hosts (who absolutely killed us with kindness) played 'what won't the americans eat'. We did very well, surviving the raw horse (surprisingly sweet) and a number of things that were staring at us as we ate them. But natto defeated us handily.

We asked them (once we washed out the taste) what had been done to these poor beans. They had difficulty coming up with the correct word, which was scary enough, but then they borrowed our dictionary, and the best word they had was "bacteria". uggggh.

Samwise, it's called fermentation; the exact same process we do with milk to get yogurt, which you'll notice is labeled "live and active cultures" next time you're at the store.

Incidentally, look up the health benefits of both yogurt and natto.

But natto is definitely an acquired taste.

2004-04-21 09:03:53 PM
I've heard American food is pretty disgusting.

2004-04-21 09:15:33 PM
I only like eating paint chips...mmmmmm.

2004-04-21 09:15:39 PM
(Didn't read all the comments)

I'll add my vote for natto. When I was in Japan I used to buy sushi at a convenience store on my way home from work. Something evil lurked in one particular package of maki.

On the other hand, there's the classic answer...

Spam in the place where you are
Spam in the trunk of my car
Spam in the place where you are
Think about nutrition, wonder why you would ever eat Spam

(paraphrased)

2004-04-21 09:15:44 PM
it is.

I have never been able to force myself to drink coffee. 46 years old and I've never had the first sip. The smell is just a real turn off. The smell of coffee brewing in the morning makes me ill. I accidently ate some coffee flavored candy once if that counts.

2004-04-21 09:19:04 PM
You folks would make Anthony Bourdain sick - and it takes alot to do that, really...

2004-04-21 09:29:11 PM
Hmm, the thought of baalut makes me think of that scene from The Critic:

"What's that smell? Ah, the eggs must have ripened. ...Wait a minute, eggs don't ripen... EGGS DON'T RIPEN!!! ...I think I'll eat at my parent's house today."

I guess I'd eat most things, so long as it isn't living at the time of serving, or wasn't technically alive yet (e.g. baalut, actual veal). Or sea urchin. Used to work with those in a lab before-- they've got way too many little buggers crawling on/in them to be edible.

Actually had sesos before (pig brains). The way it was served up looked like a greek salad with cauliflour, carrots, tomatoes, dressing, etc. Except that instead of cauliflour, it was pig brains. Really chewy, gristly, almost reminiscent of overcooked Krabmeat; not bad, but not something I'd go out of my way to order.

Mushrooms.

I can't see how a grey, slimy, rubbery fungus could possibly be edible. They stand out in food due to their dead colour, which just looks wrong and unhealthy.

Dolphin on toast.

2004-04-21 10:00:19 PM
I quite like having an iron stomach, and there's very little I wouldn't try. Sushi and Sashimi are highly addictive and tripe though kind of rubery is half decent. Vegamite is like salt with a gross smell, and the only way to really like it is on well buttered toast, and even that's a stretch. The only think I don't think I could manage is pigs feet. Chicken feet are greasy by the way..

2004-04-21 10:07:04 PM
I can't understand people that eat insects - grasshoppers, beetles, whatever. I would never eat that. I don't care if it's in a lollipop or covered in chocolate or whatever. NO WAY!

2004-04-21 10:09:02 PM
Lobster

Shrimp

If it crawls like that, it's an insect. I don't care what you call it, they're bugs. Big underwater bugs.

Living in Hawaii, we're pretty accoustomed to various ethnic foods. Here is a list of some of the things I've eaten and enjoyed:

Natto, oxtail, pig feet soup, liver, heart, head cheese, kidney, kimchee, sashimi, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, raw shrimp/crab, various fish eggs, uni, steak tartare, potted meats, vienna sausage, spam, poi, and lots of other stuff.

I have yet to try ballut and dinaguan.

I won't eat any kind of penis/balls or female genitalia, although I enjoy my wife's.

2004-04-21 10:14:34 PM
Scrapple....

First rule of eating for me-
I will not eat scrapple. I eat no food with the word CRAP in it's name.

And for all of you who put hagis.. it's actually quite good. I'm sure if you knew what was really in most of the things you eat you wouldn't eat them.

Also I hear that vegimite stuff is nasty...

Since I'm living in China now, I'm not EVEN telling you people what I've eaten. More like the things I haven't eaten. In Japan I saw horse sashimi. China has duck's heads, duck's feet, chicken's feet, fish heads, live toads, all manner of disgusting and mysterious shellfish....and the ever-popular dog meat. When eating duck's head, people pick it up by the bill and eat it like a lollipop.
