when Barry is dead at 47 from heart failure and a face shaped like Lyle Alzado I guess we'll know the truth.

Sorry, meant expert. Not "issue." I'm retarded.

There is circumstancial evidence that Bonds was using illegal performance enhancers the past few years. I won't waste time reciting the various points because it's been done to death.

The bottom line here is that he's a disgrace, to baseball and the heroes of the past.

Now, don't get me wrong - i farking hate baseball with a passion. I can't imagine a more boring game (not a sport, game) - even GOLF has more merit.

Ok, maybe curling. Curling sucks worse than baseball. But i digress.

Anyway, not liking baseball as I do, I still acknowledge the achievements of the past. Heroes like Willie Mays and Hank Aaron - these guys went out into a hostile crowd where they were nothing but "negroes in a white man's sport" and stood proud. They slammed out homer after homer, and did so amidst great threat to thier continued existance on this planet.

The fact that Bonds is not only a discourteous and sanctimonious ass has nothing to do with the fact that he brings disgrace upon the memories of these heroes by illegally enhancing his ability to hit the ball farther. The claim that steroids don't increase agility or accuracy are false - stabilizer muscles impact accuracy a great deal, and the more finely tuned these muscles are, the more accurately a man can aim (which is why they are banned, even in sports such as archery).

Bottom line, the guy's a scumball.

Oh, and whoever said "Faster bats? WTF?" - your ignorance shines like a beacon, illuminating the writing on the wall for all to see - and it says "You're a moron."

Unfortunately, I am. Although I did get to see all three games down here in Atlanta last year. That was awesome. Atlanta fans SUCK.

skylock: "The kid was the bat boy at the time, moran... blame Dusty Baker for allowing him into the dugout in the first place, if you want."

I missed that the first time. Can't believe someone tried to lay Baker's kid almost getting stomped on Bonds. Still waiting for the "Barry Bonds is the real killer of Ron and Nicole" blast...

Cardinal Good post. I think the way he holds guys like Mays and Aaron in such reverence and honor is a good indication that he wouldn't want to break their records by cheating. But I am an unabashed baseball idealist.

Bonds is a juiced up A-hole,
Ruth was a drunk,

Stadiums were bigger in Ruth's day

Pitchers didn't throw 90mph split-finger fastballs in the 20's

Baseballs today are much harder and spring off the bat today.

Players workout and train much harder today.

please let the apples, oranges comparisons continue..

"Comparing players across different eras is a futile"

Amen to that...My dad and uncles bicker about this constantly. An exaple of these conversations.

"Well if Ted Williams was batting against Roger Clemens then..."

"Well dad...thats going to be hard for him to see the ball since he's decapitated and frozen.

I feel for you Cub's fans. Every day I hear more press releases about Mark Prior that lead me to believe he is done for the season.

Just to prevent accusations of threadjacking, Bonds is an egomaniacal jerk, as well as one of the greatest ballplayers ever.

Baseball...baseball...let's see...that's that one game where everyone stands around for several hours and from time to time runs a little bit, right? I thought those guys were still on strike 'cause they only make an insane amount of money when what they really want is an incredibly insane amount of money.

"Ummm...Don Drysdale was the guy with the scoreless innings record that Hershiser went on to break in 1988, not Babe Ruth."

Thanks for the correction. Babe did have the record for a while, but I really don't know who broke it. I did remember Orel breaking someone's record

The semblance of honour and fair play between the players is what I call "chin music". When I played, we stole bases like crazy. We stole about 1 or 2 less times than we got on base (hope that makes sense). That was about average for us. But I see your point that it may be dishonorable, but nobody said a win had to be pretty. Just look at my boys, the Colorado Rockies.

I'd just like to point out that Ruth has 714 home runs AND 100 wins as a pitcher

Please go away. Find some thread about Bush to state how much you dislike politics. Jagoffs.

There are a significant amount of people who will argue that steroids, like corked bats, aren't much help either. Not saying they know what they're talking about, but it's out there. I'm not arguing with you at all. I think a lot of factors come into play here. Some say it's the bats (I notice a lot of them breaking this year, whatever that means), some will say the balls are wound tighter. The lowered pitcher mound, thinned out pitching talent. Yeah I know, stop me if you've heard this one before. Believe me, I'm not sitting in awe of the "power deluge" we're seeing here. But it makes sense that sooner or later, people would get bigger and hit it farther. Why not now? I'll throw this out there, again just for the purpose of debate, there are a lot of golfers out there who are hardly Balco specimens who hit the everlovin bejesus out of a golf ball, partly because of technological improvements, yes, but mostly because of perfect/near-perfect contact.

/not a barry fan by any stretch.

technically, Barry is innocent until proven guilty, but he is guilty in the court of public opinion. As most of us realize that perception is reality, and when 1)just about all of his former Pirate teammates (Andy Van Slyke was particularly harsh)have said that they think he is juiced, 2)(I am fairly positive I have read this, but do not have time to check on the internet) law enforcement officials have confirmed that BALCO did, in fact, mail steroids to Barry's home, and 3) the dumbass continually refuses to take any kind of drug test to prove his innocence.

In the world we live in these days (like it or not), that is pretty farkin' guilty...

I'm not going to take away from anyone's abilities to crack one over the fence but Babe Ruth lived a lot "faster" of a life then Bonds does. I'm sure if Ruth had all of the modern tech wonders that Bonds does today ( suppliments, trainers, etc) He would have gotten 1,000 home runs easily.
However no one will ever catch the Great Gretzky's record for points in either a season or career.
Hank Aarron's record will be gone in a few years I'm sure. That is if Bond's doesn't suddenly develop some sort of fluke injury which requires him to retire. Or maybe gets hit in the head with a celebratory t-shirt/ hat when he gets # 700.
What's the deal with all of this Mass Marketing BS anyway? What ever happened to the joy of playing?

Oh sorry..Crack was wearing off

Law Talking Guy: I couldn't agree more. I am a Dodger fan, and -- therefore -- I despise the Giants... but I have nothing but GOOD things to say about Barry Bonds AS A PLAYER.

From Dal: I met Bonds about 6 years ago. He was the second biggest professional arse I had the displeasure to talk to. The first was Shaq.

That explains it.

If my mother-in-law could hit a ball over the fence 666 times, I'd probably belittle her skills, too.

Steroid boy is the beneficiary of MLB trying to have stars to bolster interest in a declining children's game.

1. winking at the drugs - how much more evidence does anybody need

2. permitting nonstandard equipment - he is armored and illegally encroaching at the plate

3. umpires call strike zone differently for him - watch the game objectively, the strike zone is much smaller - the NBA is rife with star calls or non-calls by referees, other leagues are the same, so this really isn't news.

Further, other players have and do hit more home runs from steroid use, Canseco,Sosa,Giambi, and Caminetti just to name a few.

McGuire was a freak when he entered the league, hall of fame right out of the chute, even so, McGuire may have used toward the end.

Nobody is a better athlete at 35 than they are at 25.

All MLB batters are talented, records are about longevity and marginal advantage which adds up over time.

Bonds was so average when he first came into the league, that as the son of a MLB player he sought an advantage with the drugs, when the talent isn't there, cheating is how it's done.

I think we're pretty much in agreement across the board. Just the pitchers/steroids comment caught my attention. Generally, nobody but Jack McDowell is suggesting pitchers are using steroids.

Barry Bonds has already had more at bats than Ruth did yet is 48 HR shy of his home run record, Bonds has had 260 less hits, Ruth has twice as many triples and the lifetime batting averages are way off. Ruth 342 - Bonds .298.

Sure it has not been proven but try to convince me that he is not so pumped up steriods he has a salt lick in his locker.

Ruth never reached half his potiental due to being wasted his whole life.

Yeah, but neither one of them married Marilyn Monroe or Posh Spice

world citizen:

Stars almost always get the calls -- that holds in most sports (see NBA, for instance). There's a pecking order, home/away, etc. That's why it was funny when Clemens got calls against Bonds 2 weeks ago that normally would've gone the other way. But it was Clemens pitching, and the game was in Houston.

I kind of figured pitchers taking 'roids wouldn't do much for velocity, but rather to help bulk up for stamina and durability. Ultimately ironic, really.
And yeah I very well may be talking out my ass on that one so I'll politely take a factual beat-down from someone with a better idea why pitchers would juice.

2004-04-20 03:22:33 PM
It would be so sweet if The Asterisk's hamstring exploded before he hits another homer.

2004-04-20 03:23:43 PM
Actually, there are accusations of pitchers using steroids. I recently read a website that quoted someone (other than Jack McDowell) as saying that Kevin Brown was a dedicated juicer.

Steroids are technically used for repairing muscle faster. It allows weightlifters to work the same muscles day after and day, whereas everyone else has to allow them rest.

Pitchers use roids to "refresh" their arms quicker. It doesn't necessarily make them bigger (they aren't lifting weights) or allow them to throw harder, but they have added stamina.

2004-04-20 03:24:50 PM
People shouldn't compare Ruth with Bonds for the simple fact that they played in completely different eras. Put Bonds or Sosa or Big Mac up against some of the pichers back then, and im sure they would have shelled out record setting seasons to. Babe Ruth was awesome, but the average talent level was way worse than it is now. Athletes are better period. Babe Ruth as an exception in a time were most people who played the sports were not necesarily great at what they did, now, its hard to suck and play a pro sport, unless its a womans sport.....

Cardinal Good post. I think the way he holds guys like Mays and Aaron in such reverence and honor is a good indication that he wouldn't want to break their records by cheating. But I am an unabashed baseball idealist.

Using that line of reasoning, the classles way Bonds has completely disrespected and utterly trashed Babe Ruth regarding passing him on the all-time HR list only PROVES that he doesn't give a fark about cheating in order to move up the HR list.

2004-04-20 03:25:09 PM
I used to pitch (until a severe arm injury ended my "hot prospect" status at age 14), and frankly I have no idea what would be gained by juicing. 90% of pitching is from the wrist forward...the grip on the ball, the snap of the joint, and the physics of a good screwball.

Muscle ain't of much value pitching (beyond the strength required to throw a ball 60 and a half feet with decent velocity), but joint flexibility is priceless...'roids would cut down on that.

2004-04-20 03:27:49 PM
Ghost_of_Toonz: I think the argument against pitchers using steroids is generally related to the bulking up attributed to their usage, which is seen as counterproductive to the flexibility essential to good pitching form. Not sure about the Joe Rockhead points...

2004-04-20 03:29:26 PM
I think a lot of the negative perceptions of Bonds come from his off again on again war with the media .A lot of fans dont like him because of the negative press that certain members of the media perpetuate. I think until Bonds is proven guilty of using steroids I think we as sports fans should give him his props. Regardless of how you feel the man is still making history.

2004-04-20 03:29:39 PM
Am I the only one that looks at Bonds and wonders if Lucy is ever gonna let him kick that football?

2004-04-20 03:31:20 PM
Re Drysdale scoreless innings etc.

I believe Drysdale held the regular season scoreless inning streak and the Babe had the post-season (World Series only in his day) streak. And I think Hershiser broke both records in 1988.

/last gasp from Dodgers....1988
