oh my god, a satire story without "The Onion" stamp of approval? I could write funnier stuff if I just kept slamming my penis against the keyboard for 5 minutes! The writers for the Onion totally crap out better ideas every morning after breakfast!

Drevil, I don't know if it would be a better story, but I bet you could tape that and sell it to the right website and make some money. And that is what the internet is about, not satire or entertainment, but making money of off sick fetish porn.

Yeah, after finding out that there's a market for a fat biatch shiatting on herself in a bathtub, I wouldn't be surprised if this idea is gold!

The Onion invented satire. Don't you know that? Nothing had every been satirized before the Onion's existence. Therefore, all satire is a rip-off of the Onion.

Microsoft has been bugging the hell out of me lately. I'm seriously considering dumping windows, and going for linux (I won't even consider switching to mac). Any reccomendations as to which distribution to use, preferably, something that would be good for a total n00b?

Somebody in a different thread said SuSE once for transitioning from Windows to Linux. But IMO they're all the same.

You can try one of those linuxlive cds. You burn it on a cd, and you can boot the entire linux os without installing anything on your system, reboot without the cd and windows loads fine. It's a great way to try linux without making changes, and all it costs is a cdr. Try knoppix at http://www.knoppix.net/ and mandrakemove at www.mandrake-linux.com

I've used Windows for years and Linux (Debian) for years. I bought a Powerbook a year and a half ago. OS X is the best desktop operating system I've ever used. My wife soon switched to an iBook. I strongly urge you to go to an Apple store and just play around with the Macs. Ease of use, easy software install, no virus, no worms.

There is really not a good desktop Linux distro for n00bs. Unless you really want to work hard at it and reinstall several times.

Trying to get everything that you would need for a desktop system to work together seemlessly can be a real pain in the arse with any linux distro. Not that it can't be done, it just takes a lot of reading and manual configuring.

Really, overall one OS is not better than the other. They are just better at specific things and what you want as a user. For a server I would not run anything other than Linux.

For me OS X combined the best of Unix with a great inerface and support for the software I want, without the virus/worm/trojan/spyware.

Oh yea and Hotmail has been a joke since MS bought it.

The headline is funny. This "satire" deserves no more text underneath it. Adding more only kills the joke.

The onion may have forged the path for online Journalistic satire, but come on, it hasn't been funny in a LONG time. It's been on a major downhill slide and shows no signs of letting up.

It had a good run and like most things it has an ending

2004-04-02 04:54:48 PM
You can set it up so you can do both at the same time with a dual boot system. So if you try linux and hate it or can't figure it out then you always have microsoft to fall back on. I did that for a while but I eventually came back to the Darkside. I used Red Hat linux it was easy enough. Don't know much about the newer releases though.

I've tried several distros, and I'm a huge fan of Gentoo Linux. I started off using Red Hat for a couple of years, but when my boyfriend switched to Gentoo in 2002, I was quick to follow.

With Gentoo, you compile everything for your computer's specific setup, so programs are amazingly fast. Gentoo is also based around "Portage," which is a system for downloading and compiling individual programs. So instead of having to use RPM's (as in Red Hat), I just type "emerge gimp" and gimp with all its dependencies is compilled with little to no hassle.

The documentation has gotten a lot better in the past two years, btw. I am the least technical person ever, and even I was able to compile my kernel and get X to work in my latest install.

/thus spoke the Linux chick

Oh, and Hotmail makes my friends hate my computer because you cannot check your hotmail from a linux box running Moz. It can sense the lack of root exploits, I'm sure.

crossbuster:
I'd reccomend Knoppix to begin with, since it boots from the CD and allows you to toy around with it without actually having to install anything. If you're going the whole way, I'd probably suggest an RPM build (Makdrake or Red Hat).
Alternatively, you could just decide by how much hair you have on your ass.
No hair: Red Hat
Some hair: Mandrake
A lot of hair: Debian
Butt 'fro: Slackware.

And MacOSX is extremely nice, even if Apple's machines are horribly overpriced.

2004-04-02 05:42:43 PM
I've been using Gentoo for a couple years, and used Debian since '97.
Best desktop OS ever, at least for me. Don't believe the bullshiat.
There are a lot of good newbie distros out.

Problem with OSX is the fact that then you're bound to proprietary hardware AND software. Screw that.

I have no problem with hotmail. I hardly get spam, I can work with my mail in an email client, and I can get my mail on my phone. No complaints here.

LOL, I agree, typing that made me feel like the gum company guy in "Clerks." But Hotmail actually does meet my needs pretty well.

Microsoft wants you to use and trust their Passport thingy. But their Passport thingy is basically just a Hotmail account. Who the hell trusts Hotmail with their personal details?

I have ran linux since .93 infomagic distro on a 386sx .
I personally like Debian, but the RedHat Distros (mandrake included) are good. Recently did Gentoo but I messed with the STD distro which is not the normal Gentoo and probably not as nice. Linux is good. Linux is fun. I still prefer OSX on the desktop though. I like Linux for running squid and routing and doing intrusion detection and all that BS.

But for normal desktop cruising it's all about OSX for me. People all haggle at me about it while they futz with viruses and spyware. So if you get it you will love it but just don't tell anyone because they all freak out about macs. The plus side is that you can play more games on a mac than a PC running linux...
