2001-12-31 06:04:51 PM
The backstory:

Jaxomlotus and I are walking around downtown NYC. He asks a cop to get in a picture with us. Just before the picture is taken, some woman we don't know and have never seen before jumps in. Then Jaxomlotus and I went to drink beer after sneaking into ground zero

2001-12-31 07:59:56 PM
Any FAQ availaible? Reccomended image size guidelines, what constitutes inappropriate material, etc?
2001-12-31 08:01:43 PM
Twig I'm in the process of writing one. It will be up by midnight. For now don't worry. The system will handle anything you upload and make sure it's a good size.
2001-12-31 08:32:08 PM
i'm curious what users think of the system. Likes, dislikes, recommendations? How does this compare to other photoshopping boards?
2001-12-31 09:04:13 PM

Just wondering, is this new site run by the same people that run fark? or is it a spin off like
This probably seems like a stupid question, but i just couldnt find it anywhere on their site.
2001-12-31 09:11:27 PM
Third time's a charm, went right through that time....
2001-12-31 09:38:14 PM
Jax: Nice site, Bro. As you know, I live to Photoshop. Now my old lady can hate you and Drew for taking up all my time.
2001-12-31 09:46:26 PM
just a try
2001-12-31 09:48:10 PM
Gpshunter......a help section that explains it all will be available on the site tomorrow. Drew is a friend of mine and a big help in getting this site off the ground. is a spinoff of Fark? It seemed to be exactly like it but I didn't realize that.

Worth1000 has many, many features that make it different and better for photoshopping than other messageboard photoshopping contests, in that it was a system built around posting images, instead of a system built around a linear message boards. In other words, users don't need to know HTML, have a separate FTP site and can just upload their images directly to the site. It's cool stuff. That's not to put down Fark, b3ta or Those are all great sites. It's just to say that from a technical standpoint Worth1000 was built better for photoshop listings. And of course it's the community that makes a site what it is, which hopefully will develop around the new system.

E.Twig.......we're having server issues goddamn it. It's not related to Fark posting a link to us though. Some kind of New Year's Eve virus according to tech support.
2001-12-31 09:59:15 PM
New Year's Eve virus? No offense but I think somebody is blowing smoke up your ass Jax. I work tech support for an isp and I havn't heard of any New Year's Eve virus, but then again, I did leave early today. =)

It seems like a sophisticated site... I like that the images are being hosted from it.

I like that we can make comments that are associated with each entry.

I like the idea of the thumbnails in principle (because of the download time) but I found myself not looking at most of the submissions. Only the ones that seemed like they might be good by the caption or large features. Subtle tricks will slip under the radar, I fear.

I also wonder when you'll start charging to use the site, because that will take some of the fun out of it.

Jax: If possible, explain in laymen's terms about uploading "high quality" pics onto your site. I read the FAQ, but I'm still a little unclear.

Are the uploaded photos put into a pool for all to use? Just me? Do we get 'credits' for each upload?

I'm not a moron really, just a little,,,ahem,,,under the weather tonight. All things considered, the site looks and runs great. A perfect compliment to my stand-by Fark. They will compliment each other nicely whether intentional or not.
2001-12-31 11:31:59 PM

i'll never charge to use the site. When contests cost "credits" (which can be bought with money) to enter, those credits go into the jackpot pool which are then awarded to the contest winner. Sort of like photoshop poker. The winner can then redeem his winnings back for cash. There will still always be free contests for all to use, but the added element of playing for $$ should bring this to a whole new element.

I agree with your assesment of the thumbloads tending to make subtleties not get clicked on, but that's the tradeoff for a more normalized download time. For those of us who just want to click through each photo, you can use the arrow navigation on the image entry page to move from pic to pic without using the thumbnails.

Uploaded photos to the image library don't award the user one credit anymore (they use to) as this would discourage users from paying for credits (which would then leave me paying the jackpot out of pocket). Uploaded photos are simply a communal tool for all members to use and share. Nothing more, nothimng less.

I wonder if this will mean less PS Contests on Fark to encourage more people to go to Worth1000. It's a conspiracy damnit! Oh, well.

Nice site. Key word: classy. Though, I would just assume forgetting the ca$h prizes if it meant getting rid of that god awfully confusing credit thingy. I don't know, it might be good. I should probably read the 'help' part again.
2002-01-01 12:18:07 AM
i promise the credits thing will be VERY simple to understand once the help section is done :)
2002-01-01 12:30:57 AM
happy new years by the way!

What keeps a person from voting on themselves repeatedly, or multiple accounts?
Nice site by the way, no problem posting, it was smooth operation.
2002-01-01 01:09:37 AM
Cheesed, multiple account voting will work, but the mods are alerted when two ip addresses that are the same (but under different account names) appear in the voting. In cases where it makes a difference we'll delete the multiple votes. In this first contest I found one cheater but he was so far behind it didn't matter.

The other HUGE difference is that voting is weighted. A user with 0 credits who votes only adds 1 point to the image score whereas a user who has 500 credits adds 5 points to the user score with each vote. This ensures that even if a user in a computer lab has different accounts and is using different account names will only add a single vote to the image when cheating. This will be drowned out by the votes going to actual photos done by users with many credits (more experienced users).

Eh, wah yah gonna do?

On cop shows and films, what is the phrase you here on police radio whenever it's in background noise? They have it on the end of NYPD Blue, and I heard it on Naked Gun, and you here it when you deploy a police-unit on Sim-City 3000. But what are they saying? I need to know.......

Jackie Gleason for life!

Is it just me... doesn't Drew look like he's 'shopped into the original?
2002-01-01 11:12:30 AM
i assure you that Drew was not shopped into the original. i got more photos to prove it
