(Newsday)   Rangel calls Iraq war a "death tax'' on minorities since nearly a quarter of deaths have been black or Hispanic, while those minorities make up only 25 percent of the population   ( divider line

Wait, they make up 25% of the population and are 25% of the casulties? That seems to be equal.

Thus, the Dumbass tag, I assume.

The submitter is right about the "25% of the population" figure--according to the 2000 census, African-Americans and Latinos make up 12 and 13 percent, respectively, of the U.S. population.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if Rangel misspoke, and had intended to say that the percentage of minorities killed in Iraq was some number higher than 25%. It sure seems that way to me from the lists of killed soldiers (with names and pictures) that I've seen, like this one, though I'm not going to take the time to count them up and figure out the percentages. But if the 25% figure is correct for the death toll, then the dumbass tag is appropriate here.

that's because god hates poor people.

The study found the race of 19.4 percent of all fatalities in which race was able to be determined was black. African Americans represent 13 percent of the U.S. population and 20 percent of all military personnel.

He also repeated his call for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to be fired, and a draft reinstituted to share the burden of the fighting across all segments of society.

"This is not shared sacrifice," he said

it's a volunteer army. it's not going to be representative of society at large. no need for a draft. it would weaken the military greatly.
2004-04-19 02:29:40 PM
I believe that the first half of all of the people to die in the war makes up 50% of all of the war fatalities
2004-04-19 02:52:53 PM
Jules_Winnfield That is an outrage. Something must be done!

Maybe Iraqis don't like blacks or Hispanics?

Don't worry guys there won't be any more deaths, remember that the war is over:

This wouldn't have happened if we hadn't integrated the Army in the first damned place.
2004-04-19 02:55:25 PM
In Iraq, I think the only race at this point that will not suffer casualties are the racing Spanish soldiers being called back home.
2004-04-19 02:55:27 PM
I thought most people who have died so far were Iraqi??
2004-04-19 02:55:40 PM
good headline
2004-04-19 02:56:28 PM
Even if this had any merit, and minorities and the poor are being killed in disproportionate numbers - so what. This is a volunteer military, they knew the potential risks when they signed up. And don't give me that shiat about joining up because they were poor, they could've just as easily flipped burgers or cut grass.
2004-04-19 02:56:38 PM
Then I guess we should kick the minorities out of the military.
2004-04-19 02:56:39 PM
Rep. Charles Rangel branded the Iraqi war a "death tax" on America's poor and minorities in a speech Thursday criticizing the Bush administration's foreign policy.

So what if your one of America's poor minorities? Do we save the trouble of sending you over seas and just shoot you in the recruiters office?
2004-04-19 02:56:42 PM
alboit's a volunteer army. it's not going to be representative of society at large. no need for a draft. it would weaken the military greatly

It would also weaken the resolve of Americans supporting the war.

DougTanner: the war is over. do you see any army vs army type fighting? or do you see terrorist type plotting and actions? you can hate bush, but please, no need be sarcastic about the lives of men and women who died while fighting to liberate a country.

It reminds me of when they were people living near O'hare were complaining about the noise from the airport. One person said that the noise caused low birth-wieghts because in neighborhoods surrounding the airport, 35% of babies born were below the average brith-weight.

the headline submitter is a fudger...yes the reporter paraphrases Rangel mentioning minorities but his claim is that the poor bear most of the war burden and a disproportionate percentage of minorities are poor. Those two facts of indisputedable.

Are we supposed to believe that a bunch of rich white kids are out there dyin for this war?

Rangel: "They come from communities with the highest unemployment, communities with the lowest wage."

Interesting that its the politician complaining and not the soldiers.

Last time I checked, the military was voluntary. Anybody who's paid attention to world events the last 10 years should've known going in that there was a chance of war.

Rangel's energies would be better spent looking at why the communities he refers to have the highest unemployment with the lowest wage and rectifying that problem.

100% of all the casualties in Iraq are a result of Bush's lies.
2004-04-19 03:01:18 PM
What nobody can get their heads wrapped around is a very simple fact.
More blacks and hispanics join the US military and become infantry than whites.
OF COURSE when casualties start to pile up there will be more dead blacks and hispanics.
It's not farking rocket science.

Here is a transcript of Rangel's speech and the Q&A that followed, via his House website.

A quote from Rangel's speech:

And if you take a look and try to find out, "Who are these individuals that find themselves liable for the tax?" what have they got in common? Well, my dear friend, the congressman from Missouri, Ike Skelton, he did some research of those people who were killed in action. And he finds that 46 percent of them come from rural areas, from towns and countries that have less than 20,000 people in population.

And we also have done some research with the Department of Defense. And we have found that 26 percent of those killed in action are either African-American or Hispanics.
And more and more, we find that immigrants, people who are trying to get a step up economically and in life in this country, find themselves among those who pay this very heavy tax.

They come from communities with the highest unemployment. Communities with the lowest possible wage. Are they patriots? I would think they are, Mr. President. Are they volunteering to liberate Iraq? I think not. Are they seeking a better way of life, as I did in 1948 and my brother before me? You bet your life they are.

the war is over. do you see any army vs army type fighting? or do you see terrorist type plotting and actions?

This *is* war, dude. It's guerrilla war, but that's how war is going to be from now on because no two countries with decent armies will dare fight each other. Bush can repeat all he wants that the war is over, but he's wrong and you're wrong too. Terrorism is a war tactic just like any other.

How about some perspective here?
2004-04-19 03:03:56 PM
i've always wondered why people hate the rich so much. i'm from a middle class family and though money is tight at times, i can say we've never had it "bad". people complain and complain at all the rich get. well tell me: whats the point of working hard towards being rich, or just flat out being rich if it doesn't get you any benifits? why be rich if your kids can't benifit from it? isn't this the whole point in a capitalist society? to work to be rich so you get all the spoofs?

I agree with flubby. Again, I don't have the statistics handy, but my understanding is that a very high percentage of people with military jobs that are risky (ie: combat), are lower-income.

Iraq may be a slightly different scenario, though, because I understand that a lot of reservists got called up into active service. I'm not American, so this is just a guess, but it seems to me that reservists tend to be a lot more likely to be middle class family guys.

To another point, though- You're far more likely to die in Iraq if you're Iraqi. So far, Iraqis are dying at about a 50:1 ratio compared to Americans, a large percentage of which are civilians. While I'm certain that everyone has their own judgment on this, I do ask Americans to consider this: How many of those 25,000 dead Iraqis have you seen on your TV screen? How does that impact, or not impact, your impression of your involvement there? Do you feel that you're seeing the complete picture?

I ask, because you are the only one's that can ultimately hold your government accountable for it's foreign policy, for better or worse. Vote how you must, but vote knowingly.

Do you have any facts to back that up? One fact? Because I'm willing to allow that to get my head wrapped around that if you can provide some sort of substantiation of it.

It's not rocket science, but it's not cosmic science either.

Perhaps rich white kids should go to Iraq during university holidays instead of flipping burgers or manning a checkout. Just dump them in the desert, give them a gun and tell them to act like they're playing UT2k4 Onslaught.
