One of our EMinds regulars is gonna be real disappointed that Montreal forced a Game 7.

And I'M disappointed that Vancouver did. I want Calgary to knock those bastards out of the playoffs, 'cos I don't want Colorado to have to play them again. Too much bad blood to play again this year.

/and I'd rather not face the Red Wings till the conference finals, either
//GO AVS! STANLEY CUP, BABY! YEAH!

Kovalev jokes from WEEI this week:

Hmm, I didn't know Alexei was Alice in French.

Wow, the French can even get Russians to surrender.

It's not blown out of proportion...that's how big of a deal it is in Quebec. Like I said, the further west you get, the less you really even know about it. Therein lies the problem...Quebec has a problem, and if the rest of the country even manages to hear of it, they scarcely care if they possibly understand it.

Revolution

Separatism is laden with problems, of course, but it's a cost that many in Quebec are willing to pay. I'm not really sure they owe Canada money. When you bribe someone, it's not a loan is it? They threaten, Ottawa bribes with BC and Alberta's money. Yay transfer payments! And Quebec still overspends, and they have provincial income tax.

The issue of the borders is another thing...they won't care. Just as Europeans can travel in the EU zone, you don't see France protecting it's borders from Switzerland. Even still, many legal scholars believe that if Quebec left the confederation, between 75-90% of the territory would be returned to the Native Americans or the Crown...since Canada, unlike the USA does not own the land they reside on. It exists through treaty. If Quebec is no longer part of Canada, the validity of the treaty is brought into question. Interesting!

As far as what Quebec calls itself...no, it has no illusions of being bilingual...101 was about French 1st. You can have English, but Quebec gets an exemption. And speaking of that, why Canada would want Quebec to have a built-in veto for everything is beyond me. And really, Canadians can complain about anglophones being 2nd class citizens in Quebec when francophones in northern Ontario are on par with the English-only speakers of Toronto. Ontario doesn't do a great job of being bilingual either.

I would also remind you that Montreal is hardly indicative of Quebec. Montreal has a lot of anglos, as well as immigrants who won't learn French. The rest of Quebec is very mono-lingual. It's in Montreal's best interest to support the Federalist party line. The francophone is overwhelmed there these days.

Parti Quebec, aka BLOC QUEBEC

Very different.

Oh hell no. FLQ, freaking TERRORISTS spawned the political movement. Rene Levesque was a Liberal and he left to form Parti Quebec. Bloc is simply the PQ getting into the PC. Bouchard and Parizeau are cut from the same separatist cloth, it's just that Bouchard is not as left-leaning. Even though Bouchard is considered "conservative" by Quebec's standards, he's left...Liberal left, whereas PQ is now NDP left. They aren't "tax and spend", they are "tax, tax, spend, spend, spend, ask for money from Ottawa and spend, spend, make impossible promises and spend some more."

Now there's left... and than there's LEFT.

As we've said...but I am reminded of the all-time funniest thing ever said to me on FARK:

"The BC Liberals are conservatives"

Wow. Not left enough for ya? LOL...yeah, what are the Alliance, fascists? I guess the NDP are normal centrists, LOL!!!

The point I'm making, while I appreciate what you're saying about the slight differences between PQ and Bloc is that rhiannon should not be fooled into thinking they are separatists and their platforms do not have Canada's interest in mind unless it's in Quebec's interest as well.

Lastly, I would point out that Brian Mulroney, a CONSERVATIVE introduced the GST to Canada. He makes Bill Clinton look like Ronald Reagan.

Bill_Wick's_Friend

well let's just say i'd be holding my nose a lot less when i vote this fall.

The very 1st time I went to BC, I walked down in front of the Museum. I was handed a communist manifesto, and I was handed a newsletter about BC independence. I tell you, it really changed my entire outlook on Canada and BC. I think the biggest change that BC'ers could make is to find someone who would run for PM on the platform that "we get back what we give" meaning that BC will not take in less than they pay out in taxes. Life in general would be a hell of a lot better.

Personally, I want to be an MP in the East Hastings riding and run as Parti Quebec. People would say "WTF?" and I would say "vote for me, I will make Quebec soveriegn, and then we will have money for needles, tent cities, and all that other wacked out crap that the local vagrants want." Besides...you ever talk to these people? None of them are from BC anyway, they all come here from the east cuz of the weather. If anything, they should be compensating BC for taking care of their homelessness problems for them!

The Dark One

but I don't see the sponsorship scandal being a 'paul martin' thing. The Parti Quebecois pulled crap way worse on the night of the referendum.

Martin handled it terribly, and he's the current leader of the Liberals. Martin was also culpable in the money laundering. Do a Google News search and read up on it. As far as what PQ pulled...well, it was in response to what Ottawa was doing. There never was a chance for a fair election.

Ishkur

I think we can ALL agree that Canada does not need Toronto.

Yeah, but the USA don't want it, cuz we got enough Americans already...

That's the exact same thing I tought. Plus, it beats diving into the either seperatist/Canada vs. US flamewar that ensues with every post that is remotely Canadian.

"which was just a chipped vertebrae, not a broken neck"

im sorry, but anything that F's with the neck/spinal cord area is sickingly dirty.

He pushed him from behind, and rode him down...if thats not a thoroughly illegal hit than i dont know what is.

just a chipped vertabrea....do you even know how sensitive the neck area is?...how thin those bones actually are? if brtuzzi weighed 10 more lbs, his vertabrea could very well have shattered, leaving moore paralyzed for life.

i suppose you think mcsorley is absolved from that time where he thought he was barry bonds, right

If this game goes to 2OT I'm gonna have to start drinking

Are you kidding me? You're actually going to watch part of a hockey game sober? I'm already into the second one by the time they drop the puck.

/not a hockey fan, but a Bostonian, so GO BRUINS!

To those still whining that Ribeiro is a diver.

What happened is he got a 'nerve lock' which means that for a couple of minutes his nerves on his right shoulder were locked.

This isn't an injury, true, but it hurts as hell as long as it's locked and then it's like nothing happened, thus his reaction.

Luckily, people like renko are in the minority. The NHL league office certainly didn't think Moore got what was coming to him. Hell, Bertuzzi's water works during his apologetic press conference tells me even Todd doesn't think Moore had it coming. See, unlike Ol Time Hockey torch-bearers, such as renko, real NHL players/owners and officials know what such stupid acts do to the casual fan base, it drives them away. Which mean less dollars for everyone involved. They're not stupid. They all want to share a larger piece of a ever growing revenue pie.

I have no problem with self-enforcing in hockey (Funny that it isn't needed in the playoffs as much, nor in the Olympics, nor at the college level, but I digress). I'd even agree with doing away with the instigator rule. But for christ sakes, don't wait until 2 games later, in the safety of your own building, down by 5 or 6 goals, after the guy had already answered the bell once, to exact 'justice', by sucker-punching the guy in the back of the head. Especially after going public with words like 'Bounty on his head'. That's cowardly not to mention stupid. If justice was indeed needed, it should have been dealt out immediately.

Oh, and next time, maybe Naslund will keep his head up. This ain't the Ice Follies.

Flames should have won that game. Well, I mean, they probably shouldn't have, given they were down 4-0, but they should have given their chances in overtime. But those long overtimes are always pretty much a coin flip chance anyway.

Quite the thread.

Ribeiro has NHL skills, but junior attitude. So I understand you Bruins fans and your growling. But sadly, your team is playing lethargic-like (save for one or two players), and I just don't see it working out for you.

Oh, and Montreal is (obviously) a smaller team overall, so when you poke at them with your bear sticks, it hurts them just a little more than you'd think. Hence the tears and GIJoe band-aids.

Oh yeah, and Langdon scoring after a 3+ year drought? Awesome. That guy is soooooo fricking hilarious. The kinda guy that makes a lockerroom work.

I was trying to be unbiased, but it just ain't working out.
Go Habs.

I contend that the chipped vertebrae were a direct result of the Avs players piling on top of Bert and Moore. In the replays, Bertuzzi realized that Moore was hurt and was trying to shield him from the extra weight. Stupid Bettman caving in to American media. Riddle me this - who stood to gain the most from Bertuzii being handed an ultra long suspension? *gasp* surely not the Avs!

Yeah, sorry about that. I was surprised that no one had the name when I registered. I didn't notice you until afterwards. If it really bothers you let me know, I'll change.

sadly enough i didn't know hockey was still on after they play like 200 games a season which really has no ending. sort of like most pro sports.

baseball teams play 162 games a year, why? (other than money) would you play 162 games of baseball?

seems like the only sport that doesn't play a ton of games is when football season is around. We need more football, fark baseball, basketball and hockey.

2004-04-18 10:25:57 PM
this wont get seen, but baseball(7 months) actually has a shorter claendar season than hockey(10), basketball(9-10), nascar(10 months).
