Lee Seigel, Television Critic of The New Republic, now there's a high prestige job!

2004-04-12 12:57:54 PM
What a jackass. That article just annoyed me.

2004-04-12 12:59:08 PM
but shorter.

and more murderous. jon stewart only killed beth littleford.

2004-04-12 12:59:41 PM
I can see what he's saying, but Stalin doesn't have Jon's delivery and sense of timing.

/Stalin had captive audience

2004-04-12 01:03:00 PM
one of the dumbest things i've ever read.

2004-04-12 01:11:46 PM
I liked that. I really like that. I love reading the New FascistRepublic.

Sig Freud!

I'd like to read this article, because I currently feel a desire to be outraged by the stupidity of the far right, and by doing so feel righteous and subconsciously superior; my only problem is the link isn't working. Anyone else having this problem?

Someone must have had a big-ass serving of Haterade before sitting down at the old IBM Selectric...

Now, as a Serious Citizen, I think Clarke's charges against the Bush administration are wholly credible, I think the administration's response to him is wholly scurrilous, and I hope a thousand Clarkes bloom and drive the insolent near-sociopaths who currently run the country out to sea and over to Iraq, where they should open a department store and stay forever.

This is the voice of the far right? Now I'm very confused...

2004-04-12 01:36:18 PM
I can't wait for this to become a left/right thing.

But seriously, this guy whines like a little biatch. As Stewart's ratings keep climbing, this guy says he's patently not funny. Sorry, chief, but YOU don't find him funny. Don't waste our time telling us why we shouldn't find him funny either.

2004-04-12 01:36:36 PM
Surprisingly, the author expresses displeasure with the current administration AND with John Stewart.

Is such a thing possible?

2004-04-12 01:37:43 PM
Jon Stewart is funny and The Daily Show is funny.

'nuff said

You do realize that one can think in a more complex fashion than the pure black-and-white, Republican vs. Democrat you get in popular political culture?

I don't like Bush, I don't like Kerry. I don't like a lot of people.

(I do like John Stewart, though one must realize that his politics are obviously not intended to be in touch with reality.)

downstairs - You do realize that one can think in a more complex fashion than the pure black-and-white, Republican vs. Democrat you get in popular political culture?

What the hell are you talking about?!?! EVERYONE knows that either you're a prudish, civil-liberty-trampling, religious zealot, conservative Republican, OR you're a damn dirty hippie, tree-hugging, bleeding heart liberal Democrat!!!!! There can be no middle ground!!!!!! What are you, some kinda terrorist or sumthin?

Oh man. He ROASTED Jon Stewart! Getting hot in here Jon?

/stretches collar from neck. vents steam. fidgets uncomfortably.

Hahaha... Haterade...

"The marriage of comedy and politics is even more unhealthy than the marriage of church and state."

Riiiiggght. I dropped a couple of IQ points reading that
article; I hope they come back before the end of the day
because I can't spare them.

2004-04-12 03:03:55 PM
wow someone does like jon stewart. Maybe he was up for the host job on the daily show and he's never gotten over not getting it.

2004-04-12 03:04:48 PM
er doesn't like.

You see there's this thing called sarcasm...

Oh wait, I see that Random McEric has things covered.

2004-04-12 04:02:01 PM
while it's pretty clear to even the most casual observer that Stewart dislikes Bush, he skewers Kerry too. I couldn't read the article myself, it's the New Republic, which is about as reputable as the National Enquirer or Weekly World News.

2004-04-12 04:23:25 PM
The dude's on Comedy Central! Time to check your medications, again.... I thought the Clarke interview was pretty funny, and it's not like he doesn't treat serious conservative guests with just as much respect.

I had a problem with the "ra-ra-ruts kick-him-in-the-nuts" too, though.... That was beneath the show's usual level.

2004-04-12 05:19:50 PM
"Franken, Maher, and Miller weigh their comic negativity down with a positive premise. They actually believe in the power of the ballot box to shape the country's future. That's not funny."

Clearly the author is terrified that votes might actually count in this next election.

2004-04-12 06:49:57 PM
I always thought it was Jon Stewart.

But Im a monkey loving assclown, so what do I know.

2004-04-12 06:50:16 PM
The problem is that this guy needs to watch Jon Stewart ON WEED.

2004-04-12 06:51:15 PM
This article made my head asplode.

He doesn't spell his name with an H, right?

The marriage of comedy and politics is even more unhealthy than the marriage of church and state.

Uh, no.

The New Republic is one of the worst magazines on the newsstand. These are the people who got suckered by Stephen Glass (of "Shattered Glass") because they were too busy pulling their peters to do real journalism. They also produced some of the most notorious hacks of all time, including Andrew Sullivan and the late Michael Kelly. Nowadays they write stories about how great outsourcing is. Complete wankery. Oh, and they endorsed Joe Lieberman for president.

2004-04-12 06:53:20 PM

WTF?!

I tried, really tried, to RTFA. But it was so rambling, incoherent, and just plain stupid that I couldn't do it.

Jon Stewart is teh funnay. This pompous asshat "columnist" is not.

2004-04-12 06:56:23 PM
I heard Stalin was a riot back in the day.

2004-04-12 06:56:25 PM
I became a truley devoted fan of Jon Stewart after viewing his post 9-11 show. The guy touched me. I couldn't get in to rtfa, but Lee Seigel, Television Critic of The New Republic means nothing to me.

2004-04-12 06:57:10 PM
I really tried to read the article, but I just couldn't get it to make sense in my head.

2004-04-12 06:57:33 PM
Bill Mahr is a Democrat?

I always thought he was more of a libertarian?

(or, perhaps, he's classified as "D" by the New Republic because they know he's not an "R" and, therefore, he must be a "D" in their binary world?)

2004-04-12 06:57:39 PM
Bah, I stopped watching Stewart during the 2000 election. EVERY SINGLE SHOW was exactly the same. There was no difference between them and it got boring as hell.

2004-04-12 06:57:47 PM
Duh-yuh, uh. Yeah. If I don't get the joke, you must be a bad, uh, joke-telling-guy-thingy.

2004-04-12 06:58:06 PM
Anyone who hates Jon Stewart should be ashamed of themselves.

2004-04-12 06:59:07 PM
Anyone I personaly don't like or agree with is a lot like Stalin. Although they may share some suprising simularities with Hitler.

He's close... but he swerves Dem. on issues like gun rights and responsible resource development.

2004-04-12 07:00:33 PM
It sounds to me like this guy was just pissed Republicans didn't think of the idea for a political satire show geared toward young voters first.

'Course if I was stuck with Rush, Hannity and O'Rielly to be my political voice on TV I'd be pretty upset about it too.

2004-04-12 07:00:35 PM
I don't think the author was making a direct comparison with Stalin and Stewart.

That said, I'm getting tired of both Democrats and Republicans falling all over themselves trying to pin Hitler and Stalin quotes on each other. I wouldn't pee on Bill Clinton if he was on fire, but a Hitler/Stalin he was not. And before somebody says it, neither is George W Bush.

2004-04-12 07:00:47 PM
Almost spit on my monitor.

Were you drinking Haterade? :-P

2004-04-12 07:00:56 PM
it worked for me... though if you couldnt read it, you are missing nothing.. his critique is not of stewarts politics, but of his humor. If he isnt funny, why does he crack me up every time? Oh, and politics and humor are closely linked, and good satire is one of the best signs of a healthy, free democracy.

Lee Siegel's Guide to Making Money the Easy Way:

(1) Find ass; put hat on it.
(2) ???
(3) Profit.

I leave it to Farkers to appropriately fill in step 2 with comic suggestions.

Mine?

Spew forth dumbassed bile about liberals to conservatives too willing to lap it all up.

Go.

2004-04-12 07:01:09 PM
I like Jon Stewart.
