Really?  Really??? Get back to me when someone beats the shiat out of you for the simple act of using the goddamn bathroom.  I don't hate you.  But some of the things you say about people like me is definitely hateful.

When a pressure group gradually takes over the government of a great nation, then bitterly and self-righteously complains about being sidelined and persecuted, the rest of us might become a bit annoyed at them.

You don't even have to use a bathroom. Just ... be gay.  Or brown. Or Shia LaBeouf's twin.  The simple act of being can get some people beaten to a pulp.  For any Christian to talk the kind of gag-inducing sulfurious shiat as that jackass, I have only one thing to say: THAT is why you are hated.

The dude in back looks like he is calculating how Jesusy he has to be in order to score some church poon.

It's always interesting how the more outwardly religious a person is the more be-a-dick-to-everyone-around-them people they are.  That may not be everyone of them but I've encountered enough of them in my life to be weary of anyone who always works Jesus, righteousness, morality, etc. into everyday conversations.

Evangelicals are hated. They are just made fun of for their stupid beliefs because they have more hypocrisy then most other religions. And like the VAST majority of American religious people pick and chose which tenets to follow.

I guess if you make fun of them for their nonsense they internalize that as hatred. Its not, its pity.

"I never thought we'd be in the place we are today. I never thought that the values I've held my whole life would bring us to a point where we were alienated or suppressed."

Having been raised in an evangelical church, I can tell you that they love this kinda shiat with a burning passion. They are in essence a bunch of drama queens and their absolutely favorite thing to get off on is their persecution fantasies. Mind you, most of them have absolutely no idea what actual persecution would even look like. As one of the most privileged groups in human history, they've never in their life even come close to being persecuted. But for some reason, they love to imagine they are.

Having grown up in the bible belt, I have to say that up until I was 18 or so it was definitely the conservative christians in my life that wanted to tell me the words I could and couldn't use, and try to use their narrow outlook, and backward ways to justify hypocrisy.

One of the reasons I studied argumentation and rhetoric, writing, and worked in empirical methodology was in order to be able to define the world for myself, rationally, and use the words I want to without others' hangups being put on me.

Since I've been an adult it has been the Critical Race Theory nitwits and their sjw twins in the Feminist community that have assumed the role the jackass conservative christians previously held.

Not surprising because these two groups act the same in that they ALWAYS go for censorship over addressing criticism of their BS.

What words am I allowed to say are now subjective to my race and gender... Challenge that and get ready for the screaming, campus harpies to try and censor you because all of the sudden "speech = violence." "Check your privilege" and "Read your Bible" have the exact same ring in my ear. DO AS I COMMAND AND DON'T TALK BACK OR THINK FOR YOURSELF!

The kind of ribald comedy I enjoy, like Patton Oswalt, is now seen as a type of aggression and my cis-gender terminology is offensive... Women's studies majors and gender studies major telling the people who studied writing how to write and what to say... Talk about the turd wagging the dog.

One of the main reasons I'm a liberal is because I'm against censorship, social or governmental, and I'm pro-discourse and pro-inquiry.

To be honest, after dealing with the race-baiting, gender baiting dumbasses on the left and the butthurt, holier than thou Christians on the right. It's no wonder people who have a simpler decision matrix than myself want to vote for someone who "just says it like it is."

Personally, I want both the authoritarian right and the authoritarian left to go fark themselves with rusty pole, but because we need these morons in the party and because it's socially popular you'll see Clinton pander to the "privilege" crowd and Trump pander to the Christian crowd when these two groups should be expelled from US politics.

God forbid you say anything about the hedonist, nihilist lifestyle of gays or the mental aberation that is transexualism, or ANY minority group, including murderous muslims who preach killing in their mosques, but it's fine to demonize Christians for believing and living precepts that were perfectly acceptable for people like ultra-leftists hillary and obama 5 years ago, and thousands of years before that.

They don't actually feel hated...
Matthew 10:22
"You will be hated by everyone because of me..."

So this isn't a declaration, it is more like a validation that they are doing things right.
I liken it to a person that says they are in love but are really just in love with the idea of being in love.

The trend is reflected in the highest reaches of public life. The US Supreme Court is now composed completely of Jews and Roman Catholics. In the 2012 presidential election, the Republican nominees were a Mormon, Mitt Romney, and a Catholic, Paul Ryan.

Sounds like there are plenty of Christians in charge... oh, wait... I forgot. Those aren't the right kind of Christians. Again - you reap what you sow. If you keep excluding people from your group for stupid reasons (e.g. they don't pray the same way you  do), pretty soon you'll find you're not a majority, anymore.

But overall? Take a break from nailing yourselves up on that cross and open your eyes, fundies. You've got half of 'murca living under the darkness of jesus-sharia, your churches don't pay taxes, and you're basically legally allowed to oppress people as long as it's part of your "sincerely held beliefs."

Came here to say pretty much the same thing except:

Beaten, denied service, or persecuted (like real persecution, you know higher rates of arrests, longer prison sentences for the same crimes, going to prison while other people just get suspended), getting paid less, less job opportunities, and just general contempt based on your race, sex, sexual orientation, or religion.... Than you'll know what hate is.

Bit I do hate them, but it's not the type of hate they're claiming, is disgust, and it's not all of them.  It's these that play the pity party on themselves while espousing hate.  There are decent evangelicals, but I guess other hardline evangelicals wouldn't consider them evangelical, kinda like ISIS doesn't consider other sects of the same religion as practicing.

Either way, part of me hopes their is a higher power and there is a rapture, so when they're all being punished in hell they can watch what dickheads they were while texting tortured.

Bullshiat.  You're not oppressed.  I don't hate based on your religion.   But you sorely try my patience when you sanctimoniously use your religion as an excuse to mind other folks' business and/or make them unhappy.  That is one thing that really gets me angry.  So, if you want me to like you and respect you, it's not hard.  Jesus told you how.

To be fair, he's not completely wrong. I don't "hate" Christians (or more specifically Evangelical Christians), but I don't like them either. However the only reason I don't like them is that they treat me poorly (because I'm an atheist) and other people (because they're homosexual, Muslim, transgender, etc) poorly. Even going so far as to try to get their bigotry enshrined in laws and constitutions. If they would just mind their own farking business and stop trying to fark over anyone that has made their "list", I wouldn't give two shiats about whether or not they were Evangelical Christian. But they don't mind their own business. They haven't stopped trying to fark people over. They haven't refrained from treating people poorly. So I don't like them at all.

I know it might seem like I hate them, but I don't. Hate is a word I reserve for extreme circumstances. If I hate something, I want it obliterated, gone, buried, never to return... I don't want Evangelical Christians or Christians in general to be obliterated, etc. I just want them to mind their own farking business, to stop farking with people, and stop trying to make laws out of their bullshiat.

So the Republicans put up a Mormon and a Catholic back in 2012 - well, you didn't have to vote for them if you wanted an evangelical Protestant Christian ticket. Likewise, you had (well at least before Scalia died) 4/9 conservative justices who are Catholic and made decisions that you were probably 97% in favor with, but just because their doctrine in their faith is different, you want to cry about persecution?

And you talk about liberals and their safe spaces.

hate != disagree with and oppose politically

Hate is an irrational emotion, usually brought about by irrational beliefs and fears.  It frequently leads to violence to further its ends.  Disagreement is merely drawing different conclusions from the data at hand.  Opposing politically means acting within the public arena to try to prevent your agenda from becoming policy.  Violence is not an acceptable means of political opposition.

Dear Evangelical Christians,

Maybe everyone would hate you less if you didn't use your religion to hide behind as an excuse to be a bigot and a homophobe. Anything the bible says on any subject was pre-empted by what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. Please remember the part about "Do unto others ..." and remember that it's the "Golden Rule" for a reason. And try not to be such self-righteous douchecanoes.

To get someone to condemn asinine religious-motivated behavior by Christians and Muslims (or anyone else) seems pretty rare. Some think it's okay if Christians do it since they "belong here", and others think it's bigoted to hold Muslims to our standards, even if they live in our nations.

No, it's because their "leaders" and Fox News tell them that they're persecuted. If they weren't told on a daily basis in various ways that Christians are persecuted, they'd go about their lives like the rest of us. They would see, the way the rest of us see, that "persecuted" means a rather specific thing that does not apply to Christians in America today. Just like none of them cared about abortion until the early 1980s.

thorpe: "The US Supreme Court is now composed completely of Jews and Roman Catholics. In the 2012 presidential election, the Republican nominees were a Mormon, Mitt Romney, and a Catholic, Paul Ryan.

"We've lost our home field advantage," Stetzer said." .

And there it is, the real reason for this relentless far-right Christian wailing and gnashing.

For the full-time marketers of far-right Christianity, i.e. Tony Perkins, Phyllis Schlafly, Franklin Graham and every goddamn Creationist-hawking sideshow barker in America, it's about the loss of previously unchallenged, unquestioned, unbridled power and control of American society, education, sex and law.

Angry, selfish, greedy, cruel conservative Christians aren't loathed because they claim to love Jesus.  They're despised because they also claim only they love their children, only they love this country, only they support the troops, only they work for a living, only they have morals.

edmo: Evangelicals are the most selfish people I know: all they care about is getting into heaven and not one other thing.

Evangelical Protestant policy is that they ALL get into heaven; all it requires is accepting Jesus as your lord and savior.  After you say the magic words, the only crime that voids that ticket to heaven is denying the Holy Ghost.

Part of Christian arrogance comes from successfully selling the idea that just the act of "believing," just having "faith" is by itself a brave and noble deed.

I don't hate them, but I fear the impact they have on society.

What I do feel is sorry for them, and their willful ignorance.

Hate and persecution are strong words.  Can't we all agree that both the evangelical "NOTW" types and the rest of this world would be better served if the poor persecuted evangelicals imminentized their personal eschaton?

Well, if you were actually Christian, I guess your logic would be valid, but the crap you're espousing has nothing to do with Jesus, so suck it.

Because three or more people bonded by contract forms a corporation? Also, ironically, you need three to start a church. As far as legal status anyway.

It depends on what type of corporation. I've been part of several corporations, (LLCs and others) for specific projects, think film, funding building projects, etc. So far I've been in projects that lasted a year, if only to have that ONE meeting, hold votes, etc...

Our laws and regulations are designed around couples, not larger groups. There's issues about divorce and marital property and inheritance and survivorship and power of attorney. Gay marriage, relatively speaking, was cake, because it just turned 'husband and wife' into 'husband and husband' or 'wife and wife'. There's a lot more configurations of poly groups out there. (If you have a poly group that's, say, two husbands married to one wife, if she dies, are the husbands still married to each other? Will they be forced through divorce proceedings to sort out the estate?)

We don't have much historical precedent in dealing with it, either, as most of our cultural history of polygamy is about patriarchs with multiple near-chattel wives. (I'm talking in the Abrahamic traditions here; it's possible that other cultures have better models here.)

I'm not saying it's wrong - I think it'd be a great thing to let poly groups get that legal protection and support. But it's not a trivial change.

oh don't even get me started on the LGBT hate, fear and lies that evangelicals push on an almost daily basis.  not a week goes by when Dobson or someone like him goes on a rant about how LGBT folks are going to bring the end times, or that god will smite the country because gay people can now have fabulous weddings.

nobody likes evangelicals because they tend to push a message that is hateful at best and severely and deliberately misinformed at worst.  If I had wanted to build an organization to mock the christian god and all he stood for, I would have ultimately ended up with something that looked a LOT like evangelical christanity does right now.

Losing your influence and majority is not suppression.  It just means that people are no longer willing to follow your hate and need to control how other people live.  The fact that a good majority of people have decided that your oppression of others is not the right path should tell you that something's wrong, but I know it won't.

Slightly OT, but I'd really like to see what religion(s) will look like in the far-future*. As a solo Witch I do not belong to any group, but I am religious.

I believe that 'religion' is between the individual and the great mystery of existence.  Science will never be able to explain existence itself, the fact that we are, beingness - 'to be' as a verb.  Any explanation or none at all should only be between the Individual and G*d (spelt mysteriously on purpose, because it is and will always be a mystery.)

Organised Religion is the problem! Where another group, person or theory gets inbetween the Individual and the Unknown, and attempts to define the Undefinable.  Oh I have no problem with people who have similar beliefs combining together, to study, worship, have fun, share, etc. - just don't let any 'authority' distort or attempt to define in stone the answers.

My husband's uncle's ex-wife was like that. Total whackjob and her preferred manifestation of her mental illness was religion. She thought Harry Potter was a tool of Satan and that Satan's minions (the government, b/c Obama was the antichrist) were watching us through our TVs and brainwashing us to love the Devil. When I said I'd read them she literally took a huge step away and told me she'd pray for my soul. Guess it's a good thing I never told her I was an atheist!

The US is, BY LAW, NOT a Christian nation, it's secular.

Treaty of Tripoli (remember "to the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Hymn?), negotiated
under President George Farkin' Washington, and approved by the Senate in
->1797<- which included some of the Founding Fathers, and signed by

If we can round this up to members of ANY aggressive religion, I'll sign.

- use whatever bathroom you want, just keep it neat and clean
- marry whoever you want, one to a customer and be the best spouse you know how to be to them

There.  Was that so hard?

I'm genuinely curious... why? If you take religion out of the picture, what reason do you have left to practice "one to a customer"?

Because three or more people bonded by contract forms a corporation? Also, ironically, you need three to start a church. As far as legal status anyway.

Well, in the case in point both the CEO and CFO were women (it was a small business and older women, so don't get too excited) soooo... the only balls touching each other were my own.

Funny that they act like religion is an immutable attribute (it's not) and not an opt-in experience they can opt-out of later (which it completely is).

Or white rapists who swim really fast.

I misread that as "white racists who swim really fast" and immediately thought of South Texas.

This feels weird coming from you given the way you hack into some people's hobbies that are quite benign compared to evangalists.

bigdog1960: Evangelicals give christians a bad name

Evangelicals of any group give their group a bad name.  Hence why everyone's pissed at Microsoft about Windows 10 and why nobody but true believers do more than dabble with Apple shiat before realizing that's a dangerous rabbit hole and back out.

Agrees.

I was going to say something witty about not spotting a church in Zootopia, but then I was like, "I didn't see one because I wasn't looking for one," which seems to go for a lot in that movie.  Given some other character parallels to Robin Hood, I'll be looking for a churchmouse priest next time I sit down and watch it...

It's funny because Jews were the moneylenders then and now.

That's weird, most of the folks I know in banking here have relatives running casinos.  They're not athiest, but they're not abrahamic either.

I've started corproations before...and if you're trying to claim I'm three people, that's strangely weirdly similar to the holy trinity in Christianity...

camaroash: I'd live in the heart of Mormon central any day (oh wait, I do) versus the Bile Belt (lucky typo).

Ugh.  Moved out of Portland because I really got fed up with the Mormon Belt's bullcrap.  Granted, not near as intense as it is in SLC, but it's still pretty whitewashed and wingnutty from there north and west until you hit ocean or the north end of the Okanagan.  Which sucks, beautiful scenery if you can avoid the prevailing pervasive religious, ethnic and orientation-based bigotry in the region.

camaroash: My first exposure to that brand of insanity came in 2001 in Littleton, Colorado (as in Columbine) where some hag from Tulsa, Oklahoma got farking evil about Harry Potter, a book series for kids.  I had never seen anything like that before, nor since.

Tulsa and Oklahoma aren't really Bible Belt per se.  Certainly the outer fringe (enough that the evangelical churches and weird billboards aren't unexpected, but they still stand out as being a bizarre spectacle), and sure, ORU likes to call itself the buckle of the bible belt, but that's their own fenced off island where they can insulate themselves from the rest of the city.  Sure, their influence is a big part of why anything above 3.2%ABW has to be sold in a liquor store or bar, and no legal marijuana.  But c'mon, you can't get kicked out of a night club without sliding past two bars and a casino on the way out, the largest and best attended parade in the city is Tulsa Pride, and New Years, Halloween and Mardi Gras in this city right out in the streets in the city could make the most hedonistic people feel a little bit prude.  Who knows what goes on in the private clubs for the 1%ers here, but considering Tulsa's ties to places that both have good drugs and oil, I'm guessing cocaine is probably a big factor behind those closed doors...
